Margot Kidder’s reading in this scene is vulnerable, sensitive and so feminine and human. She was brilliant in this role. And there’s these wonderful nuances in her reading. She even adds a perfect little sigh during the pause in “here I am like a kid out of school” line. She also possessed a distinct voice with a perfect touch of raspiness that added dimension to her performance throughout the whole film. A performance for the ages.
The best scene in all the Superman movies. It's pure magic, unrivalled by any other. And it owes so much to John Willams' score. May Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder rest in heaven as blissfully as their characters are flying in this scene. Thank you so much for the Superman movies.
I know its not really a popular scene among diehard fans of the Superman films or the franchise as a whole and while it may be schmaltzy, without it Lois Lane's "death" wouldn't have anywhere near the same kind of power for the audience and Superman's grief that drives him to reverse the earth's orbit to undo it just wouldn't read the same way. Leaving it out it would be like taking Over the Rainbow out of Wizard of Oz almost
Ike was so magical use to dream about this part as a kid is how magical it was for me I felt it it was real to me he was real I use to dream there was a superman somewhere lol Lois Lan had the best most magical time with a man a superman
I'm a grown ass man...and this scene always puts a big smile on my face, and warms my heart no end!!!Must be because this was the first film I saw with my Dad in the cinema when I was a little kid! I'll never forget it!
"...You and I can belong to each other. If you need a friend, I'm the one to fly to. If you need to be loved, here I am. Read my mind." It chokes me up every time.
3:30-4:03 I've revisited this film recently and I didn't really register or appreciate Lois' voiceover when she expresses her feelings for Superman upon past viewing. After experiencing it after many years, I really think this is a lovely scene and it caught me emotionally. This is truly a lovely scene helped by the performances, effects and music.
I so agree, this music was incredible, my favorite of all movies, and this scenery has a beautiful message as well, more then what many ppl may notice. The twin towers made my eyes watery
@@chrisf2874 It wasn't a poem. I was the actual lyrics written for the music playing. Why they decided to use a spoken text instead of someone singing the song, i don't know for sure.
Witnessing this on the big screen is an experience no one should turn down. The heart, love, joy and emotion that went into filming this scene is enough to make a grown 23 year old man cry just like it did the last 1 million times I’ve watched it in standard definition on tv
Despite the primitive limited special effects, it's the human connection combined with John Williams love theme song "Can you read my mind" makes this a scene epically timeless!!
I saw this movie way back in 1978 at Leicester Square Empire. It was the most Unforgettable experience. John Williams music excels everything, the romantic theme and it's joy. The movie itself is the best even today.
This is still magic. Just magic. This movie's story isn't great, but the moments with heart land so amazingly. It's 70% John Williams doing the work, but damn.
No one will ever read this, but this scene has had such a powerful effect on my thoughts of what romance is. It breaks my heart forever that each of these actors had such dramatic and sad lives after this.
Every time I see this scene, time, for me stands still. I cry hard because those times, for me, were so innocent and happy. I also cry because these two very very special people left us far too early in life........and I'll always love them both forever because, what they did here on the silver screen was nothing less then pure magic. Can you read my mind God bless you Chris and Margo.....I love you both very much🌹🌹
All these beautiful comments! 😍😍😍 It's so good to be part of a collective who feel this whole powerfully nostalgic, overwhelming, sensory experience as deeply as I do 😍😍😍 Sublime magic, forever tinged with sadness and tragedy... Great to see upcoming generations enjoying this too 🤩
When i was 6yo. with my hole family went to see Superman, and this scene, and the one where he Screams for Her before going beserker are printed in my memory forever. You're right, we are not alone, it will sound corny, but all we need is love. Thank you for your words and i wish you a wonderful life my friend, and your family too. Ohhh and you must watch Superman & Lois, you're not going to regret it, trust me.
This is pure cinema multiplied with the epic score of John Williams . I wish I could go back in time and see it in the theatres. I'm pretty sure everyone was with their jaw on the floor.
This scene is now more touching than ever before now that Margot Kidder has died. RIP Margot and RIP Christopher Reeve, you two are now flying in the heavenly sky in peace. 😥
The most romantic and magical scene in cinema. This scene transformed the movie to one of the greatest films of all time. The music, the spoken words, and the chemistry between Kidder and Reeves is both timeless and breathtaking.
Chris and Margot, thank you both for a memorable movie scene that will live forever! May you both soar just as majestically in Heaven! Rest In Peace to you both! Know that you're both missed and will never be forgotten!
I love how there's no "wooshing" noise when he flies in this scene. The only sound is the occasional flap of his cape. Also, I love how he doesn't land with a ground crushing thump that anyone who flies in a super hero movie does nowadays.
Watching Superman 2 with my 6 year old granddaughter and started remembering when Superman, The Movie came out. I was 23, had a 4 year old son who was Superman crazy and a 2 year old daughter. Doesn't seem like it has been 36 years since it came out. My husband and I went to see it first, to make sure it didn't have anything a 4 year old would try to copy. I fell in love with the movie then and there. I am 59 now, the 4 year old is 40, the two year old is 38 and they were joined by a baby sister in 1984, that loved Superman from seeing it on TV and she's 30 now. It's her six year old daughter and her twin brother that love to watch it now with me. These two, like myself and others, feel this is the true Superman, Christopher Reeve. Can't believe he will be gone 10 years this October. Like others have said, Christopher Reeve made you believe a man could fly, and every time I see this flying scene with Superman and Lois, even after 36 years, I still can close my eyes and imagine like others, I'm flying with Superman. I watched George Reeves on the old TV series, Dean Cain in Lois and Clark and Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, but Christopher Reeve to me is and always will be Superman.
Patti Lipscomb your comments has brought me to tears. Though I was born 3 years after the movie. I really felt this movie is very close to my heart. Indeed Chris Reeve is the one and only Superman in our hearts!! God Bless all who made this movie.
Granted the flying looks very outdated, but that one moment when they fly by the Statue of Liberty has to be one of the most convincing and beautiful scenes, the flying just looks so real!
This is a metaphor that love needs to stay forever young. One of the only sources of magic we have, even as we age. Regardless of what life throws at you, keep your heart and love young.
Here's to Margot Kidder, who portrayed one of the most powerful women in fiction, Lois Lane....she made a great performance and complimented Reeve well....her defining role will never be forgotten... R.I.P.
A lot of shit happened in her life in the years since. It's so sad what happened to Christopher Reeve. He was the embodiment of Superman, to the very end.
this scene gets me everytime when i watch the movie i start crying its so beautiful and the words lois says really gets me may i also add that christopher reevs so hansome especially when he smiles
My part was the if you got me who got you then the flying scene ahhh superman had stolen my heart so believed in him is how good christopher reeve did his part
This piece is timeless... it is another excellent score by the living legend John Williams. I have accrued many moments of dreams listening to this piece; it is a treasure to find music that can visualize one's dream :)
"Superman: The Movie" was the biggest movie of my youth. It was released the month after I turned 13 years old. I'm glad I was there for the birth of the modern day Superhero movie. STM always has been, and always will be the BEST of them all. I LOVE YOU Lois Lane/ Margot Kidder. RIP.
Like if you remember this from 1978 and still get chills or any other positive feelings from watching this scene after all these years. This is so good. This is so solid. This is a real "moment" in film making and cinema.
@@daranchan891 I saw this at the beginning of summer in 1977, just before my first student trip to Europe. What a great sendoff and what a great reason to look forward to returning home.
The chemistry that Superman and Lois Lane had in this movie has never been repeated. You could feel the love and sexual tension between these two. The newer Superman versions failed to illuminate the chemistry between these two characters!!!
Sorry but she wasn't the worst. She was everything lois is meant to be. Amy adams was the worst as lois. Neither were too young. Bosworth has a more mature face! And she wasn't wooden. Her caring nature and how she got worried was great. I think routh needed diff colours overall lol. Reeves pulled off the blue and red but routh needed maybe a darker suit?
How is that too young?! Margot and reeves were also quite young when they started. And i dont know anyone who is bashing her to be honest. Most people loved the film. I haven't seen her other films. And amy perfect? Are you Ok!??? She is awful awful AWFUL as Lois. She's 40 btw. I swear mos is about him starting off? I hate seeing her as lois and cavill is also awful. The director is very silly for sucking emotion out of the films. Reeves had a manly face and body. Sooo he could play anyone and get away with it lol even when he died he looks so young. Are you serious about rouths clothes... everyone complains it was babyish. Looking back I kind of agree but not much. Maybe a LITTLE darker. Maybe if he buffed up a bit it would've been better
What why not? Margot was the best and she was in her 20s not 30s. Amy is far from lois lane. Idc what her age is. The age of the talent shouldn't matter their performance should. Kate didn't come cross as a girl. Most people did NOT backlash. The only sad thing was they expected more MONEY and more villain scenes and fighting scenes. Reeves and Margot did NOT work better because of age!! He always seemed older. Both were TALENTED and it worked. Kate and routh had the same chemistry while amy and cavill have been thrown together. Agree about the indiana jones example. And I disagree about the age thing lol hollywood is brainwashing the masses into accepting big age gaps and the women are deemed old when young. Superman is a very good example which goes against it but superhero films in general have good morals and don't promote medieval beliefs lol. Also those women got attention at that age because that is when they became famous! Debbie harry always seemed in control. Madonna was a big BITCH to everyone and still is crazy lol. Whitney was always great. Celine overrated. Barbara was always great. Tina too. Cher too. Belinda didn't make it that well. Adele became famous when in her early twenties? So? It doesn't mean anything!! Talent does. And obviously casting them properly. She never looked 22. Seemed more mature and in control. Routh definitely seemed younger. With margot she seemed younger than reeves and he was more in control. Did you know lois is based on one of the creator's wife? O.i
Omg her age does not matter. Watch black Christmas. It's called talent. And that BW film of twins. And you really are deluded if you pick on this stupid age thing. In reality TALENT matters. Something cavill and adams lack. Adams is great in other genres. But as Lois she was awful. I wish kidder and reeves made more films and singer got to continue with SR not a new reboot. As long as the casting is close in age and makes sense it does not matter. Talent always does and suitability!
You know, whenever I'm going through a tough time I always think "Superman will make it better" and I read a Superman comic, watch this movie or listen to this song and I feel better almost instantly.
It's fantastic that a film this big, from one side of the Universe to the other, with so much responsibility takes a swift detour and just... well... takes the audience out on a night with Superman. Rarely do you get moments in films that stray from the plot, I mean the scene serves no narrative purpose other than to strengthen the characters. I can't imagine the film without this sequence. It's silly, melodramatic, and romantic and it's why I love films and why Richard Donner is one of the greatest filmmakers - he gets it.
Can you read my mind? Do you know what it is that you do to me? I don’t know who you are. Just a friend from another star. Here I am like a kid out of school. Holding hands with a god. I’m a fool. Will you look at me? Quivering. Like a little girl shivering. You can see right through me. Can you read my mind? Can you picture the things I’m thinking of? Wondering why you are all the wonderful things you are. You can fly! You belong in the sky. You and I could belong to each other. If you need a friend, I’m the one to fly to. If you need to be loved, here I am. Read my mind.
This scene sort of typifies what is missing in today's blockbusters. Today it's all abut wowing people, shocking people with some death or headfake, and some big set action piece with CGI. This movie is all heart and appealed to EVERY moviegoer, not just a specific fanbase/demo who will go see it multiple times.
This is exactly the kind of lovely quiet moment that made this film so special (and also what Patty Jenkins wisely did for her _Wonder Woman_ ): it made us care for the characters even more. Rest in peace, Mr. Reeve and Ms. Kidder
Recuerdo ver esta película en el cine Insurgentes 70 de la CDMX....mis jefes me cumplieron la ilusión de ver la película de Superman....mis máximos idolos: Mi Papá y Superman!!!
This was an amazing scene, that I liked in '78 but didn't fully appreciate as a 13 year old. But I sure so now. Great chemistry & acting from Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder, put together with that amazing arrangement from John Williams. It's pure magic.
Not only is this The BEST scene from, Superman: The Movie, but it is also the BEST track from the, Superman: The Movie soundtrack! (along with the terrace scene where she Interviews Supes right before this scene) I just love how, Lois Lane is this big time tough ass reporter with such a confident, & cocky attitude...HOWEVER, right in this moment when she, “Spends The Night With Superman”, she just automatically becomes this little school girl with a huge crush and that tough exterior of hers just crumbles & falls down! She just becomes SO vulnerable!! I love it!!
I hope that superman and lois are flying every night since they each passed on and that they are together in heaven because deep down we would never had believed that a man can fly and that is why superman can fly. Lois and superman always and forever. One day i will see them again and see them both flying every night.
