I fly to the mines all the time on these planes and love them. I'm 196cm (6ft 6) and still have leg room. Less bumpiness in the cabin when you go through turbulence or just the pilots making great moves to get out of town 😝
Really enjoyable! Interesting details about the wing. I love how you're bringing your avgeekery nerdiness from your tour videos into your trip reports!
In the Netherlands there was a TV series called "Vliegende Hollanders" (flying dutchmen). The series is about Anthony Fokker and Albert Plesman, two aviation pioneers who stood at the cradle of civil aviation in the Netherlands. As an aviation nerd you probably like it
I have only ever travelled on an F100 once which was on SR from CPH to GVA in 1989. Believe it or not this small aircraft was configured in a 3 class configuration, FCY. Fixed size 8 seat F cabin 2 X 2 seating, flexible divider 'Euro business' concept with 2 X 3 seating in C and Y. Flying on this type of aircraft would be a similar experience to flying on the BAC-1-11 or DC9 (have travelled a lot on both of these types). I like the 2 X 3 seating. Good for low noise levels but not so good in terns of noise for those unfortunate enough to be seated at the very back of the cabin near to the engines. Seats on this aircraft look comfortable; well padded with good legroom.
The spoilers flip up at the front of the wing at landing. This is to break aerodynamic lift to help the plane land. Plane wings overall have an astonishing range of functions.
Really enjoyed watching this video, it was very informative from start to finish. Never flown on a Fokker 100 but on a 717 in 2019 to Kalgoorlie, another great video in my home state of Western Australia.
I did my first solo at Kalgoorlie in VH-KGA, a C172 back in 1979. 40 years later when I once again touched down there after flying my Glasair from Canberra, they'd moved the terminal from over the other side of the field and things looked a lot more schmick. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Excellent video, well researched commentary too. Back in the 80s, I worked on both the F27 Friendship and F28 Fellowship as cabin crew. Both were amazing to work on, very reliable, and popular with passengers and us crew alike, especially the F28.
The Fokker 100, successful aircraft that crashed the company who made it. Difficult to compete with MD95 / Boeing 717 and many other aircraft in that market segment. As for the roo's paws missing, what's next the head? That's the problem when you keep cutting back at what was once an amazing company.
nice video. i worked for several years as an groundengineer on the f28/f70/f100 and f50, great planes to work on. Interesting fact is that with speedbrakes extended (complete rear most part of the tail) it was one of the few aircraft being able to fly the steep approach into londen city airport. The two most inboard liftdumpers extend less far to avoid disturbing the airflow into the engines.
I never got the chance to fly on the F-100 when they were flown in the States by USAir and American, but I did fly on the F-28 when they were in the fleet of Piedmont Airlines. I remember flying from Key West to Miami and the crew was all excited because the founder of the airline, Thomas Henry Davis was on the flight. The cockpit played music through the intercom and the crew had a drink service on this very short flight. I could tell he was much loved by the crew members!
nice to come across this flight - I fly on a Virgin F100 to and from work each Friday, With Virgin we have access to wifi entertainment via our handheld devices, Yes love the leg room on the Fokker much better than other planes Apparently, we are losing the Fokker by the 1st quarter of 2023,
The plane look really clean and shiny..you some how know its going to be well maintained well done you and the airline that operates it..tho it would be nice to see the cockpit for flight sim nerds like me
Hey mate, nah getting into the cockpit is difficult these days as the crew is busy. Check out my channel for my tour through a B-52 and 747 which does include the cockpit, though. :)
Hi Paul. Great video. Thanks for the technical information about the wing. I flew on an Alliance Fokker 100 from BNE - MKY back in 2014. I was actually pleasantly surprised about what I thought might be a significant increase in noise at the rear of the aircraft.
The information about the icing on the wing is so true. Close family of my mother died in crash that happened in 1993 including Fokker 100. The plane crashed on lift off due to icing on the wings. The flight is Palair flight 301.
Great video as usual Paul. I didn't realise how the word "Fokker" was pronounced until what you said at 1:51, :-). I always pronounce it as "Fork-ker." But the way you pronounce it is correct in the Dutch language (I checked on pronunciation website called 'Forvo') Anyway, look forward to seeing your next video.
Gave this video a thumbs up straight away just because you seem a decent human being. Secondly though, who needs ife on a flight like that unless it's in darkness. Your ife is called the window. Australia looks absolutely stunning. These videos of yours are seriously making me want to go to Oz
@@PaulStewartAviation When you said about the little fokker I had a little chuckle but I do remember you saying it before. I'll never see you first thing in the morning Paul, not unless you've used rohypnol. 🤣
I personally think the Fokker 100 is a great plane, it kinda looks like a MD 82 but advanced! Good video! Thanks for adding chapter markers since I want to get straight to point!😃🛩
cheers mate. Yep I wish I had discovered the chapter markers before now. Nah travel is safe inside WA but I would be careful travelling in QLD, NSW or VIC at the moment.
Fantastic video. I knew about the flaps and the stall fences, but did not understand the purpose of the black stripe. I’ve flown on the KLM Fokker 100 and loved its retro look. It really has a very solid and sturdy feel. I thought it was interesting that in the sped-up video of the landing there is virtually no wing flex. And that is exactly how it feels.
Landing in Perth van sometimes be interesting if plane gets hit with one of the wind shears I think they are called. Been on a A330 that got hit as we touched down. Whole plane felt like it went side ways. So many people were screaming. Was pretty scary if I'm honest.
Thank you, Paul, for sharing your awesome video and all the information with us. Watching out of the window seeing the engine, the wing and the beautiful landscape of Australia - awesome.
Another nice little flight. Such a beautiful landscape out there... didn't realise how many smaller open cut mines there are that are dotted around Kalgoorlie. I don't mind this aircraft, it has a nice clean look about it, especially with the engines mounted to the rear. Thanks Paul.
I flew on a number of F-27s while living in the Netherlands and Luxembourg and on one trip chose a different routing so I could experience the F-28. Yes, a nice aircraft that competed well with the similar BAC 1-11. I didn't try out the Fokker 100s, though I did sample the Fokker 50 a couple of times.
@@PaulStewartAviation cool. Check it out when you can. Not sure if they are still allowing it , but when I did a tour you got to go inside one of the aircraft and tour it . Outmost respect for the RFDS crews, such a tiny workspace to be saving lives in.
They're a great aircraft, a little rocket and very smooth. I've done many F100 (and F70) flights (up to 3.5 hrs) in Nth QLD also BNE - ASP, they're easily in my top 5 aircraft along with the B747-400, 767-300, 717-200. They sound really cool when those RR engines spool up too.
Loved it Paul! Brings back the memories, I was on the last KLM F70 flight from AMS-LHR in October 2017, I will hopefully be able to add this flight when I come to AUZ in '22!
Being the 'flap fan' that I am, I LOVE that they have the degree markings on the wing!!! I could watch that the entire flight, lol. BTW I really enjoy all your trip reports. Interesting, informative, good amount of avgeekiness (I'm one after all, haha) and snippets of casual humour. Keep up the great work Paul.
A few years ago i booked a "redEdeal" on one of these... aka: The cheapest Qantas ticket... and as they do, they sent me the "you can pre-check-in now" message the night before. To my surprise, seat 1E was available to select... which i did. So I get there the next day to find that the front row, (and second row too, i think,) was actually first class, with both 1B and 1D being dedicated drink tray seats... and the passengers in 1A and 1C were clearly being waited on like First Class... and then there was me.... in the window seat... with more leg room than i could use... seriously, i tried to touch the wall panel in front of me with outstretched legs... couldn't. (Granted, i am only 5'6"... but still.) And to top it all off, we had the Americans in town for military exercises, (Rockhampton,) and they had the C5 parked right out my window. Aside from the two seats in the cockpit, i legit had the best seat that day... and paid less than anyone.... For the win 👍
Unfortunately l have never flown on one of Fokkers small jets but many many flights on the F27 out of Melbourne to Wynyard in Tasmania to visit family quite a few times a year back in the 1970’s and l reckon you could not beat those large panoramic windows together with the high wing as the view was second to none, l always booked a seat under the wing as l loved to watch the large landing gear legs retract and lower! I am pretty sure they were pneaumaticaly operated and l remember on both Ansett or TAA as l changed between both of them back in the 2 airline policy days, nearly all the flights l was on the pilots used to leave the cockpit door open and l loved watching them advance and rested those throttles on those Rolls Royce Darts as they were a centrifugal compressors engine they were throttleable unlike say the constant speed units of Allison’s on the Electras etc man there is no mistaking that wonderful ear piercing whine of a dart and remember it powered a vast array of aircraft and remember well all those Viscounts and watching IPECS Armstrong Whitworth Argosy 4 engine Dart powered freighters taking off and landing at Essendon Airport many years ago, good memories indeed.👍
Nice little aircraft. My all time favourite aeroplane is the F27 the nearest country to Australia still carring passengers is Indonesia I have flowen many times from Bali to lombok. The sound of the engines of the F100 on take off reminds me of the DC10 Nice video once again Paul. Welcome back to Perth ✈️
Flew this route so many times, we got board with the same food, so decided to change our dietary requirements so we could experience the differences. Interestingly it was the basically the same food but certain things removed or added
Great video Paul as always. Hopefully will be able to fly one in a few years when Australia opens back up. Was also hoping to fly the F50 but the only airline I know that was still flying that plane was Air Antwerp but they have shut down.
As usual Paul a thoroughly informative & interesting video . I’m going to take the opportunity fly in a Fokker 100 as soon as I am able ..The Qantas Lounge seemed similiar to the Coffs Harbour lounge with addition of an outside area .. thanks again
Nicely filmed Paul, liked the various wing feature descriptions. I’ve often thought the rear engine design made sense, especially for a quieter ride if up front. I wonder if it’s not as favoured now because of maintenance access? The size of Kalgoorlie Airport surprised me too...that’s the mining industry for sure...
Great Work Paul!, I suppose Kalgoorlie would have a few flights a day probably mostly for the people that work at the mine. Fokker 100 is unique aircraft too. For some reason I prefer the old livery
