Flying Blind - Why VFR Pilots Get in Trouble in the Clouds

Matt Gunderson here with PrecisionAire Aviation, sitting right seat next to Martin Pauly in his famous A36 Bonanza. Martin is an extremely high time, experienced, and skilled pilot - yet in this video, we'll demonstrate just how quickly any pilot, no matter how skilled, can get into an ususual attitude by flying "seat of the pants", or in other words, not trusting their instruments.
While VFR pilots flying into IMC are especially susceptible to this risk, even skilled instrument rated pilots are not immune to unusual attitudes and lost situational awareness when workloads are high or instruments fail.

Eyes closed is not the same as flying in white out. In a white out, you can still look at your instruments and see whether you are turning, or going up or going down. In IMC, looking out the window is useless, look at the dials.

Well that is an excellent video. You have proven one of the eternal truths that was taught to me by a retired United Airlines 757 captain. He said flying is easy. If you want to go up you pull back. If you want to go down U pull back harder. I love your channel Martin.

God I wish Kobe’s pilots would have trusted his instruments, I still don’t understand the rapid decent of the helicopter
@texgarcia1958

The same sort of thing happens. The difference is with a fixed-wing aircraft you set trim. trim is basically small adjustments to Parts on the wing that makes the plane fly straight and level. Some of it us refer to it as a poor man's auto. Basically a properly trimmed aircraft will remain relatively level provided speed and wind does not change. The difference with a helicopter is there is no such trim. The minute he could not see he started relying on seat of your pants. Unfortunately this is a trick on your ears. Look up a video called 176 seconds to live.

lly g You’re saying that Kobe’s pilot wasn’t trained on his instruments? What? No offense, but your comment is by far the dumbest comment I’ve ever read throughout this whole ordeal. You do realize that this is the first thing pilot’s learn, like in training? Kobe’s pilot had flown for over 20 years, was an instructor, and had over 8,250 hours on that particular aircraft.

Even if you can't see outside, all you have to do is keep a close eye on the attitude indicator to ensure the aircraft is flying correctly, right? If yes, then you have to wonder how pilots get into death spirals.
@precisionaireaviation8970
@precisionaireaviation8970 3 года назад
In theory yes it’s that simple. But the brain can play tricks on us - especially in stressful high workload situations - that make us want to ignore data and trust our “gut”. Also what happens if the attitude indicator accuracy is in doubt (whether real or perceived), or other indications contradict what the attitude indicator is showing? This is why instrument training and unusual attitude recovery is so important.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 3 года назад
@@precisionaireaviation8970 So when flying at night over areas of land with no lights, during the day in overcast conditions, or over the ocean at night, people need to be trained to ignore your "gut", and look at the attitude indicator. That's what I'd do. I know it may sound simpler than in reality. Great video BTW.
@onddu2254
@onddu2254 3 года назад
Technically yes, but it usually feels odd when you can't see outside. Even though all the indicators show that you are going straight, it might feel like you are turning to your side.
@electronicsNmore
@electronicsNmore 3 года назад
@@onddu2254 You need to ignore how you feel and go by the instruments. I'd carry a section of string, a suction cup and a lead bottom sinker. If in doubt,just look at the orientation of the string hanging down from the center of the cockpit ceiling.
@igclapp
@igclapp Год назад
@@electronicsNmore That won't work. You could be in a coordinated 60 degree bank and the weight will be pointing straight at the floor. You have to use an instrument that is gyroscope-based.

Design helicopters to perform better in clouds/fog. Or ban their use in that scenario. Why did Kobe's pilot climb higher knowing he was getting into the clouds and potential spatial disorientation? Seems pilots need to be trained NOT to fly into the clouds whatsoever if it is that great a risk. Obviously ATC did not help at all or fast enough when he entered 2300 feet.
@prom8332
@prom8332 4 года назад
He was blinded by a fog wall that was thick as milk and pulled up to TRY to avoid the hills you dote. While doing so he wasnt level and entered a graveyard spiral. Any Helicopter pilot would have been lucky to get out of that situation. He had no business flying that day but the pressure of getting his clients there got to him.
@davida1251
@davida1251 4 года назад
@@prom8332 and that's my point. Pilots shouldn't be looking into the fog to try to ascertain where they are at. They can't see the ground at that point, so why try to "guess" where you are at. Look at the instruments to determine if you are flying straight/upright and confirm your altitude and pitch. They minute pilots go by their senses they are doomed.
@flyingchris81
@flyingchris81 2 года назад
I don’t see the point of this demonstration. I mean why is this an eye opener to VFR pilots. VFR doesn’t mean, that you not using instruments. VFR doesn’t mean that you are blind in IMC. Do that experiment with an IFR pilot. I bet it’s the same outcome. IFR doesn’t mean flying by your senses either.
@igclapp
@igclapp Год назад
The point of the video is to drive home the fact that you cannot rely on your senses alone to fly a plane in IMC. It's aimed towards VFR pilots who might accidentally enter IMC and then think they can keep flying the plane without looking at the instruments.
@flyingchris81
@flyingchris81 Год назад
@@igclapp I completely understand and I agree. Almost every VFR pilot is doomed after a few minutes when flying into IMC without proper instrument training. My point is, blind folding the pilot to show that, doesn’t explain the problem. A normal seeing human is not able to walk 100m straight with closed eyes. And that should be obvious for almost everybody. To show the effect just fly into IMC with a VFR pilot. I mean being 100% blind instantly is just something different then being completely confused by your instruments and not trusting them.
