The aircraft is safe, it’s a nice plane. There isn’t really that many incidents for an older aircraft. She’s also very good in a crosswind!!

The Saab 340 should be called “The Airbus”

I operate the Saab 340. It’s T700 engine (CT7 is the civilian version of this engine) is actually the same engine used in Blackhawk helicopters.

The Saab is a very safe aircraft and don't let this put you off flying them. Remember they have been flying for 37 years which makes it an average of 2.5 incidents a year which is very very low compared to other aircraft.

I have flown the Saab 340 for over 20 years, in Alaska for Peninsula Airways. Never had an engine failure, the company did not have many engine failures or fires. I have flown this plane into runways less than 4000 feet many times and in many conditions, very reliable very capable aircraft. Oh I I also flew into St Barts… not that big of a deal if you are on profile….

I'm from Canada and live in the Cayman Islands. Both airlines from each country (WestJet and Cayman Express) operate the SAAB 340. I like it, never knew it had that problem.

I flew on this plane from KLAX to KPSP; handles like a fighter and is quite a workhorse. BTW it's commonly referred to at St. Barts and Saba (say-ba) as I've visited both on a large 4-masted sailing ship (M/V Polynesia) from Barefoot Windjammer Cruises (now out of business). I saw a Twin Otter land on Saba and didn't think it would make it not a shred of flat land--only goats seem to be able to live there. No beaches. Really atypical for a Caribbean island. Embraer just announced today that they are designing a 30-60 and 60-90 replacement for this and other turboprops. Your posts crack me up (yah, at least once per clip) LOL

I have flown with SAAB 340's for many years in Sweden. There were some problems when it was introduced but no fatal incidents due to engine problems in Europe as far as I know.

Im traveling from my local «micro-airport» in this aircraft today (On a lowfare ticket). So I thought I might do some background research on what kind of an aircraft I could expect. Well, this was the first video that showed up when I searched for SAAB 340. Great! Thanks RU-vid.

I think the Saab 340 could actually operate at Courchaval because the Dash-7 actually operated to that airport! You should try and find a Dash-7 for X-Plae and fly it around these extreme airports!

They used to fly up here in Alaska by the name, Peninsula Airways. At one time they flew Fairchild Metroliners and expanded their ops to the SAAB 340, and eventually the SAAB 2000. Seen a few videos from friends who flew from the Pribilofs Islands to Anchorage (nearly 800 miles) and had many engine failures including a couple fires. Should have stuck with the Meteoliners!

I’ve done many a flight on a SAAB 340 with Rex here in Australia (yes, same airline that lost a prop!) Luckily I’ve never been involved with any incident with them. Great little plane that serves short haul regional routes well. Here they compete with the Dash-8 and ATR-72 from Qantas and Virgin Australia respectively.

a few years back i was taking a silver airways (they only operate saab’s) flight from key west to orlando. once they closed the cabin door and went for the left engine start, smoke started pouring out of it. everything in the plane shut off and we got off about 10 minutes later, and silver being the great airline they are didn’t have a replacement for us for about 8 hours.

Well, where should I start? In my opinion, the SAAB 340 is a very safe and comfortable plane. Well, there indeed have been quite a few problems with the engines, though there never was a fatal crash caused by only the engines. - -fatal crashes- - KLM Cityhopper 433 According to the NASB, this crash was caused by a pilot error during an emergency landing. Well, engine malfunction, but not the cause. Of the crash. - Formosa Airlines The aircraft had obvious problems before takeoff, or even boarding. The aircraft should have been taken to maintenance, but the pilots decided to fly anyway, which resultet in failures of the navigation system and flight instruments. Then the pilots basically didn't know what to do and the plane crashed similar to Air France 447. - Sol Lineas Aéreas 5428 Based on wrong weather informations, the crew flew right into icing conditions, which caused the aircraft to stall. - Crossair 498 They basically did almost everything wrong from the beginning and used the auto pilot too early. The pilot then turned the plane harshly to the right, because he had lost orientation. When they already where in a spiral dive, the pilots basically did nothing to prevent a crash. Didn't help, that the pilot seemed to have taken drugs and didn't have a lot of flight hours on the SAAB 340. Apart from these fatal crashes, there have of course also been other incidents with for example heavy crosswinds, but also engine malfunctions. It could also habe been worth mentioning, that the bigger variant of the SAAB 340, the SAAB 2000, still holds three world records: -Fastest turboprop to climb to 3000ft -Fastest turboprop to climb to 6000ft -Fastest turboprop to climb to 9000ft. Apart from that, they are known to be quite overpowered. Would have been nice, if you had covered that in your Video. Thanks.
