What hook is that? What's the difference between a 1XL and 1XH? Do you really need all these different hooks??
This is the second instructional video in the "Fly Tying Materials for Beginners" series where we explore all the basics on what's what when it comes to hooks for fly tying.
The hook comparison charts are available for download in a Google Drive folder at:
drive.google.com/drive/folder...
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least two new videos a week (usually Tuesdays and Fridays).
Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks matt these charts are what every tier needs when I started it was mostly mustard and of course it was to get hooks made prior to W W 2 for the good steel and if you found them you bought as many as you could afford thus still have quite a few but must tiers use anything but mustard

Thank you, Matt this is a nice visual chart. Hook size and fly types can be confusing. Mostly, I stick with all of my old Mustad hooks. I understand how to tie on Mustads some are now becoming very vintage LOL. I have some size 9''s 11's 13's and 15's and 19's that's really crazy for the normal USA gauged hooks.

28 - 32 hooks. Better get out an electron microscope. I did know a guy who tied 32s. It was a specialty. Dunno why. His glasses made coke bottle bottoms look like flat lenses on a pair of glasses. If you could see his flies, I’ll bet they were beautiful. But then, I never could quite see them. Thank you for the hook chart links. Will definitely download them.

Hi Matt!Been wondering about different styles of hooks.I know some patterns need a different style to look right in the water but would like to know the difference.Such as curved as to hopper as to scud as to nymph.

Hi matt in my years of tying and teaching flybtying. My hook range was frow 0/2 to size 32 I would Tie a 32. Royal coachman to. Show it’s all in proportion
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Holy cow Daniel, I can't even imagine being able to see a #32. My range so far is from a 1/0 (the big saltwater fly I did earlier this week) to a #22 Elk Hair Caddis. I could probably manage a zebra midge type fly smaller than that but I can't imagine tying a dry fly smaller than a 22. Maybe someday. :-)
@thomaswalls123
@thomaswalls123 3 года назад
I've been looking allot at hooks lately. I think some of the barbless dry fly and wet fly hooks look really nice. But I see the gap is much bigger. Is there really a difference?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Thomas- good question. I'm finding it hard to find barbless hooks in all the sizes I want to use. Firehole has some, but I'm having to use a lot of Saber hooks. Some folks think they're not real high quality but they're pretty economical and I've never had one break on me-- except maybe when I'm hung up on a rock. They're a lot cheaper than Tiemco or Mustad and I do okay with them. Speaking of the gap, some of the Firehole competition hooks seem to have a wider gap, which is confusing since a wider gap should make it a bigger hook size. But for the Saber brand, a size 12 with a barb and without a barb in the same style look exactly the same (except for the barb of course). I'd recommend taking a look at them and see if they'll work for you. (You can get them at the Fly Shack.)

Can you tie flies using the octopus hooks with turned out point? How would it affect the action of the flies. I have lots of 1/0 hooks. I mostly tie streamers for bass on spinning gear. Love the channel by the way. To the point without all the work up.

Why is my 210 d breaking so easily. Bad bobbin?
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Год назад
Yes, possibly a nick in your bobbin. Is it a ceramic tip? Have you tried the same bobbin holder with different thread? I'd try it with a different 210 and if that thread is also breaking, it's likely the bobbin.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies Год назад
Well thank you Calvin! I don't tie much saltwater and have never used the Gamakatsu Octopus hooks but I have tied a few bass flies on regular circle hooks which I would think are about the same.

I imagine there are lots of how-to videos on what to put in a bug-out kit, but not really what to put in a kit if you had to hole up in the mountains with rivers as a potential food source.
