Flying (Safe?) Along The California Coast - KDVO to KLLR in A Cirrus SR20

Just a short video showing me out flying place for fun, I'm based out of Gnoss (KDVO) in Novato, and want to fly up the California Coast to Little River (KLLR) in Mendocino. That's about 100 miles direct, on the roads this would be over 3 hours of driving, but flying is about 45minutes.

For everyone asking about the camera and how it's moving around, the camera is a GoPro Max 360 camera. It's fixed in place and shoots a spherical video, when I was putting the video together I was able to add in the camera moves to only show a subset of the field of view. The resolution isn't as good as a camera with a smaller FoV, but it's enormously useful for capturing everything. This is the camera: amzn.to/46OxIi4 (affiliate link) The audio is recorded separately and has to be synchronized afterwards.

Man, 5 years ago that kind of footage got really soft and grainy when cropped-in, but this still looks pretty decent! Not super crispy but not that soft either.

If you don't mind me asking 3 months after your comment, how did you record the audio? The Nflightcam cable? If you had a different solution I would love to hear it because it's difficult to get the NFlightCam stuff where I live and I'm about to DIY something similar unless there's an easier solution.

I told my students to practice maintaining altitude within 50 feet and heading within 10° while doing their time-building flights for instrument. Also, getting flight following helps you get use to the banter from ATC.

Yes, even after getting your IFR rating you should more often than not fly IFR flight plans, or at least flight following, if you are going long distances. It's best to become totally accustomed to ATC procedures, lingo, and confident in radio comms.

What constitutes a steep bank differs with aircraft type. My flying experience was in gliders, and I got some stick time with a 737. We were flying along the Grand Canyon, so we wanted to lower a wing. The regular pilot called for a shallow forward slip. I was at 25 degrees when I was informed that any more was considered aerobatic for the 737 and the crew and airframe were not approved for aerobatics. I dialed it back to ~15 degrees to be safe.

I also varies by country, when I got my UK PPL we had to demonstrate a 60 degree banked turn. Then I moved to the US and in the same type (PA28) my instructor said 45 was the max.

I start my life long dream of getting my license since I was 12. I grew up in the late 90’s with my dad in Cessna, Pipers, done aerobatics in a Van RV-6 with a friend, sped around in a Lancair. I gave up my acceptance to Embry Riddle because my ex wife didn’t want to move. I’ve watched you and been inspired. I fixed some things in my life to get to this point. On Nov 4th I get to share the joy of first flight in a light aircraft with my son. Well I lost my log book so not technically my first but first of the new beginnings.

Finishing PPL was a personal victory that non-pilots will never fully appreciate. But those of us who have run the entire path know. Nothing but total respect as you take this to victory. Fly safe. 👍

A tip from my instrument check ride. After the head town unusual attitudes I was told to look at the instruments and recover. I was surprised that he gave it back to me straight and level, Throttle was low and so was the speed., I went to full throttle, staying straight and level, but the speed stayed very low. RPM was normal. Speed still low? Did a full scan and saw that the flaps were full down. Nursed them up while staying straight and level. reset the trim .Then did a quick turn of my head and looked up and ask the designee "What the Hell?" His explanation was that a passenger may put the flaps down. He admitted that I made a good recovery and we returned to base (hood off). I had passed.

A critique, not a criticism, from a CFI. You fly well and are religious about checklists, so you are likely to stay a safe pilot. I would suggest that you should have gone further North along the coast, in order to join the 45 per AIM (Figure 4-3-3). I would also suggest a closer pattern to the runway. I'm a sneaky instructor and engines die when I am close to the runway. I don't think you were ever going to make the runway in an engine out. During the descent in the pattern, I would have liked to see your eyes outside the cockpit more. You are not alone in this, especially with glass panels. During my multi, I had the same problem, so my instructor covered the entire panel. Thanks for the video.

If you get the chance I recommend landing at the field where I learned to fly, which is the university airport in Davis, which has the distinction of getting the ICAO code of KEDU. Also it's a bit of a long ways but Columbia airport outside of Yosemite is really nice, it makes for a fun landing with a chance to practice high density altitude and stunning views of the Sierras on the way in and out.

It’s pretty cute how you’ve got that “buhduh buhduh buhduh uhhhh buhduh buhduh uhh buhduh buhduh” pilot cadence down. Maybe it’s the quality of the headset, maybe it’s watching your instruments taking precedence over speaking, but it’s bang on hahah

Awesome video! Hope you're enjoying your instrument training journey LOL! [insert sarcasm]. Anyway, I digress. My only suggestion on an approach where you're surrounded by uneven terrain and tall trees is to approach a bit higher and faster (assuming you have an extra 500-1000ft of runway). Last thing you want is to lose an engine on final and have no altitude or airspeed margin and end up with a really bad day. Could mean the difference between landing on the numbers (or whereabouts) or landing on trees half-mile short.

A couple of points to ponder. Keeping radio calls succinct is important. Instead of including "is" before the action, just state "(field name) 427LJ Turning....". When you graduate to instruments it will be something like "427LJ climbing to...", "427LJ turning (right/left) to heading". I have flown in places like the LA Basin which is busy, busy on the radio and this was about all you had time for. Some other commenters reflected my observations on your approach to Little River. You seemed to be dragging your approach in; you appeared to be lower than the standard 2.5 degree glide slope. That may just be distortion by the camera. I used to live about a mile off the end of a municipal airport. I noted that the instructors were teaching their students to "drive" into the runway. If they had lost power, they might have ended up landing on my street. I first learned to fly gliders (at 14) where you needed to keep your altitude as high as possible and lose it with slipping and spoilers (flaps on power planes). I was taught to maintain as much altitude as possible. My bona fides, a few thousand hours of flight time.
