Umpqua's latest line of fly tying tools: their Dreamstream+ 7-piece Tool Kit. Reviewed in this kit: Bobbin Holder, Scissors, Whip Finish Tool, Hackle Pliers, Hair Stacker, Bobbin Threader and Bodkin.
At $79 US, there are several quality tools in this kit (plus a really nice case).
*** Congratulations to Tyler (T-Money in the comments), he was the winner of the drawing.
If you are interested in purchasing this kit, it is usually available at J. Stockard: www.jsflyfishing.com/item/of-...
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading new tying videos every Tuesday and Friday, with the occasional extra video on other days.
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Ha! As far as my wife knows, that's all I have too. The cool thing about fly tying materials and tools, I can order a lot and she just sees the small package arrive. I recall a couple of times spending a small fortune on an order and the package is small enough to fit in my mailbox! Who would have thought that two hundred dollars worth of hooks will fit in an envelope? Oh well... such is the life of a fly tying addict. :-) Thanks for the laugh Todd...

Matt, I agree with you on the bobbin threader, any bobbin large enough to stick that one through, I can suck the thread through with my mouth. The hackle plyers look great. The pad on the bottom of the hair stacker dampens the shock that stacks the hair, so I prefer no pad. Most scissors that fail to cut is because I drop them. The whip finish tool looks good, the one I have works well, I have been whip finishing more by hand especially if there are lots of materials in the way. As for the bodkin, I have been using some micro crochet hooks for many tasks I used to use the bodkin for, I spent $10 for about a dozen at a garage sale. Thanks for the tool review and the give-away. cheers my friend. Have you fished at all on Back Creek near Gore VA. Thanks Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Exactly right Lee! That's something I haven't talked about but have done plenty of times myself-- sucking the thread through the tube. :-) And one other method if you're traveling and forgot the threader, just use some UTC ultra wire. I've done that a few times too. My first bodkin was one of my mom's sewing needles taped to a pencil. Regarding Back Creek, I've never fished it but I go through Winchester on the way to my farm in western Maryland. I don't get all the way to Gore, but just after Winchester I head north up through Paw Paw and my farm is just across the WV/MD border. So is Back Creek worth stopping by? I could probably stop for a couple hours someday when I'm heading out...

Hmm, a pet bunny or a periodic dubbing source? 😊 great channel Matt and thanks for the effort you go through. One can never have enough bobbins. I'm up to 5 and I wish I had more. Also funny that you prefer form on the bottom of your stacker. A couple tyers have recommended to me to strip off the cork. Says it absorbs too much energy and impedes the stacking process.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
I've heard that too about the foam or cork on the bottom of your stacker. I've never noticed a difference but might have to start paying attention to it. And I have so many rabbits but most of this last litter are the black and white Dutch breed. (And they're too cute to make dubbing out of!)

Oh man, I have some bunny stories. Mostly in two outdoor colonies, separated with male and females. But they're all the time digging out and sneaking across to get to the other pen. I eventually gave up so I have two females living free range in my back wood shed. Then a male got out and these two does have both had litters. I bring the babies in as soon as I can catch them (or else the wildcats and foxes will get them). I couldn't bear to make dubbing out of these little guys so I'll keep them inside with me until they're old enough to take to the Amish farmer's market. Fun times on the Savage Flies farm. :-)

@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Thanks Jon- and I'm with you 100% there. I like my Stonfo but it takes me some tweaking to get the right tension so it's a great one to put a spool in it, get it adjusted, and not have to mess with until you use all the thread. I think the Rite bobbins are better if you do a lot of thread change outs. But you know the one I've found myself going to more and more this past year? It's the C&F. It's not sold at a lot of places but this thing has been a champ for me. I got mine from Bearsden I think (www.bearsden.com/product8908.html). A bit pricey so I only have one, but man do I like it. :-)

Interesting info on the costs. I recommend against using any wire for threading bobbin holders. I scratched up the inside of the tubes of 2 of my bobbin holders with wire threader. Buy some dental floss threaders (very cheap) to thread bobbin holders. They are very good for all holders & especially for those with narrow tubes like on the Rite bobbins. I now use those 2 scratched up bobbin holders to hold & apply my non-lead weighting wire. Note to Matt, that would be a good use for that Not so favorite bobbin holder.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 3 года назад
Bob- excellent tips! Someone else mentioned the dental floss threaders. I'm going to have to look into them. And an even better idea about using these Umpqua bobbin holders for wire wraps. I doubt I'll be using them much in my regular tying so I might as well repurpose them for something. Thanks for the note!
@FlyTyer1948
@FlyTyer1948 3 года назад
@@SavageFlies I hold the very tip of the wire in EZ-Hackle Pliers, wrap the wire using the unloved bobbin holder to making touching turns going forward just as I would do with thread, & then wiggle the wire to snap it off cleanly. I recommend holding hold the hook just before the snap-off point & holding the wire directly, just beyond the end of the end of the bobbin holder so the holder tip doesn’t get damaged. Then remove the hackle pliers & complete the wrap there. It’s faster & creates almost no wasted wire.

Good video! Wanted to try a new fly tying toy and got the Umpqua Dreamstream+ Whip Finish Tool. Something I do not understand, what is that piece of metal sticking out at the end of handle used for? Also, in comparison to others whips there is not way to hold the whip sturdy and not spinning at the beginning of the whip setup.

What would you rate the SF Fly Tying kit…I do believe they knocked off Umpqua. They are about half the cost.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
If you're talking about this one ( amzn.to/3a03oFt ) I haven't actually tried it out. But just looking at it online right now, I think it's a decent kit. The scissors look solid, the bobbin holder does appear to have a ceramic tip (a plus), and it does have a Matarelli whip finish tool. But I also like the XFishman one as well ( amzn.to/3A4ELSK ). Its biggest plus was four bobbins and two pairs of decent scissors. Thanks for the note. I just ordered the SF kit so I can review it. Keep on the lookout for that in the next couple of weeks. :-)

@@SavageFlies the $40 one was the one I’m talking about yes. I could be wrong in the clone of the Umpqua, these could be a clone of the Loon. Sent you an email as well with some more questions.

Hey Matt, can I send you a picture of my stuff in a tote? I've just moved and I don't have a bench set up yet, and might not for a while, I'm getting ready to move into a motor home so I can go fishing for the rest of my life. I liked the honesty in your review. Keep the good stuff coming. #bunny

Johnny- whatever you want to send is fine. I know you're a tier. Nobody else would have watched as many of my videos and left funny comments if they weren't fellow tying nerds like us. :-)

Thank you for creating these reviews. I’m new to this hobby and these are quite useful discussions. I’d love to see a review series on products made in the US. I’m just interested in American-made products for my own reasons, and it has nothing to do with politics or other peoples’ beliefs. I know there’s a lot of folks out there who support slavery, state-sponsored genocide, censorship, and the myriad human rights violations perpetuated by the PRC against the good people of Chinese and Tibet. For some the abduction, and possible execution, of a young, Chinese female tennis player is acceptable if it keeps the price of braid scissors under $5, and matchbox cars under $1 each at the Walmart. Others of us don’t mind paying a little more if it means the fruits of our labor aren’t supporting crimes against humanity. Just as a small mountain spring flows down joining other brooks and creeks to become mighty rivers that fill oceans, perhaps one day small decisions at the margin will swell into powerful forces of positive change. Perhaps; but today I’m just looking for a solid, American-made setup for tying flies and catching fish. Thank you for your reviews.

Yep, for 80 bucks I would have expected a bit more. Overall it's solid, but after really considering it I think new tiers can get a little more bang for their buck by picking and choosing.
