If you want to fly on some rare older props, Sweden is a good place to do it. After flying on the hard-to-find Fokker 50 ( • From the flight deck: ... ) our next goal was to catch a ride on a homegrown plane: a Saab turboprop. Join us on a quick flight down from Stockholm to Malmö on the increasingly rare, long out of production Saab 340B.

For a 34-seat turboprop, the Saab 340 is actually very quiet. Not a jet...but very quiet. It was my favorite plane to fly. Unbelievably well built. Like a 1980s Mercedes with wings.

Flew many flights on Northwest throughout the southeast in the late 80's thru mid 90's. Small and loud, but serviced small airports flawlessly. Watching this video brought back many memories.

Over 50 Saab 340s are still in use with Rex Airlines based in Wagga Wagga, Australia. I fly to Sydney several times a year on the 340; it's such a sweet aircraft with a mesmerizing drone from the props when taxiing.

I loved flying the Saab 340 when they served my hometown airport of EVV. We first had them as Republic Express in the mid 80's and then Northwest Airlink when they both served EVV to their MEM hub. I flew on them many times to MEM and to GTR (Golden Triangle Airport) serving Columbus, Starkville, and West Point, MS. Sometimes they would stop at Paducah, KY on the way to and from EVV. I always like to sit on the one seat side just in front of the wing and watch the props. Yes, it was a loud airplane. They had their on built in air stairs which the flight attendant would have to raise and then slide it to the side to close the pxr door. It could be turbulent at times, especially in the hot and humid summer months where I live as they did not fly as high as a larger jet. Overall, a great plane that served us well. Thank you for sharing this video....brings back great memories!

I just came across this video. The former Northwest Airlines had a fleet of the SAAB A340's. I absolutely loved flying on them. I'd say I've been on at least a couple hundred A340 flights, easily. Loud, cramped, bumpy... but I flew to the same little regional airports so often that I got to know the ground crews at each airport. One quality of the SAAB A340's that I quite enjoyed was the ability to instantly fall asleep as soon as the engines kicked in. The hum of the engines are my lullaby. There were many flights that I don't remember taking off, and the next thing I know I feel the thump as we are landing. Man, I miss those flights.

Not so rare in Australia with over 60 registered mostly with Regional Express Rex, but also Link Airways and Pel Air (cargo). A superbly reliable aircraft for the outback areas and I expect them to fly for many more years. SE-ISG is a Saab 340B built in September 1989.

I've never flown on a Saab 340, but I have flown on a similar Ryanair ATR 42 from my home city of Waterford to London Luton and back on another turboprop, an older Hawker Siddeley 748. I'v have seen Saab 340's at Atlanta Airport and two friends of mine, the widow and daughter of my favourite actor Doug McClure (Trampas in The Virginian) flew on one from LA to Oklahoma City for Doug's induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers in 2014. I flew up from Houston on the same airline, United, but on a Embraer RJ 140 which has the same seat configuration, I learned from this video, as the Saab 340, one row of seats on the left two rows on the right. I got some great photos from my left hand side seat. What brought me here was I that I saw a Saab 340 on Flightradar 24 flying just south of Waterford, a SkyTaxi flight from Wroclaw in Poland, I think it landed here.

My walk between the bus and work goes directly under the close approach of Perth AU airport. become quite a planespotter. hence a flightradar24 addict. I can now easily ID the Saab 340 from quite a distance. and it does have a distinctive sound, different to the Embraers and DeHavillands. It flys the commuter route from Albany to Perth, about 400km. occasionally they'll put a Dash 8 on the route if its heavily booked (usually a Friday). the Dash 8's go all over the state, but Perth to Albany is the Saabs only consistent route. Im planning a weekender to Albany to visit a mate soon. A pretty big reason is just to go for a joyride on the Saab. Im not gonna tell them that tho. also keen to ride the dashie, but I don't know anybody in the areas it regularly flies to over here.

One should that this flight was made during the pandemic. By now (dec -21) Malmö and other swedish cities are frequently served mainly by ATR-72 . (Air Leap has moved to ARN, serving a few regional airports in cooperation with SAS. So there is normalcy again att BMA and the closure is postponed.

Air Philippines should've gotten this aircraft when the brand was still existing in the 90s, and if they had gotten this aircraft, I can imagine that PAL Express would've inherited this aircraft from them. So in general, I'm curious to know why the Saab 340 wasn't popular in Asia?
