Watch Joe Messinger tie, as I had a chance to feature him on my channel after this video was filmed:
Part 1: • The "Irresistible" fea...
Part 2: • Joe Messinger Q & A: F...
Tying a size 10 dry fly can always be challenging, yet here's a fun (and effective!) one to try. I chose Joe Messinger Sr.'s Irresistible dry fly for this tutorial, which can be normally tied with characteristics similar to an Adams, though I chose a larger pattern which can represent many insects on the water. The tying of this dry fly includes a few intermediate techniques, but none that can't be mastered with a little practice.

I always enjoy tying deer or elk hair clumped together, these types of flies create a unique body dynamic. TY!

Absolutely, John, and thanks for taking a moment to comment. On a future video, I featured Joe Messinger, and it was his dad who created the Irresistible. I strongly encourage you to check it out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JjsOGVyhMBM.html

Thank you Tim. Keep up putting out these videos. You provide us with a lot of instruction. I also love the back stories of the flies your demonstrating! Keep up the good work!

Hey Tim, great video, great fly. When you mentioned the color scheme on the squirrel, it reminded me to share a bit of useful information to whoever might be interested in some fly tying material. I was at our local outdoor expo and boat show a few weeks ago and came across a fur vender who had many miscellaneous scraps of fur (at $1.00) and masks (at $3.00)!!! I bought two masks, one black beaver, and one badger in natural with a unique black and white mixed/mottled coloration. Our local Cabelas sells hares masks at that price! and when I said "wow, this is cheaper than the fly shop"! He looked at me like a deer in the head lights! But to you or any who are into fly tying, that bin of scraps at the fur vendors booth just may be a treasure trove to you. I personally tie what I call my predator nymphs made of bobcat and coyote (that is all I had when I started tying) and I have caught most of my trout on them.

Thanks for the kind words regarding my video, J0Gu7 , and great tip for everyone trying to buy pieces of fur. You're going to have to share this predator nymph with us! Tim

Great job I really like the squirrels tail wing. You make it look so easy. I know w you like what you do. Thanks for sharing your info. Stay healthy.

Thanks for taking a moment to comment, Stan, and yes, I do love tying flies. It may look easy, but I've also been tying for 30 years, so that helps a little. I really appreciate the support of you viewing and being a subscriber, and would love to send you some "Trout and Feather" stickers and a fly. Shoot me an email with your address and I'll get it headed your way. Thanks again, and I hope you're safe and healthy. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Great idea, George; thanks! I don't coat flies with Scotch Guard as much as I used to, though this nice reminder may get me back in the habit this summer. Thanks again!

I love this pattern, i tie it in Size #8 to 12. Try caribou body hair, it spins easier for this type of fly. I carry some panatone marking pens in several colors and been known to make some modifications on the stream. I fish it on shorter leaders, in the 10 foot give or take on the outside. 3x tippet. Riffles and pocket water. I found that the shorter stiffer leader solves some of the leader twisting problems and it turns over better and that improves accuracy. One of my winter tying favorites!

@TimCammisa 11 лет назад
Thanks for the comments, George, plus I'll have to try some caribou body hair in the future. I wonder if it offers the pattern any additional flotation capabilities; either way, I look forward to trying that. Your suggestions are right on, as always; hope all is well!

Riley, thanks for the question. The answer depends on the season and type of water you're fishing. Regardless of either, I would absolutely have a few streamer patterns (Woolly Bugger, Black Ghost, small Clouser Minnows) and appropriate nymphs to match the naturals of that season. Make sense? TC
@PieterSnyders
@PieterSnyders 11 лет назад
Have a look at the other patterns on Tom's site, for example Papa Roach, very good Dragon flt pattern. And the RAB and Para Rab are great dry fly
@GeorgeSemel
@GeorgeSemel 11 лет назад
Yes even better than deer body hair, but there is another trick you can do, Tie a bunch of them, and tread them all on some mono, and string it up in the garage or some other dry well ventilated place and spray them down with Scotch Guard. Let cure for a day or two. Float high and dry. Also, use zap a gap when constructing the body and wings- makes for a more durable fly or one of the other super glues.

Hey Tim, nice tie! I thought you might find this link interesting. It is a fly called a DDD that was probably inspired by the irresistible
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 11 лет назад
Absolutely, Pieter; thanks for the comment. Do you prefer the DDD on rivers or lakes?

In Smaller sizes it fairs well in Streams and bigger for still waters

Um, thanks? Ha ha...I appreciate the comment, for sure, but do prefer to give a history of the pattern and details as to the tying techniques. If I'm repeating information, I apologize, and will try my best to stay on-point in the future! Thanks again. TC

I agree with you regarding the wings; I mainly put them on this fly due to it being a formal pattern for RU-vid. I really love Krazy Glue, though tend to use it more on bass patterns versus trout. Are there any specific patterns you use it on?
@GeorgeSemel
@GeorgeSemel 11 лет назад
I first started using super glue- Krazy Glue back around 1979 -80. Anything to make the fly more durable. As you know, some days you can't buy a fish and then there are others were you have hook ups on just about every drift. My daily average really when up back then. from a lucky 3 to 4 fish days to 15 to 20 in an afternoon. Once I learned to look before casting. I don't think that you even have to put wings on it to fish well- Heavy hackled collar works and is quicker to tie.

Thanks, Darryl; I really appreciate it. I have yet to make it to the Sowbug, and am not planning on it this year. I would love to visit Tony Spezio and some other guys, but it's a pretty involved trip for just a couple days. Will you be in attendance? Thanks again, Tim

I don't know if you know any thing about this but if you were to go cutthroat trout fishing what flies would you recommend.
@alc609

Why do you not pack the hair any? Does it change the fly if packed? Just curious
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment, Al, and I tend to simply spin the hair when using flies with such stiff tail fibers and longer hackle. Those two will help to keep this fly above water, and the hair isn't as critical for floating. You absolutely can pack it tighter if you'd like. Here's a video of the original Irresistible tied by Joe Messinger, and he commented that packing is optional (around the 16:00 mark of the video). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JjsOGVyhMBM.html For me, packing it will slightly change the pattern....it will float a tad longer before requiring false casts to dry, plus be a little prettier. ;-) Thanks again for checking. which fly's would you recommend for trout fishing still water that are easy to tie for beginners?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 10 лет назад
Steve, I would start with some streamer patterns, such as the Woolly Bugger and Clouser Minnow. Tie them in colors to mimic the natural bait fish, and try to tie the patterns to represent the approximate size of any naturals. Good luck! TC

Nice fly Tim!! Can this be used in stillwater? I mostly fish lakes. Thanks for your video! :)
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 7 лет назад
That's a good question, as I tend to fish it in moving waters. This is a buoyant fly that will work if you need one floating well, though maybe you could use it on a dry-dropper setup? Thanks again for the comment. Tim
