When I heard the Flite Test guys were going to be in Salt Lake linking up with the Shonduras crew, I decided it would be a perfect time to go link up with them as well as the Flying Cowboys to do a little flying. High elevation strips, rivers and deep canyons made for some awesome bush flying!

I always thought of bush flying as a necessity in remote places like Alaska, I didn't know that it was a sport or hobby. It's about the coolest thing I've ever seen.
@TrentonPalmer
@TrentonPalmer 6 лет назад
Yeah, it’s not just people lugging hunters around in AK, us lower 48 guys like to have some fun in them! (The AK guys do too, at some point I need to make the trek up there to fly with some of them)

Chuck I owned one for a year or so. Nice model 4 with glass panel. Go with a 7 super sport, you won't regret it, as soon as I settle down I'm gonna be building my next kitfox
@ParadigmUnkn0wn
@ParadigmUnkn0wn 2 года назад
@@msc6227 if you can afford to get your PPL and build 500 hours (which would be rather cheap in a Kitfox) there's aerial survey/mapping companies that'll hire you and you can build hundreds of hours per year. Once you build the hours there you can get an ATP and step up into regional airlines, then someday possibly make it at a major airline. The problem is: - You need around $80k and 2 to 3 years to build 500 hours. It could be done in less, but you have to be rich enough to afford not working full-time. - You need at least another 3 to 4 years to hit 2500. During that time you'll be making rather mediocre pay (~$40k/year) - From there you'll end up as a first officer making $40k to $80k for the next 5 to 12 years. - Finally, after 10 to 20 years, you make Captain! Even if you started when you were 20, you'll likely be pushing 40. Good luck keeping that First Class Medical. Any number of otherwise mundane health problems could derail your entire career. Literally an entire life's work, everything you did to get to that point, can be lost overnight. I'm not saying it's unrealistic, in fact I provided a little known option (i.e. aerial survey/mapping) as an option to make money and build hours super fast. It's not impossible, just go into it understanding that you won't start out with a six figure salary and despite your best efforts it can all be for nothing if you simply get unlucky. Just be sure that it's what you **really** want, and have a backup plan/exit strategy that won't leave you financially ruined if things don't work out. I hope that someday I have the privilege of flying on a plane you're the Captain of and wish you the best.

Excellent video like all of your videos. I enjoy this one specially because I live in Utah and fly PPCs with my friends and my goal is to one day have a Kitfox plane. I checked the flying cowboys website and that is a very exclusive group with very high requirements to get in so they will only invite people like you. One of the neatest thing in aviation is the camaraderie, friendship and knowledge transfer from the experts down. That might be why we enjoy your videos so much, we feel all of that in each video that you make, that you almost do it for us. Have a wonderful 2018 and who knows we may meet up in the air one day...

Spoke with Rob Rollison at Aerotrek and figured out aircraft setup, Rob just does not have any planes. I mentioned Mark Pringle at West Desert Airpark and Rob suggested to speak with him. Forty five minutes later I was out there. Mark has a Rans S-6 ES with tundra tires he is selling and I'm making the plunge. It is a trike gear plane that can still get into many places. Will train to fly in my own plane. Always put this off because of 52 years with type 1 diabetes but my control is good enough I can do this...and be safe. This will be a dream come true.

For a couple years at least I've been wrestling with the inherent tradeoffs/contradictions in the list of characteristics I want in the airplane I'm planning to buy. Frankly, ever since I started to solo after the first 20 hours of flight training, most of my flying has been super low and slow over wild, crazy, remote geology... and landing at "impossible" places along ridgelines, short stretches of 4WD/backroads and other crazy places (like emergency strips where they dump forest fire fighters). One of the more memorable and hairy ones was over 11,000 feet not that far from Mount Whitney. Almost all my trips were in Cessna 152s that I rented where I took my flight training at the Monterey airport. I obviously didn't realize there was significant risk of denting up the airplane body (or prop) with flying pebbles, or I might not have been so bold. Frankly, teaching myself to fly/land/takeoff super low and slow... and in insane places subject to unpredictable gusts and such seemed infinitely more risky than flying pebbles. Though eventually I had done so much of this kind of flying that landing in a tiny fraction of the usual stretch of non-runway became totally second nature. Obviously all the above is totally consistent with the *Trent Palmer* and *Flying Cowboys* type of flying in these videos. *BUT* that's not the only kind of flying I'm interested in now that the lightweight (650 pound) carbon fiber pipistrel virus sw 912iS with extreme range tanks can fly 6500km without refueling (because it gets up to 75mpg at economy speed (220kph~240kph) coupled with the extra large fuel tanks in the wings). This means now a dinky little 2-seat private airplane can fly from California to Hawaii... or what I'm more interested in... from Chile across the entire south pacific ocean to NZ and AU and beyond (with 1 or 2 stops along the way to refuel). The key point is, there are stretches of about 4000km without islands with fuel (or people), or in one case, without any land at all. Furthermore, I'm interested in landing on top of all sorts of 17,000 to 21,000 foot altitude mountaintops and ridges in the Atacama Andes (south Peru, north Chile, southeast Bolivia, northern Argentina). The opportunities there are beyond belief, but so far I've only "been there done that" on foot, not in a small airplane. And so, I've been struggling to figure out how to make the pipistrel do everything I want. The default configuration is tailwheel, but I prefer trike for the obvious reasons (even beyond "that's what I know"). But monster wheels and tires are totally insane for flying 4000km "hops" across the pacific, because it wastes massive amounts of fuel for no benefits (on those trips). I'm not sure how much weight to give the warnings Trent gave about carbon fiber bodies... after all the "carbon cub" seems to have become quite popular for bush flying. At least that's the impression I get... perhaps wrongly? *And so I wonder, maybe the wise answer is... TWO AIRPLANES.* Maybe the same kind of Kitfox as Trent, except with 912iS engine... and the pipistrel virus sw with 912iS engine like I described. That way everything I learn about the 912iS engine benefits me on both airplanes, and all the spare parts that I keep around will work on either airplane. Maybe adopting the same instrumentation and other gizmos and accessories for both works too. After all, they're both gonna be classified as *experimental* aircraft, so I guess pretty much "anything goes". I assume. But, to make this work financially, I'd have to share the cost (and ownership) of the Kitfox with at least one other pilot... presumably someone in [southern] Utah or [northern] Arizona or maybe nearby parts of Nevada, Colorado, NewMexico. I'm quite sure the pipistrel will be fine for less than extreme bush flying, cuz it lands and takes-off on a dime like the great bush planes the Flying Cowboys zoom around in. Where it would be problematic is landing where the tires might smack into jagged rocks or remnants of tree stumps and limbs. And, of course, it would need to avoid landing on soft or mushy surfaces like wet sand and such. And so... that's why I'd fly the pipistrel to wherever my partner is, and steal the Kitfox (or whatever) to go raise hell on the riverbeds or ridge-lines or other crazy places. So... is anyone in this neck of the woods interested in creating a 2 or 3 or 4 way partnership on a bush plane? If so, let me know in a reply, or find my email or skype information in one of my other posts under this video (posted about 7 months before this message). I'd also consider a partnership on the pipistrel virus sw 912iS, but that might be a bit more difficult to make work... depending on how often you want to fly, and where you are. While northern Chile or anywhere in the Atacama Andes would work great for a partnership on this pipistrel airplane, anyone elsewhere would need to understand that the airplane will go away for weeks or perhaps even months to far flung places in the southern hemisphere from time to time. Of course, you could come along and share the flying if wild, crazy trips like these appeal to your sense of adventure and "insanity"! :-)

Holy smokes, I just found some media from my trip to Spanish Forks back in 2012 when I visited Mike Burton with AirGyro. Beautiful out there !

One of the best videos I've seen! I had a smile on my face the entire time. The geek/nerd in me has to give a shout out to the dude sporting a Mass Effect hoodie at 11:08 !

Thank you for making this video. Thank you for re inspiring me. Thank you for sharing aviation in such an amazing light. I’m subscribed and will be following close. Some time ago I stopped Pershing my pilots license because I was turned off by the FAA and it’s regulations as well as the cost. I still go out and take opportunities to ride as often as I can but this has re ignited my fire to become a pilot myself.

Is that truck stop the one in Green River on the west side of town? This is the best video you have published, and I still haven't watched the whole thing! After I hit "comment", I am headed back for more.
