Detailed tying instructions for a simple sculpin streamer. While this is smaller than some of the newer articulated streamers, it's still worth a place in your box especially in rivers with a lot of bullhead, sculpins or miller's thumb minnows.

Just re-taken up fly tying and have added several of your videos to a play list. Great content, very well explained and I really like that you don't speed up your videos like other RU-vid fly tiers as it allows you to tie along with you.

Just got back from my local shop with materials to tie a few of these up! I may try something different on the underbody, I'm not sure if the dubbing I have is lengthy enough, well see.

+Charlie Wilson What dubbing did you get? I hope the flies work out for you. All the best Martyn

+Martyn White (flickingfeathers) Well they only had what I already had. I have some SLF Prism dubbing. It might work, I'll try it in a bit! It just seems like it's fairly short stranded. The couple I tied, I just used a kinda tannish crystal sparkley chenile. They look great though, I'm sure if I can put them in front of some fish they'll hammer them!

+Charlie Wilson That dubbing should be fine. All the best Martyn

Nice little sculpin. I do put the thread in the front. Not so much to keep the helmet on but to give it a finished look. All the best to you Martyn. Sean

+Sean Mooney Hi Sean, actually I don't like it in front of the head or cone, I think it's a North American thing as British tiers always butt up behind the head for a snug hidden finish. All the best Martyn

Excellent sculpin streamer nicely done. One thing to watch out with these helmets .... they do sting a bit when you smack the side of your head with one when casting. Ouch big time :)

Nice fly Martyn. I've often thought about experimenting with the sculpin helmet. They do look heavier than even my largest dumbell eyes. How are they to cast? I normally throw my larger flies for bass on an 8 weight. Cheers and thanks for sharing this tutorial.

I would say they are definitely heavier than dumbells, even the smallest size. I don't mind casting them short distances, but would be wary if I had to make a 90ft cast with any but the smallest size. That said, 40ft on a river is no problem and you know it will get down fast. Thanks for watching. All the best Martyn

Love this video, and want to try this pattern on some alpine lakes nearby. One question though - what kind of clamp did you use with the zonker strip? Haven't seen anything like it in my local fly shops. Thanks from Montana!

Mark in Montana for the dubbing loop? That's a Petijean clip you can use a bulldog clip from the stationery shop instead.

Hi Martyn, Great video, what size helmet have you used? Also what weight rod would you reccommend to fish these effectively.
@FlickingFeathers
@FlickingFeathers 8 лет назад
ze+Alex Williams I just match the sculpin head to the hook size. I used a small for this size 2. I fish them on a 6 which allows pretty long casts, I wouldn't feel comfortable with a lighter rod with these heads.

Hey man, what vise do you use? Ive been tying on a Cabelas travel kit since I was 12, and I think its time to upgrade if its affordable, what would you recommend?

Hi Dan, thanks for watching. This is an Anvil vice and it's OK. I am going to change soon I think. My favourite vice I have used is the Dyna King barracuda, but it's a bit pricey. Not sure what your budget is, but if you can, spend a bit more you'll have a vice that will last for a lifetime. All the best Martyn

Hi Martyn, Really like the pattern and thanks for sharing it. I have a question on the hook location as it is inverted. I understand the reason for this so you can move the pattern along the bottom with less risk of snagging but I'm wondering on hook ups vs. the normal hook position. I'm off to Alaska in July to fish the Kanektok River and before I tie loads of flies I'd value your opinion on this. Thanks Mark Hunt

Hi Mark, I haven't really experienced any hooking problems with inverted hooks. Especially baitfish patterns which get hit pretty hard. Good luck on your trip
