Created by Greg Carrier and found in Randle Scott Stetzer's "Flies, the Best One Thousand" the Don King is an easy-to-tie marabou leech pattern.
Hook: #2-8 2-3x long
Thread: Black
Rib: Gold or copper wire
Body: Brown goat (or any fur)
Wing: Black marabou, tied Matuka style

Really nice job on that matuka-style marabou wing. I would not want a closeup camera of me tying that pattern! And nobody would want to hear the audio! I imagine one reason its an effective pattern is that it eliminates the "scissors effect" of a standard marabou tie, where the hook and body dip down and the wing stays up during the pause in retrieve. Headed to Vermont and Maine later this month. I should tie some of these up. Thanks Matt!

This is a devastating pattern that I use for salmon, steelhead, and brown trout. I'll also tie this using rabbit or pine squirrel zonkers on top of a chenille body. It just more durable than marabou features. Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend.

Great looking fly Matt, Thanks for sharing. I know that some tyers like to moisten their marabou after tying it in to help tame it. Doing that may help with this pattern since the ribbing process looks to be a bit fussy. I don't like sticking my fingers in my mouth so I've always kept a small section of wetted sponge at the tying station and it's proved to be very useful.

I know what you mean Daryl and I actually did wet my fingers on one of the earlier ones I tied and it didn't make any difference in this case. Maybe I was doing it wrong! But yes, excellent tip for working with marabou overall. One thing I have to be careful with though, is when I wet it, even slightly, it can take a big fluffy tuft of marabou and make it look tiny. And then when it dries 30 seconds later, it's huge again! But I guess that's why it's such a cool material. :-)

The matuka technique here probably helps with fouling. So many Maine traditional streamers are tied with marabou or saddles as a wing, these foul like crazy. Nice solution here that I will try on some of my favorite streamers.

I think that's an excellent take on it. I always struggle with fouling feather wings, particularly if they wing is much past the hook bend. It does make me wonder if that's why the creator of this one did it this way. Could very well be!

I tie a similar pattern with a few white marabou fibers on top right down the middle. I will change up the white with various other colors. Sometimes I add weight. Great pattern. Thanks for sharing, Matt. Have a great weekend.

@@SavageFlies I like the "swimming" motion of a bit of weight toward the eye of the hook. I also tie most of them on keel hooks with the weight at the first bottom bend.

Oh man, lucky you to have a fly shop close! But wait... you don't have black marabou?? Get some of that ASAP. I couldn't live without black, white and red marabou. :-)

Nice fly! Laughed when read the name and saw the fly.😂 I love black leach patterns for largemouth, they almost always catch fish. I like the ribbing technique, I’m sure it makes it durable, may also try some without it. Someone in comments mentions using zonkers, love them too. A local guide Alvin Dedeaux in Austin ties a Dedeaux Snake. I make a 5”version on 1\0 hook with yellow lead eyes and use black med. Estaz chenille for body and have caught many bass up to 8lbs. Thanks Justin! I actually tried wetting it on this one, like I usually do when working with marabou... but it didn't help me too much on this one. I mean, it did for tying it on, but when I was done, I ended up with big noticeable gaps where the rib was. I probably just need more practice. :-)

First time I’ve seen a zonker style technique for marabou. It looks good. Leeches are found just about everywhere, so it should be very effective.

Yep, it was a first for me too! It was a little finicky to get it to look right with the wire, but I think in the end it might look more like a leech than a zonker strip or fluttering marabou would. :-)

Cool looking pattern. Never seen that sort of matuka style of tying a clump of marabou for a wing. Two leech patterns in that Orvis Index I've told you about ties individual bunches of marabou along the hook, the thread then becomes the body. You did a great job on this one. Say, you tied another fly you said looked like Don King, right? Say hi to Daisy :o)

Ha! But no, this is the only Don King fly I've ever tried. Maybe we should come up with a Mike Tyson fly. Hmmm... maybe call it an Iron Mike. Not sure what that would look like though. :-)

You’re in a time warp Joe! But this would be an odd thing to have deja vu about. There MUST have been some other tie on RU-vid mentioning good ole Don King. But you know, I have done almost 300 flies on the channel and some I have actually forgotten about. One of the first things I look up when I pick a fly to tie, is to see if anybody has already done a video. I forget which one it was but the other week I was about to tie one and the RU-vid search returned my own video. D’oh!

Luke, welcome my friend! Some people will cut their own zonker strips but most of us just buy them already cut. It's much easier and they're not too expensive.

It's there a benefit of tying that way instead of having a Marabou wing?

The only thing I can think of Thomas, is that when you just tie the marabou in at the head, when you retrieve this in short pulls, the marabou will flutter away from the body and back again. Kind of a scissor effect. I imagine it might look strange if we're trying to imitate a leech. Doing it this way I think keeps the feather closer to the body during the whole retrieve. (This is just my guess. I'm not 100% sure though.)
