Fly Tying the Best of Both Emerger with Barry Ord Clarke

This is a very interesting pattern from Gordon van der Spuy’s first book, 'The feather mechanic’. The best of both, has two parachute hackles, one of traditional hackle and one of CDC. The lower CDC hackle helps give the emerger a more lifelike presentation, rather than the more static traditional hackle. It is also believed that the slightly larger footprint created by the CDC makes it more visible for the trout. The Opal tinsel body and copper wire rib makes a very realistic gas filled shuck ready to split and emerge. No matter what, this is a very nice pattern to tie and I can’t recommend it higher!
Hook: Mustad Heritage C49 # 12
Tying thread: Sheer 14/0 grey
Abdomen: UTC Opal pearl tinsel
Rib: Heavy copper wire
Post: Para post wing white
Thorax: Peacock herl
Hackle: Natural brown cock and CDC

Great tie! It kinda surprises me how few parachute patterns there are out there that utilize cdc instead of (or in addition to) a feather. It's so easy to do, it's more buoyant, and it's more "buggy".
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, you can actually replace most hackle types and styles with CDC!

Has there ever been a parachute style fly made with a post not of synthetic material? or was this style of fly invented after plastic posts were available?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 11 месяцев назад
Hi, yes there are many other materials used for parachute posts, deer hair, calf tail and snow shoe rabbit are a few of the more popular natural materials used.

Absolutely wonderful. You've driven me back to the vise, Barry. I'm thinking that extra CDC level would work too, on a standard Para Adams.

Excellent! Great news.. I can confirm that it works very well on an Adams.

@4:53, if you invert the bobbin while wrapping the post, your thread won’t slip and you can control the wraps way better. Try it!

@@Thefeatherbender great! Please tell me what you think. So just to be clear, your hook will be in the normal horizontal position and you will hold the bobbin vertical but upside down, then start wrapping. Cheers!

Another great tie, I will be tying some of these and utilising the method with cdc for other parachute hackled flies such as the klinkhamar, the cdc looks a great addition with the buggy effectand extra flotability. Really like the mustad heritage hooks but they are pain to source in the UK.

Nice as usual, guess what I wil be doing this weekend!! 2 questions Barry please, this is year round fly? The sheer thread, that is GG Sheer or is which manufacturer? TIA
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 11 месяцев назад
Hi Kevin, thanks. As an emerger if tied in different sizes to match the hatch you can fish it all year round. The Sheer thread is Gordon Griffiths, now made by Veniard.

The CDC hackle under the cock hackle looks a great addition to the fly, I will be using this technique on all the parachute hackled flies I tie including Klinkhammers, I llove the buggy look it gives the fly plus the extra flotability, I really like the heritage barbless hooks too but they are difficult to source in the UK.
