I remember you tipping me off to this color combo several years ago, I ran into you down on the river when I was a dumb college kid just getting into steelhead fishing, and I’ve used it ever since, got me my PB Salmon R. brown! Thanks for the great tutorial!

I have never been able to grasp the value of counter wrapping the wire. Wrapping it the same direction of the hackle wrap seemed to work just as well. Counter wrapping is said to strengthen the hackle wrap. The issue I noticed with counter wrapping is that the physics of it moving in the opposite direction would unwrap the hackle...loosening the tightness of the hackle. Wrapping forward the wire around the body/hackle would offer the same secureness to the hackle without the process unwrapping the hackle. You just need to make sure your notvwrapping the wire forward in-between the hackle....counter wrapping cross wraps the hackle more effortlessly but it's pretty easy to understand you need to wrap over the hackle. So the most important variable and behavior of material that was worth avoiding is the unwrapping of the hackle. This was the first fly Carl taught me. He said do you want the steelhead version or the O******a version...

Fly tiing is like anything else. Everybody has their own techniques.I will often counter wrap,To strengthen the body. It is tricky to take some practice.

Nice presentation. A simple but effective fly. It's tough to argue with success.

Jay, the Steelie Crack is really producing for me on our eastern ID & western WY streams. In particular, during one outing I experienced very selective spring creek rainbows moving several feet to slam a Steelie Crack floating dead drift under an indicator. Also, on several drifts they slammed the fly at the end of a drift on the swing. These are tough/pressured trout that really keyed on this fly. I think I found a neat application for your streamer. Try it on your streams in conjunction with a Juan worm or egg tied directly to the bend of the streamer in a classic tandem rig. Thanks again for sharing your guide fly.

If it works,it does,that chenille is often referred to as new age chenille under copper/black,I tie most of mine with brown grizzly saddle love the variation it produces,I do 2 things to help add 4 or 5 wraps of non -lead under the cone & for bass add rubber legs,tight lines & bent rods 🤙
@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing
I'm not sure if it's referred to this new age chenille, Or glow chenille. It is definitely Great for bass

I literally just used up the last of that chenille a month ago on my Cu Bugger pattern. Bought a bunch from you and Carl quite awhile back. Have had no luck finding a replacement. :o( Looks like you better open up the shop again.
@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing
Shops not going to be opening up soon, But Hope to have a good option for you and your future

@@JayPeckGuidesLostRiversFishing That sounds great. Questions - 1. why do you use such a light 8.0 thread? 2. Why not put the materials recipe in the description box. 3. do you ever weight with lead to center the bead & cone? Love your tying style - as an experienced tying, I learn something new from you every time you do a tying demo. Keep it up!
