Greetings from Greece, Chris. We use a somewhat different approach in my company for walk in defrost control. The kind of controllers that we use are most of the time the kind with two temperature probes, one for space temperature, and one for coil temperature. We programm a number x for defrosts per day, for y minutes, up to z degrees in coil temperature. I think it's simpler, yet not much less energy efficient, and you don't have to install the controller inside the walk in, but only the probes.

I used to work in Everett Washington, Seagulls loved nesting on the roofs. I was not allowed to mess with them. They are *very* protective of there eggs and young. The Seagulls dive bomb you, yes they actual fly around then swoop down flapping wings at your head and then they deliberately poop as they dive down at you. I had to use old filters to shield myself like Captain America when working on the roofs during nesting season :)

AFAIK you are legally fine evicting pigeons, crows and ravens. Raptors will get you in trouble though. Also with the caveat of "AFAIK" coil cleaner should be a very effective sanitizer. Most soaps are pretty effective sanitizers, dedicated sanitizers are solely that, no soapy/sticky residue to attract dirt when left on and not rinsed...

For future reference, you can clean off bird boo-doo with the following mixture. 1 part Palmolive 1 part Baking soda 5 parts water This is a pre-soak. If the mess is REALLY bad and smells HORRIBLE, replace the water with 3% hydrogen Peroxide. This *shouldn't* damage anything, but it will shred apart any organic waste material and dead things you come across with shocking efficiency. The significant acts as a de greaser. It IS important if you use this, you hit it with a specialized rinse before applying the wash. 2 parts Palmolive 1 part Lysol Concentrate 5 parts Water This is the actual wash. The pre-soak cleans very well, but is mainly meant to cut off major gunk, and this actually cleans what's underneathe it. The lyson disinfects. Rinse with water. Your coil cleaner does the job, but this stuff will handle virtually any organic material you throw at it. Shit, this will actually eliminate Skunk spray.

I have to admit, I can see the newer technology on larger tonnage RTU’s maybe 20 ton up, but the smaller equipment is a financial disaster for the equipment owner at breakdown. Like in your video, maybe it’s a 15 ton Trane with that ECM condenser fan motor failure. The driver fails and that it. Like this one, Trane had 0 in stock! Warranty system in a medical building, summer time, with the space at 80 degrees. Picked up a standard 1075 460v motor with capacitor and had it operating in 2 hours. Took a month for the factory to get me a replacement! Left the temporary motor in the unit since there are 6 others on the same roof. So much for simplicity! Great video’s

If i had to bet, i'd say that they blocked the air flow with boxes and that caused the initial ice up and then it went downhill from there...

Especially since it wasn't TX valve side. Looked like bad airflow ice to me. Over stocking around coil.

I found, that you have to move the defrost termination sensor from the side where the loops are and stick in the coil usually center of the coil. KE2 Therms are notorious for this inadequate defrost issue

Bleach neutralises pigeon crap if you can use it with the equipment.

That unit that has Calcium buildups, is that from a month of misting? Would the cost of an inline water softener be cheaper than a whole coil?

Curious about that cabinet. 40 years as as JM electrician and I can't remember a cabinet that couldn't be opened live by turning the release mechanism on the handle.

In Cali, yes the pigeons have more rights than we do. Maybe you’ll not go to jail.

We use to have big on one building. Dead birds and crap . The dry crap you can get respiratory disease from breathing it . Suppose to be suited and breathing protection and trained . The only way we stop it was to net over the units. Sucks to work on then. Be safe.

nothing better than the smell of coil cleaner and pigeon crap in the morning, everyone loves the electronics until something goes wrong, and the repairs are 3 times as much

Remove motor, take to a motor repair shop, pick up repaired motor and reinstall. No fitment issues. Motor rebuilds often run about 300.00

Had a rack system similar to this here, same pigeon problem, I put rabbit wire in and the maintenance guys removed it, I had moved the sensor closer to the freezing area and modified the settings, the maintenance guys, which didn't know what to do, which is why they called me to begin with, went back into the programming and changed it all back to what was recommended and put the sensor back in its original location, I couldn't make them understand that it needed to be like that for it to run properly and keep the pigeons out, I ended up dropping them as an account.

Fly rats! LoL! Had a job helping to do the p m at a hospital that the 80 year old engineer and his assistant couldn't keep up with ! Went to the air handler for the maternity ward to change the bag filters and found those nasty birds had made straw nests inside of it! Shoveled out 4 30 gallon trash cans of that crap including dead birds and eggs! Pressure cleaned it using the green calgon coil cleaner! Put mechanics wire over the air intake with self tapping screws to stop this! We got a contract to do all the pm for the hospital as a result of this nasty find! There is alot more than just straight HVAC work you have to deal with to do your job Chris!
