@@thelonesculler Maybe it could keep Paul going for a couple of years. Though, he might not want to go to the least used airport in the Democratic of Congo or North Korea.
The honesty ends when you try and claim compensation when you're entitled to it, lol. I have an inbox full of nightmares dealing with KLM as they're also the main airline for my local airport.
I really like KLM service and staff. They were fantastic when I broke my leg abroad (it's OK it is an artificial leg but I could not walk!) the staff and crew couldn't do enough to make travelling easy for me on my long haul flight from Central America. I will go out of my way to use KLM whenever I can.
@@nicholasmackenzie-rowe68 my limb centre saw me the following day and fixed it within 5 minutes!! All it needed was 3.5mm Allen key, if I had known I could have fixed it myself!
Noice. Meanwhile the first time me and mother went to America by ourselves (me nearly 18 though I didn't look it because dwarfism and her elderly and disabled in a wheelchair, I know there's a massive age gap lol) Heathrow saw my mother in the wheelchair, took her to the START of the tunnel you take from the boarding area to the plane, and told her to walk the rest of the way. That's a 2/3 minute walk for me and I can stand if I need to in a queue. That's a marathon for her hanging onto me and shuffling her feet and going quite slowly and she CANNOT just stand even clinging onto me like a disabled eagle because it hurts her and they expected her to just get up from her wheelchair and walk, not even letting me push her to the door. They haven't dared do this since because she yelled at them so much. Not like tiny dwarfish me could have carried her AND our carry on bags. Eventually they moved the wheelchair to the door, and now we travel with her own personal wheelchair, which people have since attempted to make off with despite it not looking anything like an airport wheelchair. I have had to run to the rescue. This was a decade ago, btw.
The airport was close to being sold for housing, the local MP is part of saving it and changing the name back to Teesside from Durham-Tees Valley. I remember flying to Ibiza from hear many years ago!
Perhaps it should be named "Darlington-Teesside" due to it's proximity to The large town of the same name..."Durham-Tees Valley" I thought was a misleading name anyway as that suggested it was next to Durham (City) which it definitely isn't!...I'm pleased to see more flights coming there, as it was indeed at risk of closure due to being underused...I'd like to see the old London connection back, like in the old days with British Midland (later BMI)
@rando01 I bet you know the last leader of the Darlington Council. He was the one who wanted Teeside Airport knocked down and housing built on it. Well, the North East needs links. We can now fly to London, Spain, Belfast, and Dublin.
I really love the design of KLMs "stuff" on the meal service. Beautifully designed box for the KLM Cityhopper flight, the blue design on the tea mugs, the engraving on the knives and forks, and the unusual shape to the glassware.
Before I retired flew with KLM just about every month for 10 years. Always found the cabin crew really pleasant and always helpful when the inevitable delays happen. Once arrived back in Amsterdam from Shanghai very late and missed my last flight back to Manchester. Just before landing the purser told me that a hotel room was already booked for me.
When I flew to Panama City with klm we had to divert to Colombia and the crew never mentioned it so the cabin was in absolute chaos as the route map showed a different destination.. we then spent an hour in colombia till we flew to Panama and during the whole time they never informed us anything.. We the missed our connection to Quito and were late 24h.. During this trip i lost my luggage and KLM never found it :-(
Got a real big twinge of nostalgia from this one. Thank you. I was taken back to my days with the airline (1966-1998) and how things were handled during an IROP. Teeside reminded me of one of the first terminals I worked in - it was a repurposed Air Force field building. And it seemed the attitude of the people at KLM was the “old ways” and not the impersonal service we tend to get today. Again many thanks.
Yes it is a long lonely walk to the terminal building, years ago there used to be a small shuttle bus , but do not think that exists today, so a long walk especially if you have suitcases, but still fond memories of the place
The walkway in front op the lounge wil be gone when Schiphol finish the upgrade of the terminal. Then you will have great views of the appron. It makes me proud to see the KLM crew do the best they can. Dutch mentality. I love your video’s. I can not wait to see the video of the KLM 747
I really enjoy Paul's reviews (air and rail) because they are always structured, detailed and documented. That's a big change from other airline vlogers who are so much into perks and luxury self-indulgence. This week I cancelled a return business ticket with AF as they were giving too much grief with my sport equipment. KLM allows sport equipment with no surcharge provided it doesn't exceed specific dimensions. Dank je wel.
I noticed you tap the outside of the plane for good luck upon entry. I’ve been doing that for years, but never noticed anyone else doing that. I’m always looking forward to your next video!
Really? Seen people do that so many times. Imagine my surprise when I saw someone LICKING the airplane door once when he was entering! Not even joking. Dude standing next to me saw it too. Both him and I were stunned... HUGE WTF!
Yeah I've always done it as well, not really sure why I started, but know I've been doing it since I was a child (may have been something my late Mum taught me, she loved flying).
It's great seeing a video about my local airport :) Although, embarrassingly, I've never flown from here! Having been to holiday destinations like Tenerife etc, we've had to fly from Newcastle / Leeds Bradford. When we went to Thailand we flew from Heathrow, and to Malaysia we flew from Manchester. This year we're going to Phuket and are flying from Edinburgh with Qatar. We just don't have the airlines up here (yet!).
You were fed well on these two flights, and I'm sure you appreciated that the crews kept you informed about the delays. You couldn't have expected more! I was picturing myself (with long legs) on the first hop in a seat with 29-pitch. Paying for extra legroom would be worth it!
I'm from Hamilton, ON, Canada and we have one of the only two flying Lancaster bombers in the world (the UK has the other) and it's dedicated to Andrew Mynarski. If you're ever around southern Ontario, it's definitely worth a visit the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Thanks for the videos, man! These are great.
Another excellent Paul Lucas video. Not flown KLM in a long time if ever but their product looks pretty solid. What an airport Teesside is! Glad you eventually got to HEL. Can't wait to watch you getting out of HEL. Most people go to HEL and back: you go to HEL and beyond!
Superb video as always, love the fact Paul that you include these smaller airports around the country to start your journeys off. Always interesting to see what these airports do prior to departure in contrast to the bigger airports. Look forward to the rest of the videos coming up 👌👍
A couple of minor corrections. Air UK was purchased by KLM somewhere around 1996/7 (the exact date of the agreement is unknown to me) and incorporated into KLM Cityhopper, KLM's low cost, very efficient and flexible daughter company. The routes previously flown by Air UK were incorporated into Cityhopper's network over a two-three year period as Air UK was wound down. The reason for the takeover was that British Transport Holdings, Air UK's owners were a marginally profitable company but flew nearly 35-38% of KLM's connecting traffic into Amsterdam. Having Air UK go belly up would not have been in KLM's interest. Currently Cityhopper has one less Embraer than KLM has 737's. Come the introduction of the Embraer E2 series in 2021 you may well find Cityhopper has more aircraft than KLM has 737's. The platform where you parked in the Embraer in Amsterdam has had various names. Amongst them were A Platform and later Bravo Platform (due to the stand designations and in this area), the Commuter Platform as used by the Airport in official documents but the internal name by the workers is "het mieren nest" meaning ant's nest because of the apparently chaotic but ordered work performed by the turnaround crews. The Fokker Farm was a term used by engineers. With regard to delays and unusual events you will find many KLM captains and crew members will speak directly to passengers at the gate. It's what they do because they want to. They know who pays their wages, what their passengers want to know and the questions most likely to be asked. The iPads issued to all crew members will have the latest information on the ground. Unfortunately speaking to passengers at the gate is not always possible. The idiots who end up running British airports often prevent this with rules that prevent crews from moving from the Apron to the Gate pathetically citing "security" as the reason (airports hate pilots). So if this is not possible crews will often make a public address in the cabin. You will also find that Amsterdam ATC Flow planners, the people who restrict traffic are totally unaware of modern aircraft performance and limitations and will needlessly overreact to any weather condition or event (my experience with nearly 8,000 flights over 20 years). Some consider that the largest department in the LVNL (Dutch CAA and ATC) is the Flight Prevention Department. If they were told Burger King had run out of mayonnaise (chip saus - a Dutch necessity) they would impose a 30% flow reduction - because!
I’m from Teesside originally, I used to live 10mins away from here, and my parents still do. I hope for the day they do reasonably priced flights to and from here to the city.
Brought back some memories here! Used to work for ICI (remember them?) and they had a plane on permanent charter for i think 5 flights a day between Manchester & Teesside return. Got to say Teesside airport looks a lot nicer today, I seem to recall it resembled a very large porto-cabin back in the early 90s ;-)
Cheers Paul. Nice to see Middleton St George again. I remember from my school days in Guisborough watching Gloster Javelins roaring round the circuit. Happy days.
Flew KLM from Teesside to Amsterdam>Berlin last month .. normally get a direct cheapo flight from Manchester but these days you can not rely on the trains to get to Manchester Airport. So more expensive 6am flight ... but really impressed all round with Teesside Airport... sail through security etc and KLM impressive as well. Will defiantly use both again
I find it cool that you show smaller airports, too, not only the big hubs. From what you show, it’s a little, yet tidy and comfortable airport. I have seen many others that are bigger, but much worse in that regard. And KLM? It may not be as fancy as some airlines from the Middle East, but it’s a reliable airline and their strength is doing a consistently solid job.
Great video and review! KLM offers top notch service, thank you for letting us share this great experience with you! All the best from the west coast of Florida USA!!!
Remember AirUK? My first ever flight as a very small person was on an AirUK Fokker Friendship, then the next year one of the early BAE-146s, although as a small child I didn’t believe WhisperJet was an appropriate name for the nose of a Jet!
My husband used to fly into and out of Teesside all the time. He had to go there on business often so he flew on KLM from Houston to Amsterdam and then caught a smaller plane into Teesside.
I loved the decoration of that KLM lounge in Schipol. I really hope to fly KLM once I can travel again as they seem like such an amazing airline (and The Netherlands is on my bucket list!)
I used to work there years ago in the cargo building down near the railway station, the airport has never been used to its full potential , if I remember correctly it has one of the longest regional airport runways in the UK, definitely not used as it should be
I'm sure it does. its about the normal average length for an international airport. I think one of the presidents once landed here in Air Force one. Your right about the potential. It has a larger catchment area than LBA and Newcastle. However to get this airport up to the standards that modern international (somewhat) busy Airports (like LBA and NCL) a lot of work has to be done. Improved Terminal, Scrapping the terminal Fee, More air side ancillary services and products, Better Taxiway links (especially for RWY23), Better connections to the airport etc. Ben Houchen has done a Terrific Job, but there is still miles more that needs to be done to get this airport up to scratch. We are certainly not out the woods just yet. All us Teessider Aviation geeks can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the airport to catch on with the low cost carriers that will start bringing in the flights and footfall to the airport.
Great video! I did a Fokker 70 flight to Teeside on the final day of F70 operations with KLC.. Pretty neat airport, border patrol was quite surprised though when a Dutch guy told them he was only staying there for 5 hours😅
I am amazed you did not run into Guy Gibson and the Damn Buster squadron as well...great history though Paul...love it !! Glad you had the Fokker farm under control (sorry mate bad joke ) Great plane spotting mate !! Brilliant ! Safety versus landing...great flight again and I look forward to the next leg where we can welcome you to Australia !!!
finally my local Airport :D wont be for long Paul, they've got intl flights in the sumer to alicante, Burgas and Majorca. Also will be flying to Dublin, Belfast, Cardiff, Southampton, London city and Isle of man all being daily on a number of rotations increasing the daily flights from 7 to 15 . hopfully Teesside will beovertaking humberside airport as least used :D thanks for another great review paul
Great video Paul! Ive always wondered what it’s like to fly from teeside! Hopefully I’ll get to do it myself one day! Really enjoyed that video! I imagine plane spotting there would be like watching paint dry! Keep it up!
I luckily fly KLM for work, who book us all in Ecconomy class. The regular reasonably priced upgrades are great. Also access to the new Non-Schegen Crown Lounge makes the ticket a little bit more worth it - as that is usually £46 on it's own for access (offered on the app at check in). I normally sit in the bar on the top floor for a quieter experience and view, worth it as the cost of a coffee or a beer if you ask me.
Back in the day of Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY), because of the restrictions making all planes departing from Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus to land in a Turkish mainland Airport, KTHY would often divert to an unscheduled Turkish Airport before continuing to London. For example, we may have been scheduled to land in Antalya, but we would stop in Bodrum for example instead. Very weird... but I do sort of miss KTHY... they were just such a unique airline
Great to hear a mention of AirUK again. I worked with them for quite a few years as cabin crew and did the MME-AMS run on occasion on the old F27/F50. A great little airline in it's day - a shame it came to an end... But that's the aviation industry :-/
In the city of Hamilton (30 miles west of Toronto) at the John C. Munro Intl. airport you will find The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM). They have a flying Lancaster in their collection referred to as the "Mynarski Memorial Lancaster". It is painted in the colours of his aircraft KB726 , VR-A . Vera as we enthusiast's call her . For $3600 . plus a modest membership fee you can actually take a 60 minute flight on her . I watch it fly over Toronto almost every weekend during its flying season . Cheers .
I am amazed by people saying its good how klm is giving so much updates. Its pretty normal for Dutch airlines to do that. Its pretty normal that you have a delay at Amsterdam cause of slots and full capacity of schiphol. I flew TUI this January and they had troubles with the motor. They try to update us as much as possible and they sended us sms messages for information. Always very nice except the delay then
Teesside Airport has great potential to return to its former busy self. They must sort out the ludicrous " one train a week on a Sunday" farce. A big tidy up of the airport grounds needed. The airport is perfectly placed to serve Teesside, Darlington, and beyond.
Love your videos! The funny thing is I caught another video of another You Tuber taking KLM from Amsterdam to Chicago he also was going business class! I was like okay wow! Until I heard you say the view was blocked and I can see that! But on the other person’s video he showed a 2nd floor outside (non-smoking) lounge you could watch planes from. Incidentally when he pans to the planes you can see the passageway you showed in your video.
I was starting to wonder when we’d catch up with your trip down here to Australia! Looking forward to the trek! Thanks for this video! Love the historical information! It’s sad to see former RAF areas abandoned, we have quite a few in Australia. Pity you didn’t get a chance to go to Cunderdin whilst you were here. Not only does it have one of the oldest Gliding Club in Western Australia / Australia, it also has all of the WWII buildings built there to do maintenance on bombers. Love seeing the entry by foot. Sadly I cannot do this as I am in a wheelchair. Pass a cup a through the screen sometime. Would love to sip one whilst watching your videos (haha) Like the Breakfast Box. Looks great! I haven’t the foggiest whilst you were delayed by the way (hahaha) 😂😂 Thanks Paul! Really looking forward to your next video 😊
KLM are probably one of the best airlines in Europe, they provide a very comprehensive service flying to many of the smaller regional airports. I have always loved their customer service and the great value for money that they offer. Staff are generally very friendly and accommodating, I would rather fly KLM than Ryanair or Easyjet. And I feel ever so slightly more at home with KLM than with BA.
