Just finished the book - an excellent look at flying and fighting in two versions of the Harrier.

‘What was it like on the BOAT’…BOAT! It was a bloody ship! Even we FAA would (should) have picked you up for that?

Retiring the SHAR2 and the GR9/GR9A remain two staggeringly stupid events. We love to retire kit that we've put time and effort in, and finessed to the point where they are really great platforms, and persist with retiring them out. That joint harrier force still today could be supplimenting the very limited F35 force, and offering additional flight options and solutions, and would have covered the entire introduction timeframe of F35 being spun up. They would also have offered the commanders a plane that isn't a broken unservicable white elephant with appalling avail rates.

The huge cost and expense and time and limited sortie rates that we saw in ELLAMY, where one CVS could have taken care of the strike elements with GR9, instead of having Tornados and Typhoons schlep it all over the Mediterranean, proves what a barking decision it was to delete an entire tier of capability in Carrier Strike for 2010. The RAF were very happy to see Harrier's demise and their reaction at Cottesmore in 2010 when I was there on JFH summed it up - "Oh Well". Their manning control totals depended much more on twin engined pointy nosed woosh bang jets that need a small army of maintainers comparatively - just what you need to protect when you've got an SDSR coming up and the Navy wants gucci new carriers and stealth fighters - Harrier and CVS were the sacrificial lambs for our "jam tomorrow".

@@georgemorley1029 1000%. A horrible mistake. I believe we could be using both Shar2 and GR9/GR9A today alongside F35. The low avail rates and low numbers could be offset by Harrier. I believe people persistantly under rate the Harrier.

That is too much logic I’m afraid. Those F-35s are so limited in number and flying hours as to be next to useless.

Hello, Great interview as always! Thank You. Wondering if the SHAR FRS.1 did any practice work with tactical nuclear weapon delivery? Carrying cement 'shapes' or blivets? I think that the entire Harrier force was retired prematurely to say the least. Did the Harrier GR.7/9 have any type of radar to allow for the continuation of AMRAAM use? Cheers!🇨🇦🍺

What does retarded weapons mean?
@twotone1a
@twotone1a 9 месяцев назад
When a "clean" bomb leaves the aircraft its moving at the same speed and trajectory as the plane, falling on a ballistic trajectory as air drag gradually slows it. Dropping from low level the bomb blast could damage/bring down the aircraft that dropped the weapon. Retarding (slowing) the bomb after it leaves the weapon station means the aircraft will be clear before the weapon detonates. The bomb sight and computer solution would be set up to allow for this. Usually fins or a small parachute would deploy on weapons release to slow the bomb.
