Seeing Pensacola and Destin make me homesick. I did a lot of flying down there. I'm getting ready for a LONG cross country from Hartford CT to Crestview FL in a few weeks and this video is great for preparing.

Love the view, much better than airline. Sometimes low and slow humbles you to the beauty around us that we miss a lot of times.

The best flight I ever had was with my then 12 year old daughter to the Cessna 150-152 Club flyin in from Augusta Kansas to Clinton Iowa in 2015. It was my longest cross country since getting the PPL in 2010. I was nervous starting out. I was so nervous that I stopped at a familiar airport 20 miles away from home. I thought, "My daughter's life is on the line. What am I doing?" The weather was VFR, but not perfect. Maybe 7 mile vis. My daughter was game. I decided to try one more leg. Then another. We continued to Clinton and had a ball. Since then, I've done many cross countries and I got my IR for safety. I still fly a C150. I haven't yet done everything I can in the small plane. Once I'm satisfied, I might move up to a faster, larger plane.

I love your videos! Because of you, I started lessons at age 11 and I have over 50 hours now. I just did a cross country from Pennsylvania to Columbus international and it was amazing!

This is military-grade off-topic, so I apologize. I'm a bit of a traffic nerd, but I almost didn't catch the significance of that highway interchange at 4:59. It looks kind of like a regular cloverleaf, but it's actually SO much more interesting. The problem with a cloverleaf is that the on-ramp comes before the off-ramp in the center, requiring ALL merging cars to cross paths, which is both slow and dangerous. But look at this brilliant design. All cars get off before any cars get on, requiring no cross-weaving. And it uses this neat figure-8 looking setup. Very, very cool. Okay, back to airplanes.

Carry money. Be flexible. Dont run out of gas. Learned so much common sense here. Thanks

Josh, nice list of things to think about, things to take with you, and great point on the credit card being declined while traveling (been there, had it happen). One thing I'd add is that I always call my next fuel stop while I'm on the ground to make sure their pump is working, credit card machine is working, etc. I've had a couple of times when I've gotten stopped only to find something was broken, and I had to go elsewhere. It can cause a nice delay in a well planned day. One time I called ahead and was told everything was good to go, on arrival I found their pump meter was out of order. I told the guy that I had called ahead and was assured everything was fine, he asked who I had talked to and I said I didn't know, but it was a woman. He informed me she was the waitress in the cafe and didn't know anything...He took pity on me, filled me up based on how much fuel I said it would take, and off I went.

Survival kit- add a bundle of clothes line or poly rope- shelter prep- lashing anything to carry- splints- also hand crank chargeable flashlight.

With those dance moves it's clear that Chris has his instrument rating :o) I have a suggestion for the survival kit. Make sure you know how to use everything in it. Especially the fire starting items. The odds are pretty low that the aircraft will make an emergency landing and roll to a stop next to a stack of wood and kindling covered by a tarp. It's important to know where to find the dry stuff in a wet environment. Once the fire is lit make sure there's not a big blob of snow on the tree limbs above the fire. Jack London's To Build a Fire comes to mind

I made 2 long cross country trips this Summer on the club's 182. I flew from the FL Panhandle to Cumberland, MD in July and Lincoln, NE in August. I didn't have all that fancy gear. I used my phone's GPS with Avare to navigate and would check the weather ahead on the Weather Channel App on my phone. I enjoyed the adventure. I didn't plan my fuel stops. When I got to a point I sort of I needed fuel, I would find somewhere to land. I try never to land at any airport I've landed at before. I love the adventure of just pointing the plane toward where I'm going and figuring it out. There was significant weather on both trips, but I just kind of figured it out. Like he said, it's no big deal.

Great vid. I have a Cherokee 140/160 and I’m based at X04 Orlando Apopka. Last year became IFR current again and did a similar cross country from X04 to Branson, MO with a couple stops. Nothing like it and as you say, its easy when you break it down. Love your approach to flying, thorough and safe.

Great Video! I am not a pilot, only limited experience in small aircraft as a passenger. But with many cross-country wilderness hikes SOLO, I like the way he is prepared. Always a good idea, along with planning. And, yeah...loved the pepper in the HUMUS with ATC interruptions, lol. Glad I subscribe to your flight channel. Safe travels to ya!

Watching this during quarantine. 3 months passed since my last flight, it was one of my first cross country and the longest so far. Poor planning, bad weather and not being familiar with the mountainous terrain got me in a very scary situation. Luckily I was flying with another more experienced pilot that ended up saving the day. Thank you for this content, it's really helpful to see the right way to plan a flight like you did here. Waiting to implement this lessons as soon as covid19 allows me to!

Josh, I would recommend you getting your ham radio license. There is generally repeater networks within reach in even remote areas that are not in cell phone range. A lightweight handheld transceiver would get you in quick contact with the locals. All the repeater freqs can be preloaded. In addition, I would have a lightweight foldable solar panel to keep batteries charged.

Enjoyed the video. I had many trips up the River to Baton Rouge on a tanker for 35 years.

Used to live in Pensacola. Great to see the beach!

In the pre GPS days flying from Melbourne Victoria Australia to Darwin Northern Territory Australia VFR was a fun 1,700Nm trip. Only about a dozen navigation aids and a whole lot of space between airports, tested your planning and navigation skills. But one of the best experiences you could have. Got shot out of the sky between Katherine and Darwin by a USMC AV8B, well simulated shot down thankfully. Most legs flown were in the 200 to 300Nm range. It is all do able, just got plan well and use your brains. On one flight in the outback arrived at a destination and couldn't find another plane that left from the same departure point before us, they punched the wrong info into their GPS and were over 100Nm off track before realising their mistake.

It's great when you luck into great weather. My longest trip was round trip from NJ to TX to visit family and come back a week later in an Arrow. I couldn't have asked for better weather both ways.

What a great trip. Beautiful scenery. One thing I noticed from San Marcos to final destination: the air seemed very calm. I did not notice the 991 bouncing around at all. I thought that was very unusual at that altitude. Sweet trip in smooth air.

By the time you fight the traffic to drive to and park at a commercial airport, get there earlier enough to make it through security, find your gate, make the flight, get through baggage claim and all that an airline flight becomes an all day flight too. Even if the actual flight time is hours less.
