The Mini - Death Grip is a bite sized articulated streamer perfect for matching immature or smaller forage such as fat heads, chubs, and sculpins. The small size of the fly is ideal for smaller watersheds, creeks, and low and clear conditions and is able to be thrown effectively on a 5 wt rod. The fly is designed to be nearly weightless, and is intended for sink tip and full sinking lines, however you can simply swap the Large Bead Chain eyes for Small Lead eyes to modify for Floating lines.

Great video!!!! I never get tired of watching you tie, brother. I really appreciate the amount of detail that you put into explaining not only the process but, the reason behind the process. Thanks for another great fly.

Gunnar, Thanks for sharing this pattern. I tied some for a Bull Trout trip. The trout enthusiastically approved. I made some changes but tied them essentially as you instructed. It is by far one of the fishiest flies I have ever seen in the water.

Also, thanks for the tip on replacing deer hair with the strung fuzzy fiber. Brilliant!! Never cared much for working with deer hair. This is an awesome and in my opinion superior approach.

Thanks for a wonderful video and the chat at the end of the video. I used to fish 100 days a year for many years in a row. I just recently decided to get back into again. Obviously, bugs and meat patterns have progressed over that timespan. Your a great teacher. And I love the way you teach and how much understanding goes into the rhetoric.

Just recently found your channel and am loving it. I first started tying flies in 1977 without the aid of a vise and didn't own a vise until 1980. I later learned how to spin & stack deer hair for my Smallmouth bugs through trial and error. Your channel is very informative and I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting theory on the on the hook momentum. So basically you want an action akin to a glide bait.

Love those eyes. I think I will try putting my wood lathe to work making some dubbing brushes. Do you have a suggestion for full sinking line I have a 10 wt. and tied many of your flies and started weighting them to compensate for the floating line. What do you suggest for pike and big browns in while be able to fish flats and deep edge. Your work is awesome and supper inspiring. Keeper coming.

Hey Gunnar, Thanks for the video. I was looking for a tutorial on using strung fuzzy fiber and this is great. Do you try to trim the heads in a similar way to what Galloup does with deer hair: Flat bottom, fins on the sides? I couldn't really tell from watching. Thanks.

Gunnar, have you ever tried doing the head as a brush as well? Would that save time, or does the wire of the brush end up being too bulky?

I'm convinced that the full sized death grip doesn't actually exist. Cannot find even a picture of it (and no, I don't believe the video tutorial by the guy with the soul patch is the actual death grip, I think he just tied the mini on bigger hooks).

I don’t have fuzzy fibers. I do have EP fibers which are kind of wavy. Could I use EP fibers instead, or do you think EP fibers are still too flimsy compared to fuzzy fibers?

Looks great. Mini articulated streamers are more suitable for our smaller UK rivers. One question, on these smaller patterns, do you think the rear hook point is needed or could you clip it off and just rely on the front hook?
@markworthington1895
@markworthington1895 6 лет назад
Peter Finnis Good question, my thoughts exactly on cutting rear hook. I live in B.C. CA Where 2 hooks are banned.
@Gunnar_Brammer
@Gunnar_Brammer 6 лет назад
The rear hook is certainly not necessary from the standpoint of missing fish, but the mass form the hook helps aid in the this particular flies action. You could easily swap the rear hook for a shank, but it may be worth bending your own shanks form thicker wire, adding sparse weight to the rear shank - say 5 turns of .025 on a thinner wire shank, or you may find it fishes well regardless.
@PeterFinnis
@PeterFinnis 6 лет назад
Thanks Gunnar. Yes, adding a few turns of lead wire to compensate makes sense
@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists
In our research that you can recreate, you will learn that the back hook will be the engaged hook when the water is cold. I've personally seen 90 percent of takes on the back hook in cold Spring waters. Not everyone believes in trailing hooks, but I do wonder if they are aware of how many fish they miss.

@jimfreeman3636
@jimfreeman3636 5 лет назад
Gunnar, I stumbled onto your site after seeing a photo of the Mini Death Grip. I was watching you tie when I spied a tool I just have to ask about. I’ve been tying with an HMH vice for some 40+ years, and in fact talked with Bill Hunter many years ago (HMH = Hunter’s Mad House) at a Denver show. I was drifting along with you when you used a black clip around the barrel of the vise to secure the articulating hook. It looked like a perfect fit. What is that clip you used?
@Gunnar_Brammer
@Gunnar_Brammer 5 лет назад
Hey Jim, it's just a small sized hair clip that you can find at wallgreens or wallmart, ect..... Usually by the hair products like shampoos, ect...

They offer Steve Farrar’s SF blend in more color options than strung fuzzy fiber. Have you ever considered that material or do you think it is too stiff for this application?
@ArroyoGuitars
@ArroyoGuitars 5 лет назад
I have spun the SF, I think the fuzzy stuff is not as stiff, and the fuzzy stuff seems more easily workable into a head
@Belbivdevoe

Gunner why would you not put the strung fuzzy fiber in a brush?

Can you get the same action of head movement coming down river?
@phoult37
@phoult37 6 лет назад
Thoughts on cutting the back hook? Doing so would eliminate the keel and allow the back hook to swim more freely, but it might also disrupt the rearward momentum that you're going for. Thoughts?
