Walden (33V) to Longmont (KLMO) on a WINDY day

Join us as we traverse the Continental Divide on a blustery afternoon. Winds aloft are 45-50 knots between 12,000 and 15,000. We'll discuss mountain flying tactics and how to use the air currents to your advantage. After crossing the Divide we're met with some turbulent air and finish things off with an impromptu landing contest in Longmont ;)

Ah, my favorite airplane - an early Mooney with manual gear. Back in the day I flew one coast to coast several times, all over East of the Mississippi and even to the Caribbean a few times.

What irks a Canadian pilot transiting down there are radio calls that don't use the airport name that is on the charts. In this case I'd be calling up Vance Brand; and I'm hearing pilots talking about Longmont and since I don't see Longmont airport on the VFR charts I'm thinking it is a common frequency also used in a completely different location, hence I don't have to worry about them. Recently flew into Hudson Valley Reg'al, KPOU, Poughkeepsie, NY... listening on the radio for any of those names. But the controller comes up identifying himself as Dutchess County. JEEZ. What gives down there, guys??

Loved the video and have spent a tremendous amount of time in all the terrain you were flying in around Walden, Delaney Buttes, Pouder river Canyon, Loveland, etc... I am not an aviator but I really admire your attention to detail flying the mountains, and the "danger" or "comfort" of flying those updraft/ downdrafts with a passenger.

@@ManandaMooney my grown daughter just moved to Aurora. I have a Rockwell Commander 112TCA I bought 1.5 years ago and plan on doing lots of xcountry traveling. It really helps to see you fly around Colorado in the mountains. Can’t wait to see you fly into that private strip in Marble!!!

This is a good one too. I've got a C model that is pretty new to me --most of my flying has been rotorwing so far. So i've been going through your videos and enjoying them. One request would be to see you just do an audible walk through of your whole approach and landing. You almost did it on this one, but it would be super interesting to hear your thoughts all the way to the ground sometime. Thanks for the videos!

If I ever buy my own plane a Mooney is it. Values are certainly going to go up in the future because the company is out of business and they are very desirable AC for GA pilots.

As a fellow Mooney driver, I just found your channel and I'm loving it. Have you considered getting the GTP 59 outside air temperature for the G5? It gives you true airspeed and direction right there on the face of the G5. I really love this information being immediately available.

I think the GoPro has image stabilization which smooths out the video. Good info for this Florida pilot.
@ManandaMooney
@ManandaMooney 4 года назад
Yes it does. It's a catch-22. On one hand, it provides motion to the cabin as it focuses on the horizon. On the other, it really smooths out the bumps so they don't look all that bad. Hopefully my arms flailing in the seat tip you off ;)

@chrisruf7590
@chrisruf7590 3 года назад
Why not join the traffic pattern so you are sequenced and easily found by others?
@ManandaMooney
@ManandaMooney 3 года назад
Good question Chris. Longmont is THE airport for skydiving in the Denver area. Even the ATIS requests pilots to avoid overflights. Most of us local pilots avoid flying over the field just out of habit. When coming in from the south, it’s a no brainer but, joining the pattern from the north, it was easier to fly a long right base to a straight-in (traffic permitting of course).
@chrisruf7590
@chrisruf7590 3 года назад
@@ManandaMooney ok, so maybe you are not all bad 😉. I guess being found in the pattern would be by a parachuter. Great videos. I'm a glider pilot so I appreciate how well you understand the winds. Are you familiar with how gliders fly mountain wave for hundreds of miles and >40,000msl?
@MorganBrown
@MorganBrown 4 года назад
What route would you take to Steamboat from Longmont?
@ManandaMooney
@ManandaMooney 4 года назад
It really depends on the winds and flight rules. In light-winds and VFR my first choice is KLMO, Rollins Pass, Kremmling, Rabbit Ears Pass, KSBS. You don't have to climb very high and it keeps you over the road most of the way. If the winds aloft are strong or you need to go IFR try: KLMO.WISER.V4.LAR.V524.HAHNS.KSBS. The MEA isn't too bad along that route and the mountain wave is less pronounced.
@cenmarr
@cenmarr 4 года назад
@@ManandaMooney Strongly second your advice having used those routes many times in the early '90s. Morgan Brown, please heed M&M'S wind advise, there is some spectacular rotor turbulence behind Rollins and Rabbit ears passes. Please research crashes in those areas, and proceed accordingly.

You are good at making videos. But it is clear you are totally inexperienced mountain pilot
@ManandaMooney
@ManandaMooney 3 года назад
Ron, I’m not a CFI and I don’t pretend to be one. In my videos I’m quite candid about my experience - I’ve been flying for a little over 16 years, 6 of which have been in the mountains of Colorado. That doesn’t make me “totally inexperienced”. Part of what you’re interpreting is likely my feeble attempt at making content digestible to persons with little mountain experience. The recommendations I offer are conservative and serve as a starting place for the many pilots that keep killing themselves in Colorado year over year. If I can prevent one pilot from making a bad decision, this channel will have been worth it. I don’t advertise on this channel, I haven’t enabled monetization. This strictly serves as a platform for me to share my experience and connect with fellow aviators. I’d love to hear what you have contributed to the aviation community other than poorly articulated comments on RU-vid.
