A supervisor friend said to me one day that we value what is scarce. At the beginning everyone wants the money because most people live paycheck to paycheck and the money from the mines breaks that. As time goes on and the mortgages are paid and the super tops up, it is time that is scarce, not money anymore. As he got older, he realised that family time is more important and reduced his pay to get a 1/1 roster. He said; "Have a money based goal within 5 years, get your partner to get in on it and after the goal is met or time's up, then have a holiday with them for a few weeks and re-orient your goals"
from what ive found here in canada 3/3 is the sweetspot that works best for me :) maybe 4/2 if you really wanna put your head down and earn a Principle investment for a season. I think anything shorter than 3/3 gets ineffecient vis a vi fly days. even if your fly days are paid, that pay is also capped if you make enough. Currently though im out working 6 weeks voluntarily off of a shift thats meant to be 3. Ive had to jump and fill in positions above me for a week here or there. I dont know if there are genuinely not enough ppl looking to work in the kitchens up here, or if our HR just cant make anything happen. I know they are stretched thin over too many projects (middle of summer!) and its impossible for me to directly contact them. I hope they dont forget me up here! xD I will say nearing the end of Week 5 I am emotionally exhausted and I got the brain fog 🤯
Very true. I've found that as I've moved up in my career and started making more money that I'm less interested in working OT. I'm at a fortunate point where I can prioritize time over money.
Spent 15 years drilling. Started off doing 3 months on, 2 weeks. That moved to 3 months on, 1 month off. Then the 2/2 started to come in, and finally 1/1 before a back injury finished me off. As much as i loved drilling, those 15 years cost me 2 relationships & numerous friends
Never did FIFO work. Worked in a mining town there was no roster for me and few others i worked for 7 days a week 12 hour days only time we got off is if we called in sick or just quit i did 4 years off that and left the sector im glad i got out with my mental health intact.
@teamcoalhapcharcoal days of were listed only time we had off was if work slowed down wich rarely did. You could have holidays but they did threaten you that you would be lucky to even have a job when you came back. I worked in a very toxic work environment. Once worked picked up elsewhere other company's paying better and much better conditions 80% of the workforce left in less then 6-8 months core staff too.
@@4M5555I've seen people on Reddit posts saying they make 150k doing 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. 5 months of work. Looks like I'ma have to try to enter the mining sector.
Did 2/2 weeks for around 5 years as a heavy duty mechanic in mines around British Columbia and Alberta. Made average $175k a year. Also taking a shift off in the summer letting me have 6 consecutive weeks off. It was a good balance
Worked 6 weeks on 1 off, was fkd, didnt even know what month it was, damn Zombie, then done 2&1. Fly back, loose a day, 36hrs no sleep, drive home, should have become a politician. 4x the wage all the perks, sleep during sitting & take super whenever u stop. Lol, back to fifo, great for 10 yrs then got to plan to stop or u get into a habit, then end up divorced like mostof people I know that done fifo, busted their rear end to get nice house, car, whatever the missus wants, etc, to see it all vaporise cos "your never home" but they liked the $$$ as rolled in. If your single, go for it, if not better have an exit plan & stick to it or it will go Boom in your face.
@@user-mj5vx8xj8tThat's pretty bloody fantastic mate, well done. Is it very tough to get into FIFO work as someone with little technical experience? I have an uncle who's high up working for Fortescue metals and sometimes wonder if FIFO would suit me, even if to just massively save $ and set myself up financially. Cheers.
It's definitely not all it's cracked up to be. Have to have a game plan and go in with your eyes open, seen many think it'll last forever and piss it all up against the wall or blow it on toys. Many horror stories of relationship problems when the big paychecks end, knew one trusting old bloke coming off a 3 year fifo construction job only to find out his wife had a gambling problem and the money was all gone, another got told to make sure he got a maxi taxi from the airport to home so all his belongings that his missus had thrown out on the front lawn would fit in it.
Lot more money, more time off, and more time with the kids than I ever had working 9-5. I love my full week at home with the kids much more than I ever did my 10min in the morning and 2h at night.
im only 6 years in the industry leading hand, no wife or kids. And tbh I love it, its made for some not most. I get to job down the track from camp aswell and dunk in the river, or we have a pub on site. I don't mind it my swing is 23 on 5 off
I never did it, so many of my friends did and all got nice houses and cars and boats and also got divorced and kids don’t wanna see them cause they don’t know them.
about to start 7 on 7 off as a driller in qld. I work 52 hrs a week in the meatworks industry, hit up gym everyday after work then get home cook dinner fall asleep. Atleast with mining i'll be getting a week off.
@@KanyeKetchup its alright man, you get sore the first few weeks but it gets better. I do gas drainage in queensland i dunno how different it is in W.A, just always wear gloves, make sure you lift things correctly and keep your hands clear when you put down the rods. I dunno if your on surface it might be different
I spent 7 years in mine work, fifo or dido and thought I was doing the right thing but now after be separated for 3 and a half years and nothing to show for it. I've missed more of my children's birthdays and special occasions than I would care to remember, all i have left is a broken marriage and broken relationships with my children, the money is never worth that.
@@colinl9018 if she took the lot he wasn’t smart with his money, nor smart with his relationship management. I know plenty of men that are no longer married but have money and relationships with their children too. Sounds like he could also be the problem, alcohol, grumpy all the time, out of shape…. The list goes on. I got 300k reasons a year that it is well worth it if you are smart with money 😂😂😂
@@rrocketman yeah he did it wrong for sure 😂😂 He’s got nothing to show cause he did it wrong and has no idea how women work. I’m doing it and I’ll guarantee I work 40% more than he did. I don’t spend money just cause I have it, I have savings that would spin your head and I’ll be retired early with a business running this is not a career, this is a great way to make bull money fast.
Work as driller 2.1, absolutely love it. I d honestly prefer be up there with all facilities, food good mate then be able to go 4wd or holidays over my week off. City jobs will never allow you that lifestyle. Not suited for all.
I've been doing FIFO for some 6 years now, 4/2 , 2/1 etc and yes , you lose one day travel going over , one coming home, so on a 2/1 roster there's not much family time to be had at home , the majority of your life is spent in 50 degree heat doing 12 hr shifts for awesome pay , no matter how many gyms , tennis courts or councillors they throw at the problem, in 10 years time the only people that will remember that you've worked every new years eve , christmas and birthday will be your family ! Great lifestyle for a young unattached person to safe up money quickly, as long as you don't spend it all on toys and get too used to it or stay in too long as all your friends are likely to move on and get married leaving you wealthy but lonely
@@galdfieldren6209 What country are you from ? Do you have a work visa for Australia ? What is your trade ? Chef , underground driller , road train driver , geologist , kitchen hand , ???
@@andy1179 Im from Indonesia sir, right now waiting for my work holiday visa approval, i dont have any experience before in mining but does it have any entry level jobs i can apply? Im majoring in economics they said my degree won't work in there so i"ll just do entry level jobs
So glad to be out of mining. It set me up financially, but it is the worst job. You work with some of the laziest ppl you could find, and its the exact same shit day in day out.
I use to work 28 days on 9 days off back in 2015, i video call my family every day I would do all over again, it really helps if you have a supportive partner and a family goal to work towards.
People get used to the money and spending it with no plan 😂😂😂 I make 300k before tax and am smart with it and have a plan cause it’s not a fucking lifestyle I’ll tell you that 🥴
here in Canada i know guys that work 3 weeks on 3 weeks off at the Baffinland mine in nunavut. Insanely remote place. Can't imagine what that's like, 12 hour shifts in -50C in the winter for 3 weeks would be unlivable for me. Food is bomb af tho
I work in the north 3/3 but not there. Ive heard its a gulag in Baffinland. but recently on the news they laid off like what a hundred guys and are down to a skeleton crew ☠ Foods the best part of the job lmao also bein up this far is alright if you gotta cushy camp job, but hats off to all the guys on the road out there and doin what needs doing outside during winter operations Also its god damn beautiful in Nunavut right now, 20-30c and 23 hour sun lol just watch out for grizzlies lolol
I did oil and gas 10 years. Used to get on a lot of flights in a month. Now hardly leave the town i live in or home. Cant stand be on a plane for more than 2 hours like once a year
How much money were they being paid? It's a choice. You choose fifo, big money. You choose not fifo, some other career, not as much money. It's pretty simple really. Not much point complaining about the choices that you make. You made 'em.
I’ve been DIDO(drive) for almost 25 years in underground Qld coal mine’s choosing to live near the coast it’s not for sooks if you can’t hack it don’t do it. Simple. I’ve been lucky enough to only ever be 2-2.5hrs drive from home at each pit. The time apart every second week is what’s kept us close over the years.
The sad music makes this even more dumb…looks like he just hasn’t taken care of himself period…people value what they value, but to me it seems like mental and physical health is what’s scarce…
Lots of good people fought the good fight to create conditions to avoid these problems, but you lot pissed them all up against the wall for the mighty dollar. Reap what you sew.
Years spent doing dido foundation industry drilling piles to ventilation shafts for underground mines roster was 6 weeks on 3 days off if you were lucky, however if the job only had a few more weeks you would stay until finished. Best advice make good money and keep it and don't piss it up against a wall "keep more of what you make and make more of what you keep " as with every year it gets harder
Money is your time. Money takes away some of your stresses but equally creates the same amount, if not more stresses. Your time/care/energy are your true values and gifts whilst in this physical consciousness experience we are having. Both money and time run out very quickly if squandered. FIFO's may get paid well but it comes at a huge cost of personal connected consciousness experiences that they lose when away from what/who matters to them the most.
working in cell towers ive been out of town for a week or 2 and been gone for over 90 days across the country.. but im single with no kids so i love it
that's the problem, people are willing to do it for the money. don't do it. simple. I earn $45 per hour 40hr week at home. My brother bragged he was earning over $100 p/h. Lost his family (estranged) and permanently disabled from a stroke. he loved the fucking money at the time, let me tell you.
I've seen a lot of yacht crew have similar problems... many that I've known over the years have ended up homeless on the street, picking up ciggy butts off the pavement to smoke or becoming fentanyl addicts...
I did fifo ive seen men say they get to see more of the family that way,i said give it 5-10 yrs when your worn out, kids left home, ask yaself what ya missed out on by chasing the $$$$
Unfortunately with the cost of living people have no choice but to work fifo next week Monday i start my first day as a Electrical trade assist i fear this will be my future 😢
Look i will be honest, i have done it for 5 years now. I enjoy the 2:2 roster. But this lifestyle isnt for everyone. You do sacrifice to get paid well and support your family. But thats what you have to do
No. Of course much FIFO work in the resources sector is very well paid, but since the pandemic, rosters have gotten worse in terms of down time with family or to recover
It's a "If you are in this situation you would understand" it's not easy finding a job that can pay as good as fifo does which is why people get stuck in this.
@@CocoTVx I know I work fifo. But if your going to cry to your union that your getting home sick or that your roster is too long then switch mine sites or company’s or just move back to the city.
They make out like you get paid so much. I call bullshit. You get paid crap but youre doing 12 hours a day with nowhere to spend it. That's where the money is. When you add up what you give for what you get, its a pittance
It’s a good thing you don’t get to spend it while you’re on swing. Save and invest or buy you a couple toys. Trust you aren’t gonna get a 100k plus job in the city with no skills
It's not for everyone but I love it. My family is well taken care of. Over my 17 years I've seen 6 and 1, 4 and 1. Currently doing 2 and 1 at snowy hydro.
@@aaronodriscoll8958 I just got a new job yesterday at a hotel. The roster 2:1 is a bit hardcore. I’d like that $$ and I’m single so I wouldn’t mind. Might put my name down.
IS this still going on today in 2022 ? The eastern states do 7/7 on/off ...... at worst 2/1 on /of. Ive done various rosters over 19 years ....7/7 WAS THE BEST FIFO & DIDO
4/1 is common in construction. 2/1 or 8/6 is typical for operation. There's some onsite office stuff at 4/3. And a few sites do 2/2. Or go shutdowns and work every single day of the year. It honestly depends what you want. If you don't want to work 4 weeks on then don't take that job. Go get an Operations job at 8/6.
Workers: We need a better schedule that allows us to have time with our loved ones Boss: How about a phone number you can call so you can get some breathing techniques?
Did a year in the Pilbara/Kimberly on road construction. Two weeks on, one off. The heat, which got to 40 +, 70 on the road. The conditions alone were enough to cause a meltdown, not to mention the cowboys on site. After witnessing my crew leader get hit and killed by an lv on site, I quit. No amount of money is worth your life.
Hell yeah...I remember those days, early 80s, 21 days straight (7am-7pm), 3 days break then back into it (NZ), then in Oz, 28 days (7am-7pm), 3 days off...burnt me out BIG time but it sure was fun pissing all that dosh up against the wall !!! Party, party...drugs, sex, and booze. Hell of an experience for a 19yr old.
