Hey, Dewey, I learned to fly in a Champ, back in the early 1960’s, while I was a Line Crewman at a Houston Hobby Airport FBO. I solo’ed, and flew several times around the Houston, Galveston area. The Champ I flew was white with a red strip on the side. It was so much fun to fly. Unfortunately, because Line Crewman, at that time, didn’t make a lot of money, I was unable to continue my flight lessons, after about 20+ hours. And, I was drafted into the US Army a year later. After the Army, I still couldn’t afford to start flying again. In later years, life, family, and career took priority, and didn’t allow me to continue either. Now I’m 79 years old, and too old to start over. Plus health issues now wouldn’t allow me to pass a physical. Things in aviation have sure changed a lot since the early 1960’s. But, I’m still an aviation buff, and really enjoyed your flight. I plan to watch more of them. Thanks, Dewey, for the enjoyment of watching this fun flight, and helping me bring back memories.

You could go for a sport pilot license it's cheaper than a private pilot license and you'll have certain restrictions but you won't be required to have a medical. The biggest issue you'll run into is finding a school that offers a sport pilot license as they need to have an airplane that qualifies as a light sport.

Great flight. I'm the caretaker of my dads Champ. He bought it in 1961, I soloed it in 1971 at age 16 so that tells you how old I am. I think its cool you have a long connection with your Champ. They really become family members.

We have a lot in common. I learned to fly in a 1947 Chief with a A-65. Flew skydivers for 6 years. Now flying for Republic as a Captain on the 170, but my favorite flying is in a champ, or a chief, or a Funk. I fly my friends planes when I can. Looking to get my own Champ someday! Hey Dewey, I work for the same company that you do. I’m in the Latitude fleet. I owned a Champ for a little over 10 years. I’ve owned lots of planes since then but the Champ remains my all time favorite. Inexpensive to own, easy to get in and out of the hangar by yourself, and just a pleasure to fly. Also it’s a good conversation piece. Everybody and his brother has a Champ story to tell, just like me. 😁 Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for watching and commenting. My Champ is definitely a of me. It has a history that makes it unique. I will probably keep this plane forever. Everyone does have a champ story for sure. This Summer one of the kids that flies my Champ took up a guy that learned to fly in a champ some 40 plus years ago. It was a emotional time for him. :)

Hi Dewey, thank you for the video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m working on my instruments rating now on some pretty new C172 but I can’t wait to try and fly in a champ or a j3 some day. There is something about the simplicity of such aircraft with no electrical system, no bells and whistles, flying low and slow that attracts me. Unfortunately here in Colorado these would probably struggle with the DA…

...LOL that has got to be the fastest preflight ever! Thanks for this! Brings back memories of my first checkout after Super Cub! And one my father owned 12 years. I rode co-pilot but had to give one demo of my landings to prove to him I was "just as good" (his words). One of my instructors was W.W. II USAAC instructor and when he saw my C-I-G-A-R-T-I-P attempt during a recurrency checkride he grabbed it away from me and chewed me a new one. After decades I still don't know what all that was about. Personal-? My Dad was an "IFR" pilot: "I Follow Roads". No radio no electrics just a Mark One eyeball. Never made Blakesburg (in it) but we had fun.

Dewey that that was a great flight around your patch,it was just as if we were sitting in the cockpit of the fine little Aeronca Champ with you taking in all of that lovely scenery and sights plus your stories of old, that farm strip with the road come runway is interestingk, you are right nothing like flying to get the stress levels down in simple airplanes flying by the seat of your pants, the sideslip demonstration was interesting and quite benign too in the Champ but it works well, what was that blue ultralight parked at the front of the hangar ? looking forward to more simple adventures just like this one they do not have to be complicated to enjoy them, thank you for sharing your aviation life with us.
