As a high school kid 79-80, I worked as a Ramper for Catalina Airlines on the Island side. We had a number Goose(s) and various helicopters. Will never forget the sounds and smells of those planes. There's nothing like the sound of a radial engine. Wonderful to see such a well maintained model.
I flew to Catalina many times in the summer late 1960s my mom moved there an bought a house Casa grande stayed with my dad in Santa Barbara for schooling great memories
Apart from a few bits of worn paint around the rudder pedals, I cant spot a single thing on that aircraft that isn’t absolutely immaculate. I didn’t know it was possible to keep a plane in that perfect a condition. What a joy to behold. Stunning, truly stunning.
I would possibly act like some control freak if I had such a perfectly maintained plane and people wet from a swim would want to sit on my leather seats lol
40 seconds into the video and couldn't wait to say; I'm in love with your Goose, especially the colors, both interior and exterior! Amazing capture, thanks for the magnificent views.
Besides the obvious compliments to the pilot and the maintenance team, what impressed me the most is how intense it looked the landing on water. You could feel every small wave and the drag of the water under the hull.
Really brings back memories. As a kid I rode on the Catalina Seaplanes between San Pedro and Avalon many, many times. Fell in love with the Grumman Goose as a kid.
I remember the Goose being used on TV for the show, "Tales of the Golden Monkey" and the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, "Commando". I've always loved the overhead throttles. This one is IMMACULATE!
This brings back childhood memories, listening to those engines and watching the water against the fuselage on take off and landing in the Caribbean, island hopping from St.Thomas to St.Croix.
At first I was like "Oh, what an absolutely beautiful plane!" ... Then the video went into the interior and I was like "Oh my god, she's Gorgeous!" Then you gave us the cockpit view.... "Your plane is absolutely STUNNING!!" The engine sounds incredible. What an incredible plane! Thanks for sharing her with us! :O
Thank you for this video- when I was in my late teens my parents had a Goose, called Constance, I have a lot of very very happy memories refreshed, and can almost smell that lovely petrolly, oily, hot metal smell, and the hollow tapping slapping noise of the waves when we were tied up out on the islands.
Brought back great memories....... I was a ramp agent for Air Catalina in the early 70s. Spent countless hours in the Gooses. It was great to hear one again. Thanks!
I remember watching these planes fly in from the USVI to San Juan, PR and we used to park right next to the ramp….. hearing the roar of the engines as it taxied from the sea to the land was incredible. This propelled my love for aviation at 11 years old. At the age of 15 my parents sent me to military school where they had aviation training and I got my pilot’s license.
I live in Lake Macquarie, an area on the eastern seaboard of Australia about an hour north of Sydney. We have an airbase (Rathmines) that was built during WWII for seaplanes - namely the Catalina. These were flown in and out of here for most of the war in defense of Australia and in support of troups in places such as New Guinea. Each year they hold a festival in honour of the planes and pilots. It's fantastic event which draws a large crowd. Unfortunately most of the Catalinas that we have left are not flown much due to age. So we don't get to see them as often as we used to. These are my all time favourite plane.
A lot of times I will let a video on RU-vid just run in the background while I do something else or I will skill around a video that I feel is dull or long winded or poorly edited. This was something different though, something truly worth watching from beginning to end without distractions. People talk about the toys they would buy if they won the lottery and this jus showed me that this would be much higher on my list than any Ferrari or other super car. What a life it would be to run charters with this somewhere in the South Pacific.... what a wonderful dream...
Ive always found those sea planes really cool looking.nothing sounds better than a prop cutting thru air and having a front row seat seeing the engines fire up and prop spinning would be a joy to see.
I lived on St.Croix as a kid in the 70s. Antilles Airboats flew several Gooses (Geese??). I would hear them take off all day long as they flew back and forth to S.John and St. Thomas. I only took one round trip ona Goose and will never forget it!.
LOL...I can't resist..."Hey Corky, tell Sarah and Jack to get in their seats. We're taking a load of Louies' best champagne to Taga Tiya today." There's a relevant pop culture reference for ya. Seriously though---this airplane looks cherry! Those engines sound smooth as silk, and it looks like it was a completely awesome day. Thumbs-up man! :)
My Grandfather who raised me was the primary test pilot for the Goose at Grumman. If he were here I know that he would be quite proud of the pre-flight attention and the safe piloting of this beautiful machine. The Goose along with the Mallard were his favorites. Thank you for this video.
Beautiful aircraft, and so beautifully restored!! Thanks for taking us along I won a flight on one, as a kid in the late 60's, in Anchorage, AK. I was owned and operated by the Park Service, and they took a handful of us kids who'd won a ride, over to Kenai to some sort of wildlife area and back. The air was rough and I was blowing chow (in a bag). I still have photos of the plane, in black and white, taken on an old "brownie" camera.
Thank you for posting such a breathtaking video! The plane is unbelievably beautiful. Such a rare experience, makes me feel like I was there . Thanks guys! RU-vid surprised me in a wonderful way today
Ever since I was a kid playing Microsoft Flight Simulator X, my dream plane has been the Grumman Goose. Really cool to see it flying and landing in the water.
What a beauty, thanks for letting me come along way cool 😎 aeroplane, definitely a bucket list plane to experience but not too many left I don't imagine.
We fly in & out of coastal communities, & fishing camps on the coast of BC, in the Goose, & other small float planes. Have had a few trips in the Goose. It’s a great aircraft! Thanks for sharing!
I’m only 4 mins in and I just had to comment. I love the way these mechanical controls work. You actually feel everything as opposed to electronics. I’ve never flown by wire so I can’t really say much to the tactile sensory perception of it but there’s something central about feeling exactly what’s at the end of the blade. Excited to watch the rest
If I saw this flying over my house I would be overwhelmed with joy. Do I want to fly one or want to own one? No never. But to see someone with balls and a wallet that big.. huge respect.
VERY Expensive hobby!....and Dangerous......I worked at a private Jet Center...I've seen the bills....and I've seen them Crash at our airport many times!!!....... People don't understand the strict Maintenance that has to be done, even if you're not flying it. Many of these WW2 aircraft are not safe and were designed for short missions, so short maintenance cycles, they were designed to Run hard and Fast, so maintenance is critical. Some aircraft were safe and more reliable than others too. But it's a fun hobby if you can afford it, or are Connected to the right people. Awesome video.
apparently my dad flew on this when it was owned in washington from the late 70s to early 80s, he was very excited to see this bird flying again, still looks the same aswell apparently
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet. Wish I could join you guys out there, what a beautiful plane and a great time all around. This is just a perfect day caught on camera.
Excellent video of a beautiful airplane. There can't be too many planes with such enormous side windows along the cabin! The DeHavilland Comet put an end to big square windows.
Hello from a Amazon pilot in Brazil, here we got a lot of caravans to do the work. They are good for sure, but Goose is a Goose. Thanks for the images, thanks for the original sound and noises.
That looks exactly like my old late friend and Bosses old Goose! Same paint, Robert “Swage” Richardson, if it is his he let me fly that around but mostly his 1942 Howard DGA-15 in the mid later 70s when I was a kid! I worked at University Swaging Ballard! That has to be Bobs old Goose with that pimped out interior, His Howard was Suede inside
What a great video on The Grumman Goose ! Loved watching The Tales of the Gold Monkey TV Show , Starring Stephen Collins . What an exciting Goose you have there !
