10 Percent True #14Ask Me Anything - BC Thomas - SR-71 Blackbird Pilot
BC Thomas has more hours in the SR-71 than any other pilot. Note from BC: "JT Vida, my last and best boss, was an RSO and has about 100 more hours than I."
He graciously agreed to be interviewed on 10 Percent True about his time flying the iconic aircraft.
In this 'Ask Me Anything' session, he responds to questions asked by the general public.

Fantastic discussion! I’m a former U-2pilot and was at Beale AFB in the mid-90s when two new SR crews were in the squadron checking out in the T-38. I happen to be a T-38 IP as well so we flew together often. Of course, shortly thereafter, the SR program was cancelled again and the SR crews transferred to the U-2.

Two corrections: at time 6:21, the verbiage is backward, I should have said “from brake release to takeoff…;” and at time 6:46 and 6:49, the word “minutes” should be “seconds.”

That’s very interesting that he brings up Brian Shule and his reputation! Love your comment about your only female listener or only woman who knows it exists! Lol

Hehe. Yes, and the irony is that I think I may have lost this sole female viewer - she hasn't commented in a while!

So the SR never flew at or attained a speed of Mach 3.5 ? When intercepted by the MiG 25 Foxbat that few at Mach 3.5 ..unless such figures of acclaimed Mach figures for both platforms were false ??

The flack attributed to Shul was the fact that he continued his mission, when his main technical objective camera failed enroute, rather than abort and allow the backup aircraft to complete the mission, resulting in unsatisfactory pictures, requiring an additional mission the following day with the associated expenses and dangers involved, not to mention his exceeding the tactical limits of Mach 3.35 for the SR-71, endangering the aircraft and requiring additional maintenance in order for the aircraft to be used, again.
