Good tips. However I would add a few tips: 1) Emergency Landing due to fly away: Always have a plan B landing spot downwind in case the wind picks up. 2) Landing in high winds: Unless you can land in the wind shadow of a bush or similar it's best to learn how to "catch" the drone rather then landing it. Easy with the Phantom less so with the Mavic and Inspire. Some good instruction videos on youtube on how to do this. 3) Take-off in high winds: Good tip re take off in wind shadow. If there is no wind shadow the safest take-off is by having the stick at full throttle and keep at that until the drone gets up to about 20 meters. One last point. In 20knts+ winds the Phantom 4 camera housing actually catches on the gimbal when the flying in a 45 degree angle to the wind. This particularly happens while flying an arch around a point. When that happens the gimbal will lockup temporarily with an error message.

Thank you, I fly in erratic weather conditions frequently and like everything you've mentioned here. I've never lost a drone and will try not to, higher altitudes often have higher wind speeds and it can get a little challenging. I also do what you've already mentioned, fly against the wind going out and with the wind coming back. I am having problems with range limitations with the P4Pro+ thanks Tony!

Thanks for the video! Wind conditions can change on a dime here, and I’ve had a few hairy flights over time. The very first and most effective thing to do as soon as you feel the drone being carried away by the wind is to bring it down to the lowest safe altitude. Even if it seems hopeless the drone usually begins to respond at around 80ft. Map out clear safe open areas in the vicinity ahead of time (particularly downwind) so you can bring it down in an emergency if need be. Worst thing to do (and I only made this mistake once!) is to panic and hit the Return To Home mode. That will automatically raise the altitude of the drone and its automatic responses will be too slow almost guaranteeing that it will blow away like a kite.

What’s up Tony ( Greg from Pville Band ). One thing I’ve learned to do in high wind retrieval is zig zag across the direction of the wind like swimming out of rip currents. I had to do this in Hurricane Harvey, in sports mode. I have P4, and top speed I’ve hit so far is 65mph, downwind. Luckily had enough battery power for a 18mph return flight in S mode. I used clip in my Deep Transmission video mix on my RU-vid channel over Galveston island.

Besides the uav forecast app , another way to check if its good to fly is to attempt "windmilling" the drone's props against the wind . if the wind ground speed is strong enough to turn the props , consider it a no go

Do not use the automatic takeoff feature on the DJI Go app for taking off in windy conditions. Instead, move the sticks both in and down to get the motors spinning and then go to full throttle to quickly get it off the ground so it doesn't tip over. Also, hand catch it when landing. I actually hand catch mine all the time and take off using the aforementioned method just so I don't tip the drone over....."anymore". Oh, and when you do tip one over, it's best to just go ahead and replace the props. They're cheap; your drone is not.

Yestwrday i nearly lost my air2s flying in heavy wind, it was a new experience for me as it showed can't return home plus the batteries drained so quick and it was blown away 1kilometer away from me and was lucky enough to land it on some ground but it took me 2hrs to find it, always remember to not fly in windy conditions plus dont go to high altitudes and if you are not aware about the location you are about to safe land always record during the time, because it may help you to trace the unknown location even if your find my drone doesn't work of dead battery

Great video, good tips. If you want to fly in high winds without problems get a YUNEEC Typhoon H. I never have any trouble in any wind conditions due to its immense power given by 2 extra motors. I have flown in winds up to 7 Bft (around 70 KM/H) without a problem. Even penetrating against the wind is hardly any effort. I'm not worried I'll ever lose it in windy conditions. In my opinion it beats the Phantom on almost every level as an aerial camera platform. Except for battery life and stock range but with the itellite DBS antenna it is perfect in every way.

Been bingeing on your older content when I came across this informative video. I've made it a habit to hand launch & catch it when it returns when winds are over 8-10 mph. Here in Idaho we can have a steady wind of 5 mph, but it will often gust at 10-15. I've had a number of instances where my P4P would get caught in one of these gusts, causing it to tip over and ruin a prop or two, so hand launching/catching resolves this problem. For those new to drones, obviously please be care if you try this yourself and I would only advise doing this with the Phantom series, as you really don't have a good place to grab if you're flying a Mavic or even an Inspire. I have seen some guys manage it with the Inspire series, but it can be a bit tricky. Thanks for sharing! 👍

Hand catch in wind here too, P3, launching doesn't seem so prone to flipping and I always go up 3 or 4 ft quickly. If I can think on I'll have to check the rotor speeds in the drone logs and see whether the 'landing idle' is faster than the 'start up idle'.

WAIT A MINUTE! As someone who has had several broken gimble assemblies and cameras as a result of some "moderate" crashes (even small tree limbs, etc), I am really hoping that DJI can make a more heavy duty and perhaps a much more "crash resistant" gimble/camera assembly on all future models of their otherwise great drones! This would be even more important to me than new whiz-bang features, as none of these aren't much good if you can't fly it or must spend tons of money and time repairing broken parts, etc. My last gimble repair cost me around $500! And enough is enough!

Thank you for sharing this! I lost a drone once in high winds once. Couldn't recover it cos it crashed in the woods. A little tip to add to this is that if your drone is struggling a headwind to get back to you, try flying lower where winds are typically not so strong, especially if you're over water

Tony, I've noticed over and over the "V" shape orientation that you keep your DJI Controller Antennas. Have you done testing to find this is a preferred orientation? Image after image in the DJI documentation all illustrate and text indicate that the strongest signal is when the two are parallel.

It is true what Tim Moses say by going down to the lowest safe altitude in high winds. I have two drones the Fimi X8 SE and the Hubsan Zino Pro+ I don't know why the Hubsan Zino Pro+ can only fly at max 10m/s and the sports mode do not kick in for a higher speed. But I did notice that the drone speed can go up to 14 m/s on the return to home when activated, which helped me getting my Hubsan Zino Pro+ back in high winds. Just a hint to Hubsan Zino Pro+ owners.

My best is 103kmh on the P3 and 99kmhb on the mavic. Burned 70% of the battery flying into the headwind before flying it back at top speed. Flying it at a 45 degree angle seems to yield slightly more Top speed.

Came so close losing the thing last week... was about to start running towards it LOL FLying a Mavic Pro .... switched to sport and started descending. As I came down the wind was less harsh. So, up high is much worse than what you experience on the ground. I couldn't believe it was flying backwards when I could barely feel the wind on the ground.

Greentings.This is the best video I can see explaining about the danger of flying in strong wind conditions.Good video I subscribe to yours channel.I would not fly in conditions of 15 mph because at higher altitudes,the worse it would be to fly, the risk of losing the drone.As you said,you always fly against the wind,when you return,do not fight with the wind.We find with a strong wind to get as low as possible and as you said land the drone fast in a safe thanks for the tips help many people.

All about knots. My little boat barely got me back to shore one time. 7hp outboard was great for trolling. Wind arrived and capsized a Catamaran near me. They waded to shore, thankfully. Another guy with a 10hp said no way Jose. Too much for him to go help. 40 knots? Wind on open water. Great way to lose a drone. Two foot breakers on a semi vee 14 footer is a lot to bust through. My boat mate turned green.

Dji drones don't have any sensor that measure speed relative to the air. That means that the software speed limit is either relative to ground, or it is just a rough estimation based on the tilt angle.

Surely if the drone can do 60 mph, but is normally limited to say 40, then the speed would be calculated with the gps? Shouldn't it then be able to fly into 40mph wind and still do 20mph?
@natedornbirer
@natedornbirer 6 лет назад
The software limits this. There are ways to change the values in the code to allow for higher altitudes, speed, etc., but this voids your warranty. Plus, these specific values were set based on the physical limits of the drone's hardware. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. It could wear out parts, overheat the engines and other components, cause battery overloads, which results in the battery dumping substantial power (Did it once with my Mavic Pro in sport mode. I was ascending, and forward pitching at max speed. My bat. overheated and dumped 25% of its power). The moral of the story is to know how to engage sport mode in snap(if using DJI), and to fly in appropriate conditions. Happy flying!

Another thing you can if the drone is unable to return against high winds is to return in a 2-part movement, so as to return into the wind diagonally twice instead of head on.
@williamlitlle1308
@williamlitlle1308 4 года назад
I have seen mention of that before and don't understand how it can work, can you explain it?
@terrendously
@terrendously 4 года назад
William Litlle this is if you have a situation where the drone is over-powered by the wind when facing it head on, and it either cannot advance or even goes backwards, or it moves so slowly that the battery will die before it reaches a safe landing location. So step 1 would be to try sport mode, and if that doesn’t work do a 2 part diagonal movement. You go somewhat in the right direction but not fully facing the wind, and then turn again also not fully facing the wind to get back to where you originally intended. So if you are south heading north, instead of going straight north, go NorthEast and then go NorthWest.
@williamlitlle1308
@williamlitlle1308 4 года назад
@@terrendously Thanks, in what follows I am not arguing with you, I am simply trying to get to grips with the concepts involved. I may have even seen this behaviour myself, I was in a bit too much of a panic to really take notice lol. I had been blown over houses and was getting set to fly sideways over the sea and crash it when I began to gain headway Assume the drone is flying at its maximum airspeed, then, to me, if the drone flies at an angle to the wind rather than directly into the wind, that part of its air speed that is into wind is reduced. So, if it can't make headway when flying directly into wind it can not make headway when flying at an angle to the wind. By way of explanation, imagine a right angle triangle with the maximum airspeed being the hypotenuse and of fixed length. The into-wind air speed is then one side of the triangle and the across-the-wind air speed is the other side. If the angle between the wind direction and the hypotenuse is anything other than zero then the into-wind air speed is reduced. Taking it that you are correct then something I am not considering is happening when it flies at an angle to the wind and it is this something I am seeking to understand. Thanks
@terrendously
@terrendously 4 года назад
William Litlle i know it works but I don’t have the scientific explanation. It’s the same logic for why it is recommended to swim in two diagonal movements instead of head-on against a current when being swept away into the ocean.

Useful advice. You fly directly over some houses in the video is that legal?

How did i miss this video, 😥😥! I crashed my drone on Oct 28, everything happened the way you described it here! Had to climb a cliff and go down across a huge river to fetch it! I almost died during that process and the back of my drone is crushed! Luckily, i think it can still fly!

If you have to fly a job and wind is within limits, it's profitable to be able to safely work on suboptimal days. It's sets the top pilots apart from less experienced.

The data on the new inspire is incorrect I just got myself one and already went past the stock speed not really limited to much but great video

Giving me nightmares to that one time I flew my Mavic Pro in high winds and had to use some tree lines and building to fly back to me.

The phantoms are really not all that known for their stability considering the Mavic out does it and I have a test every time even the parrot bebop is able to pretty much cover as good as a phantom

The DJI Inspire can only go 55 mph? The software won't let it go faster even though it is capable of higher speed? Did Apple make the software?

You can't get real good video or pics in high winds (20mph+) So why bother risking your equipment.
