Without doubt one of my absolute most productive trout & grayling patterns. Tied on a # 12,14 or 16 hook, as here, it makes a fantastic caddis pupa but on smaller sizes, even down to a # 22, it's my first choice every time for hatching midge.

Mr. Clarke, after trying this one several times I've found that a lice comb (no, I don't have a lice problem) is genius for running the deer hair parallel. For larger flies of this sort I use a moustache comb.

Mr. Ord, I took your advice and tied up just a shade darker variation of this exact fly and we had a very nice couple of days so I went to a spot I know with lots of nice pan frying sized Brookies and I tried a lot of my winter time old stand by flys that most times work fantastic but I'm not sure yet why, they didn't! I couldnt even get a follow from a Trout. Well I decided what the heck I would tie my slightly darker version on this exact fly and on the first cast I hooked up and in a matter of 20 minutes (not kidding a bit either I actually looked at my watch) I had a daily limit of 6 fish ! These were all in the 2lb ea range and a very nice meal for my family. This fly has already shown me its merits. Thanks Again.

Thanks for this pattern! Caught a beautiful trout with this fly last week. Question: Do you normally use floatant on this one?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Jonas, thanks. No floatant, you want this pattern to dive and swim up and down as you retrieve.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Sorry Jonas, that was the wrong answer. YES correct you use floatant on this pattern, although it floats well on its own the floatant helps it sit high and dry.

Fantastic emerger, Barry, as usual. Even if it's off topic, I see many of the patterns in your book, and from the MPJ book, both books have your spectacular photographs. I would like to ask you, if it is not top secret, and of course, broadly, how you photograph flies. Do you use softbox? ... Macro lens? ... Recommended focal length? ... If you use macro lens, do you use ring flash? or on the contrary you only use the lighting typical of the softbox. Thank you and sorry for this query taking advantage of one of your flies, but I did not know what other media to use to make this query. I really appreciate your photography. An affectionate greeting and thanks again.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 года назад
Hi Jorge, thanks. No soft box used in the photography but I do use a full studio set-up with 3 studio flash lights, A Canon Eos 1 Mk lll with a 100 mm Macro lens at f32. A Grey background that I light with gels on the flash.
@jorgemerino4709
@jorgemerino4709 4 года назад
@@Thefeatherbender Thanks Barry, I recently bought a Nikon camera, DX sensor (D7200) and a Laowa 60mm f / 2.8 2X Ultra-Macro macro lens and have started taking my first shots on fly ties. Initially I use a mini-studio (softbox) in which I combine softbox lighting with external flashes (On camera flash with extension cable or Ring flash) with gels. I'm still in the testing phase and I have a long way to go. In other words, any expert advice will always be welcome. Thanks Barry.

Would you ever put anything on the deer hair on the back to give it more durability?
@Thefeatherbender

Hi, the easy answer is a big NO. You will find that deer hair is quite fatty and its very difficult to get anything to adhere to it.

Is roe deer hair simply deer hair. Roe seems to be a European connotation. Do you fish this like a dry? You make it look easy but working with deer hair in a size 16 is tough. I tried it.
