Part two of my ferry flight in a Cessna Grand caravan from Virginia to Wisconsin. Flying over the Appalachian Mountains with low clouds and visibility forced me to do some challenging scud running.

And we’re back! Great video P2 Kerry! You gotta live scud running! Glad to see Scary Kerry back again! Love your old saying “Let’s run away and live to fly another day!” 😅 Great video hope to meet you at Oshkosh this year! Cheers 🥂

Hi Kerry, Would it not have been possible to circle up over your airport until you got above the icing and then make for your destination airport? No FIKI on your Caravan?
@KerryDMcCauley
@KerryDMcCauley 5 месяцев назад
The tops along the route of flight were reported to be high with tons of ice and the Caravan's de-ice boots are inop. It's a skydiving aircraft, nothing works!

I’ve tandem jumped out of this Caravan at Baldwin. Small world. Got my PPL after that. Read your Ferry Pilot book after that. Recently got my instrument rating. That low overcast had my blood pressure up. Fear of icing is appropriate .

ADBS-B is not giving you anything near "real time" weather. It's anywhere from 10-20 minutes delayed. It's a common thing that gets pilots in trouble. SiriusXM is the closest to real-time if you don't have a wx radar. ADS-B is good a high-flight view of the situation and how it's changing. It should not be used for real-time decision making.
@KerryDMcCauley

It's gotten better, but you're correct, not real time. Srill better than nothing.

Question Kerry- flying those low altitudes- how do u monitor radio towers or other obstacles?
@KerryDMcCauley
@KerryDMcCauley 5 месяцев назад
Firstly with my eyes. You have to have good visibility to scud run down low. Secondly I have ForeFlight up and running. It alerts you when any obstacles are in your path.

Greetings from Cape Town. I also operate aircraft Cessna 206”s for skydiving purposes. Would be interesting to know the financial stats for the C208 with the Blackhawk. Yes, that ferry flight must be expensive!
@KerryDMcCauley
@KerryDMcCauley 5 месяцев назад
I love Cape Town! I was just there last year. I fly the Texas Turbine conversion but they're pretty similar I think. I started out using 2 182's and 2 206's and went to a Twin Otter then a Caravan. The big thing when moving up to a turbine is the ability to turn loads without too many shut downs. The starts will kill you if you have to shut down after each load. If you can turn the tandem instructors even if the plane sits on the ground running for a few minutes that works.

"A day in the life". I reminds me of when we flew the Mooney to Florida from Minnesota for the airshow. I hate to admit it, but that flight was a blast! Challenging flying can be fun, but you have to minimize the risk where you can. Your advice to have as many outs as possible pre-planned and prioritized from most desirable to least desirable, is exactly what keep pilots alive. Great video Kerry, keep them coming.

Not really that bad. Just keep good visibility in front of you, a solid escape plan behind you and stick to my three rules of scud running. 1. Don't fly into the clouds. 2.Don't fly into the clouds. 3. Don't fly into the clouds.

Great memories of 1976/77 when I had a job with a helicopter company in the UK. We did pleasure flights at County Shows in the summer and pipeline/transmission line inspections all year round. In the UK we have M1 and M6 going north/south and M62 east/west. Many a time we came down to 300ft to read the motorway signs to work out where we were. All VFR, no GPS, Foresight or weather apps back in those days.... Great fun for a 16yo!!
