The Squirmy Wormy is a modern fly fishing lure that's a variation of the San Juan Worm pattern. Dave Hise of Hickory, North Carolina invented the Squirmy Wormy in 2007 by replacing the San Juan Worm's super chenille with silicone tendrils from children's toys.
Squirmy Wormy flies are effective in both clear and dirty water and can be used to catch a variety of fish, including:
Trout
Grayling
Coarse fish like chub, dace, roach, or barbel
Carps, breams, and tenches
Predatory fish like perch and smaller pike
Here are some tips for fishing with Squirmy Wormy flies:
Short-range nymphing
This is the best approach for fishing through likely runs and pools. Trout often react strongly to the fly, sometimes pulling the rod out of your hand. Grayling tend to be more gentle.
