Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading three new tying videos a week, with the occasional extra video on other days.
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

You bet Rudy and thanks for watching my friend! I used to do four tying videos a week. That was getting to be a little much so I dropped down to two. Then I had a couple of nights a week where I got bored with nothing to make! So now I'm back up to three. Sometimes it's a chore but I'm still having fun and haven't burned out yet so I keep plugging along. (And no, I probably don't sleep enough!)

One little trick I learned tying in goose biots is to build a small football shaped build up of thread at the point of the biot tye in and that really helps keeping them spleyed apart.

Great lookin fly Matt.I still the old original prince.Yeasterday in the dye pot was deer hair.I am pickin up Cloie from school now,she is in for a surprise thie evening.It's deer tails,not buck tails,some are from bucks,some are from does.I have 18 or 19 got them from my local butcher shop,they throw then in the trash,now they save then for me.This weekend is going to be about chickens,capes and saddles.It's pretty here in the smokers leaves are starting to get there colors.Matt you and yours have a great weekend. Have fun with Cloie and all those freshly dyed deer tails. :-)

I never thought about using a prince nymph for smallmouth, I may have to give it a try before this season is over
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
I tell you David, I've usually had better luck smallmouth fishing with streamers but that one day, they were crushing the prince! And I wasn't even purposely fishing for smallmouth. I mean, I knew they might be in this water, but it was a delayed harvest trout stream. I was actually fishing for trout and got a couple in the morning, so when the first smallmouth hit, I thought I had a nice hefty 18-inch brown on the line. But it turns out a 14-16 inch smallmouth can be quite a slab of a fish. :-)

Nice pattern, one trick I do when using goose biots for tails is to put either a small ball of dubbing or just a build up of thread first to separate them... This forces the biots to stay in place, even when wet...

Depending on how my fingers want to behave (vs. how my mind is trying tell them to operate), biots can be awfully fussy, so I’m alway happy to learn an alternate method. Thanks, Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Absolutely! I guess the misleading thing about using biots in a video is that it probably looks like I snipped them off and immediately put them on the hook. I assure you that rarely happens. It probably takes me a good minute to get the tips even, the back sides together, and then to pick one of them back up after dropping it. But I can edit that out and not make ya'll suffer watching me fumble around with them. But this does make me wonder if anybody watching this thought, "Wow, I'm never that fast with biots." I should probably tell everybody that I'm not either. :-)

You and me both my friend! I've caught a lot of species with the Prince Nymph, in lots of different waters. And in some places I *know* the fish had never even seen an artificial fly, but they loved it. We may never learn what they think it is. :-)

I sure have Dave! I grew up in north Georgia so took a few vacations to Gatlinburg as a kid. But it's a pretty long way from me now so I've probably only fished there three times in the last four years. Tuckaseegee River and Oconoluftee River near Bryson City. And I was driving through this past summer and stopped for a night at the campground there on the Little River. I love the area and am planning a spring trip next year.
