Fly Tying: Pheasant Rump Crawdad

This is a Freestyled Crawdad imitation. This past fall (November 2019) I was fortunate enough to attend the International Fly Tiers Symposium in NJ and had the pleasure of tying along side Jason Taylor (Instagram - "flyonby"). Besides the fact that his flies are RIDICULOUS, he showed me a pattern called the Pheasant Rump Deceiver and it has haunted me ever since.
The fly uses a host of Pheasant feathers from around the cape to compose a proper Crawfish Silhouette intended for chasing Smallmouth Bass, and other species whom love smaller freshly molted crawfish.
To purchase these materials you can go to my website: streamersbygunnar.com/pheasan...
Materials:
Thread: Mono .006" Danville
Hook: Ahrex sz. 4 Shrimp SA250
Pheasant Cape
Accent Flash
Bucktail

Awesome pattern Gunnar. I love the overall pattern, but even better is how you demonstrated using materials from the pheasant and bucktail that often get overlooked and tossed in the bin. Will be picking through my pheasant skin and doing up a dozen of these for river smallies. Excelento tutorial! Thanks.

Your pheasant feather series is fantastic and this crayfish pattern has serious potential for saltwater fishing. We’re planning a trip to Belize for next year and I’m researching lots of permit flies. This fly tied with mono crab eyes, a weed guard and weighted with a dumbbell at the hook eye will definitely be in my box. Can’t wait to give it a go.

Hey Gunner. I like that you show how to process the materials on camera. At least half of tying is knowing how to manage the materials. Also the last shot with the fly on a line in the tank to see how it acts in water. Keep up the good work.

Great fly, Gunnar. I tied a few, not hard at all. I swapped out brown Solarez for the super glue for head cement. Also, I save all the aftershaft feathers for Sparrows and other nymphs. A pheasant skin is a gift that just keeps on giving.

another good one Gunnar. One can never have too many crayfish patterns aka Smallie Snacks in their box. Seems like a pattern anyone can pick up quickly and most fly tyers would already have the ingredients. I need those Ahrex shrimp/crayfish style hooks though.

Hi Gunnar, great video. I can't find Jason's pheasant rump deceiver anywhere. Would you please do a video demonstrating that pattern?

Being a pheasant hunter helps with fly tying supplies, and deer hunter ,duck ,goose ,and friends with chickens ,so flash ,hooks and thread ,and channeil are my only expense

Another really good fly buddy, and the materials are cheap too. I may try this with some chicken skins I got from a friend of mine, they were really cheap. Keep the good stuff coming.

Great fly! I will be tying it. Just one question- is there an advantage using mono?? Thx!

Actually I just tied your style crawdad fly on a G Lock worm hook using bucktail (bulkhead) and hackle for claws. Btw I also tied a 4" Chosen One Jr on a Ahrex NS172 reaverse quimish tail, bucktail bulkhead and fuzzy fiber head. 2020 spring bass here I come!

Love it. Where can you find a good pheasant cape? How you did the dropper weight makes me want to apply the technique to a weightless Chosen One so I can get it to ride hook point up

I found this: www.featheremporium.com/Exotic-Feathers/pheasants/ringneck.html I’m not a fly tier I do tie some jigs. Looks to me like I would want to get the rooster not the hen?
