I feel very lucky to be able to fly my family around. In this video I will show you a few things that came up (both good and bad) on a recent flight to Palm Springs. This is a real day in the life of a general aviation family.

I'm painting the wings on my old 7EC dark blue along with the majority of the fuselage to help with ice melting. Many times I remember just itching to go flying but had to wait while frost slowly melted from white wings.

My flight school uses a plant watering can with hot water and it all washes away like magic.
@mannypuerta5086
@mannypuerta5086 3 года назад
The top of our 185’s wings are painted Alaska flag blue. The ice melts before my buddies’ when in the backcountry. I still have to wait...no watering can with hot water (meanwhile, the Honda 1000 is warming the engine via the Tanis heater). I’ve seen it cold enough that the hot water would run someplace, refreeze and cause problems. A hot Type 4, like the big boys use would be nice, but it’s all part of the backcountry experience.
@spurgear4
@spurgear4 3 года назад
@@mannypuerta5086 I had a 150 thaw for me one morning and while practicing forced approaches the flaps wouldn't retract because of a frozen micro switch. Once in the air the water that ran off the wing refroze the switch. Flying a 150 with full flaps all the way home was interesting.
@mannypuerta5086
@mannypuerta5086 3 года назад
@@spurgear4 And that’s just one reason why I like the manual flaps on our 185. When checking anyone out on electric flap airplanes I always have them do a go around from a full flap, short field approach and then “fail” the flaps in the full down position. I am often asked why I do that. I reply that its better to experience that with a CFI than the first time it happens, taking them by surprise. Also nice to know where the flap, gear, electric trim and autopilot CB’s are located. A Flight Engineer mantra is “bulb, breaker, book.”
@spurgear4
@spurgear4 3 года назад
@@mannypuerta5086 I soloed in an old 140 Cherokee and really like the Johnson bar flap handle. My 7EC is flapless. The full flap go around is a really good lesson. My experience was on a summer evening just above sea level. I think it may have been a real forced approach on a hot humid and high situation

On our last vacation in California we only had two headsets, so the kids just got some earplugs...no big deal. The only issue I´ve had with my kids, especially the younger one (then 6 years old), is the occasional diversion. We flew MYF-VIS and after struggling to finally get up to the 9000ft or so to comfortably cross the hills she mentioned she could stand it for just a few more minutes.....at least we also had a great burger at Apple Valley. :) We are truly blessed to be able to bring our family for such nice trips. The other day I had my 11-year old fly us back home for an hour or so, she had a blast and so did I.

Nice! The only time I've ever taken a family trip was when my wife. When we were newlyweds and I was in the Navy stationed at NAS Moffett Field, I rented a Piper PA-28-141 from the Navy Flying Club for a trip to Trinity Center up in Northern California. We spent a week on the lake in a rented house boat. Our next trip was down to Harris Ranch in a rented C-172... also from the Navy Flying Club. Once I got out of the Navy and we had kids, my wife decided it was too risky to have both parents in the same airplane to travel in, but I did take just my kids on trips with me to airshows, etc. My kids never complained about wearing a headset and, as you mentioned, the passenger isolation button on the audio panel was a must! Today, I fly with my son, who is a recent college graduate and a newly rated CFI. In 2016, we bought our Grumman Tiger, which my son used to get his private, instrument, commercial and CFI, while studying for a degree in aviation management. We fly that thing everywhere. Our last long, long cross country was a visit to AirVenture 2017. We're hoping to do that trip again in 2021. Great looking family, by the way. Fly safe and fly often.

Good idea for everyone to get COVID tested when planning to meet-up with someone outside the household, especially the elderly. On another note, my father and I took-off one morning after the sun melted frost off the plane. As we climbed into cooler air, the trim tab froze in a climb attitude. I descended back to warmer air rather than break the linkages. One of those things we don't receive training for but learn the hard way.
@LimaFoxtrot
@LimaFoxtrot 3 года назад
What is the test going to do for you? Absolutely nothing. It measures a single point in time. If you think you’re exposed, it takes a few days for a test to even register it. Then it takes 3-5 days to even get the results. During that time, you could have contracted COVID anyways. What ridiculous advise lol

I took my first aeroplane flight when I was about 10 yrs old. It was in a Cessna at one or other day event where one could pay for a short flight in an aeroplane. Very excited, me and two other passengers boarded. When we were up in the air, one of the passengers said someting to the effect that the pilot must show us a trick with the aeroplane. Whether the pilot did a stall manoeuvre or what, it scared me a lot. Since then I have a fear of flying and wish I did not fear it so much, for it looks so satisfying training and flying a plane oneself. I have since resigned myself driving where I want to be. Please make people's first experience feel save and enjoyable.

Kids are so different from one another that it is really hard to anticipate what issues any particular family will present. I think the best general advice is to start with a short local flight and see what your particular kids do. Then, after you have a plan for whatever issues your kids present, start planning cross country flights.

Noise-induced hearing loss. Anything over 85 dB for that long of a flight is slowly and permanently damaging your hearing. A Cessna is around 100 dB. (Maybe a little less for the back seat of a 182 filled with soft cargo.) Being logarithmic, every 5 dB increase is twice the sound energy. So that's 8 times the level of safe exposure limit. I don't know if children are more susceptible to damage, but they have longer to live with hearing loss, and it's by your decisions. If you can't get kids to wear hearing protection, don't fly with them, or get a quieter aircraft. They make headsets more appropriate for children, too. It sucks, but there's a reason folks tell you, "When you have children, the door closes." It opens again when they're older, but you are their "good-decision-maker" until they can do it on their own.

Thanks for this video especially. I'm in exactly the same boat with a wife, 7-year-old and 3-year-old in a 182. If you can figure out the secret to getting a 3-year-old to wear a headset let me know please. The closest I've gotten is a kids movie on an iPad with the audio through the panel and the pilot isolated. Still she hates the headset and tends to take it off. What are your thoughts on car seats (approved for airline use) for small kids in GA aircraft? I lug my daughter's seat into the 182 thinking it's at least a bit more safety, but it really does make the headset even more uncomfortable for her. We have rear shoulder harnesses so I could strap her down tight, but my thinking is that I'll never get her as secure as in a car seat.

It’s tough right? I will let you know if we crack the code but so far it’s been mostly fail. We used to bring the car seat but it’s a lot to lug for the added safety in the event of a short stop. I think I’m fine with a booster seat for her (even tho she’s technically too young) - I think she will like added visibility - I’ll let you know how it goes.

I fly several co-workers on their 1st flights and similar stuff like that. I walk a fine line during safety briefings to be thorough but not scare them. Any tips? I never use the word crash...I generally say if we land somewhere other than an airport, blah blah blah blah.....

I use the term, “in the unlikely event of an unscheduled, off-airport landing” with a smile on my face and a light tone. Usually gets a chuckle and if they have a question they feel more comfortable asking it.

I also tell them, very honestly, that I haven't had to land off airport all week (or month or whatever). Well, I mean, I've never had to. But it's also true that I haven't had to do it all this week. Sometimes they laugh, sometimes it makes them even more nervous 🤷‍♂️

Great video. Fellow CFI here with about 400 hours. I can’t get my wife to go fly with me. She is really freaked out about small planes but I am dying to share this experience with her. Any tips on how to calm her nerves?
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 3 года назад
Try a very short flight with her (fly very mellow ... weather nice etc) -- make sure its pretty (sunset or something similar) -- get a nice airplane (as nice as possible) -- make sure she can hear everything well and talk to you with ease -- make sure she's relaxed (if it takes a couple glasses of wine or whatever she does to relax, that's fine). After the first flight she might see that flying in a GA airplane is lot MORE relaxing than flying in an airliner due to the large windows and feeling of "always knowing" what's going on.

I flew mine to a fancy shopping venue out of state, then we ate a nice dinner and then flew back. She was SOLD!! 😆 ❤️ Like Jason said, made sure that the weather was perfect. She loves flying in the 182 more than I do now!

When you use isolate can your family still hear you or are you completely isolated both directions?

Just tell the little one she can't wear the headset. Don't even have it in sight. She will demand to wear the headset.

Why don't you file IFR for these flights?

The MEAs are higher than I wanted to fly and when the weather is nice I prefer the flexibility I get VFR

Hello, can a 14 year old do your ground school? How much is it and do you get a certificate for it? Thanks

Hi! Yes - and you do get an endorsement for the written test. There is so much more in there too (flying videos, textbooks, etc.) there is a free 3-day trial to see if it’s for you. Http://www.learnthefinerpoints.com/ground-school

If the weather is nice I prefer the flexibility with VFR. There are portions of the trip where we fly a lot lower than the MEAs (or even MVAs would allow).

Why do you need a headset?
@gringoloco8576
@gringoloco8576 3 года назад
Because of the engine and prop noise. You can't hear each other if you don't have a headset on. I mean you could try to shout...but these small planes are noisy!
@benthurber5363
@benthurber5363 3 года назад

Hey the "information panel" under the video makes this unwatchable. I'm not sure if this COVID panel thing is something youtube did without your knowledge or consent or if you wanted it there....just saying once I realized I couldn't remove it, I stopped watching. I click on videos like this to not have to think about all of the other stuff going on....unfortunately have to downvote as well due to analytics and hoping you might be able to do something about youtube's garbage advert/propaganda
