This is a nice nymph. I made them like pheasant tails and hares ear nymphs in different colors. Only difference was I made the hares hear using Jim Masura ‘s wiggle nymph pattern which uses deer hair for the tail. I also made a pheasant tail wiggle nymph using the plastic cord on the tail section using coq de Leon with more than normal feathers. I did that to improve durability. I’ve had problems with pheasant tail fibers breaking down after a couple fish. On the regular nymph I didn’t have that problem. I love your iso pattern Scott. I’m thinking of making a pink Cadillac wiggle nymph for early season rainbow stiockers. I think the wiggle nymphs just raised the bar on stonefly nymphs. Good job!

@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
Hi Ed! Thank you very much for your kind words. Yes, I guess when you get the mechanics down as far as how to make the wiggle nymph, you can pretty much adapt it to almost any standard nymph pattern. Neat to see you coming up with your own variations. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Great pattern and video Scott, thanks so much for sharing! Out of curiosity, was that giant rainbow on Penns a week or so back (w/Dave R.) on an ISO wiggle, or regular (non-wiggle) ISO nymph? @pawoodsnwater7551 2 года назад
Hello Alfons! Oh yes, all patterns can be modified to your liking. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. Honestly, to this point, I haven’t yet come across a failure with the 4x tippet connection. With that said, half of the time I use this pattern, I do break off the back hook, the other times I do keep the back hook on without any issues. The reason I’ll break off that back hook is because sometimes the abdomen section will get repeatedly tangled with the front section, either because of too long of a connection or the angle of the eye on the back hook. But, like I said, both ways of fishing it, work equally well. Good luck with your pattern innovations, so cool to put your personal touch on our flies. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Nice Jim! 👍🏻 Fish them with confidence. The weight I use is all dependent on water depth and flow, just like all nymphing. If it’s a wiggle nymph, it’ll be my last or lowest fly on my tandem rig, to give it room to wiggle more freely, if it’s just the regular big brown or Ginger nymph, I’ll position it at the top or middle spot on my tandem rig. I am going to do some inventory and order any needed material to give it a try. One question, can you fish this with a dropper off the bend? You drop from the eye right? Hi Scott Chuck here; I finished watching your video from today's posting 4/1/22 and have a few questions; [I'm posting this on this video because I just finished watching this again] You were using your wiggle nymph and you hooked that one monster "thru the gill" Wow that was unusual and glad it turned out ok for the big guy. I noticed you had two hooks on the fly [as you show in this tying video] My question is; do you ever double hook a fish on this fly? Are the hooks barbless or de-barbed? And do you find the fish hooked on the front or rear mostly? Thanks Chuck S.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 2 года назад
Hi Chuck! Yes, that fish was very lucky. The reason I thought it was foul hooked was because it was actually hooked outside past the gill plate on the pectoral fin, which was life saving for the fish, sooo lucky! This fly did have barbs but you can and I do use barbless at times. I really don’t see a connection as to which hook the fish gets more or less hooked on, but I can say with confidence that I really don’t see a negative about breaking the back hook off. The only reason I’ll do it is when the abdomen may get tangled too frequently with the thorax for whatever reason, sometimes I thinks it’s because I may make the 4x connector piece a smidge too long which gives the abdomen more wiggle room, it also depends on what hook you use on the abdomen, the 200r hook is a straight eye so it has more clearance to wiggle. The more you tye it by trial error you’ll find a happy medium of how much clearance to give it. Hope this helps.

No no Alex! If you want, if it gets tangled too much while fish, break off the BACK hook, not the front. Just get your forceps and bend it back and forth a couple times and it’ll just break off very easy, but I usually don’t do that unless it gets tangled a lot. Sometimes, for whatever reason, some get tangled and some don’t. Believe me, having only the front hook is just as effective as the back hook. Thanks for watching and your question.

The Tiemco 200r hook in size 12 is the actual hook I use on my regular non-wiggle tye. If you can find another hook in a size 16-3xl in a straight shank, I’m sure you can substitute it. At least half the time as I say in the video, I wind up breaking the abdomen hook off just cause it tangled sometimes if you don’t get the attaching 4x lined up correctly, but it still is just as effective with one or two hooks. Thanks for your question, appreciate you watching!

I need to tie a few of these. Your original iso was the first fly I tied that I caught a fish on. I’ve loved that pattern. This one looks great. What motivated you to try the two hook “wiggle”? I feel like the ostrich herl is such a great material. Thanks Scott! Great job!

Scott!! What up?! Thank you buddy. Like I said in my video, I saw Holsingers wiggle pattern he tied looking something like a Zugbug, thought it looked neat, so I just substituted my recipe for my Isonychia pattern and just fished it just for fun to see if I’d catch anything on it. Boy, was I surprised! Wiggle patterns have been around for a long time but I never tried them, normally I wouldn’t tye a nymph that took a half hour to make, guess I was bored one day and had the time at the vise to fool around. Glad I did! Hope you success with it too. Tight Lines! Thanks for watching and commenting.

I am sorry I missed that explanation. Must’ve been too late in the day for my brain! I will try to get the hooks to tie some this weekend. Thanks Scott!!

Do you have a dog? I can hear his tongue lapping up water in the background. Kind of funny.

Hi Pat! You know, I’ve never measured it, it’s just a little longer than my than my regular Isonychia, look at the thumbnail picture of the video, the nymph on top is the regular, actually all three other flies are tyed on the same TMC200R size 12 hook, the one on the bottom right is the wiggle nymph, just a little bit longer. I tried tying them bigger but I have the best success with it on these sizes. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hey Scott, in your recipe you list the 200r. isn’t the TMC 200r hook a 3x long curved nymph hook? Did you use two TMC 100’s in 16 because of the gap? They both looked like they had straight shanks on them. But anyways, ever since your one video a year or so ago when you mentioned a wiggle iso I have been trying to tie something similar. Really appreciate you showing us how!!

Hi Jonathan! Ha ha! You’re very observant and accurate. That hook was actually my last hook I had in a batch of hooks I’ve had for a looong time, but I don’t remember who made them. The only hook that matched up to it was the TMC200R hook but yes that hook does have a slow gradual slope to it and it is the same length, the gap is a little bit smaller but doesn’t matter on the back hook. I looked at all the TMC hooks but the only straight bend hook that would be close is a TMC2312, it has a straight eye, actually went to TCO to get them but they didn’t carry that hook, so the 200R will do fine. Hope the video helps you with the wiggle tye. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 so would you use the 200r or use the 100 dry fly hook twice? And what part would you use the curved hook on? Abdomen or thorax? Just curious of your take.
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
@@jonathonkersting9043 Oh, for the 200R, the abdomen definitely, the abdomen is a longer body part and the gap is too small for the thicker thorax.

How long total is the nymph your using on penns creek?
@pawoodsnwater7551
@pawoodsnwater7551 3 года назад
Never really measured it, the regular nymph is a size 12-3xl hook, the wiggle nymph is a size 16 standard dry fly hook for the thorax and a size 16-3xl for the abdomen with about a 2mm space in between for the connecting mono, plus the tail length, total length somewhere around 1.25 inches. Hope that helps ya.

Have to tie 12 flies to get 6. Pain in the butt to tie but I tied up 12. If a good fish catcher worth the effort.

@@pawoodsnwater7551 Oh no no no, no arm twisting. With a name like "Scott's Isonychia/Big Brown Wiggle Nymph" one has to tie up a dozen or so of these. lol They are a good looking nymph and a good fish catcher.
