Fly tying parachute Adams is pretty easy and straightforward. If you've been struggling to get your Parachute Adams to look perfect there are a few tricks that will change your fly tying life.
1-Use Vevus tying thread. 8/0 is super strong and will make it easy to keep the bulk down.
2-The tail should be about the length of the hook shank.
3-After tying in the tail tie in the post. The base of the post should be about 1/3 shank length back from the eye. Use a poly post. Poly is durable and very easy to use. Put a bump of thread in front of the post to stand it up.
4-Use a good dry fly dug. Adam's Gray for a PA... or any color you want. Dub the abdomen from the tail towards the post. Stop dubbing right behind the post.
5-Tie in your two hackles at the base of the post. Tie them at a 45-degree angle to the post and the hook shank. Concave side down and away.
6-Advance the tying thread to the eye of the hook. Dub the thorax from the eye of the hook to the base of the posts.
7-Build the bast of the post. Wrap upwards and then back down to create a solid base for the hackle.
8- VERY IMPORTANT... Hang the tying thread off the far side of the hook.
9-Wrap the hackles so the concave portion is facing down. The best you can spiral the hackles down the post.
10-Secure the hackles to the post with a wrap or two then Whip finish the hackles to the post. Correct... Whip finish the hackles to the post. This takes some practice but you'll figure it out. This makes the flies more durable and way better looking.
11-Trim your thread and post.
