"Unfortunately for these flying fish, they took to the skies to escape predators from the water only to land in the beaks of predators in the air." Ah yes, the basic tenet of subsistence being the revolving door of measures and countermeasures.
Excellent choice guys! I did not know that Flying Fish were that beautiful. When we went on a cruise from Tampa to The Cayman Islands & Mexico, there were so many Flying Fish to see. They were like little dolphins jumping in and out of the water right beside the ship. It was def a spectacular thing to see! Thank u to both of you for this excellent episode!
When I was on my honeymoon in Mexico we went swimming with whale sharks and mantas. We saw hundreds of flying fish on the boat ride out flying out of the water as our boat passed.
Very strange strategy, I assume that if there are no birds nearby their strategy works nicely. If they make enough of a scene though and birds are attracted then their strategy sort of falls apart. That said a bird will likely eat alot less fish than a larger ocean predator so hopefully their belly's will fill before they eat the specific fish.
There also exist flying squid which behave much like flying fish, only they propel themselves out of the water with their siphons, basically like tiny winged water rockets. Maybe inspiration for a future video?
Wow! I learned so much about flying fish! I had no idea they used their tail to also help them out of the water! I also was super intrigued by the other videos you talked about briefly, so I got a list of videos to watch now! Thanks for the video!
