Video of my ST Models DG-1000 motorglider. This 79" wingspan model features a pop-up motor pod that retracts for thermal flying. I painted the bottom of the wing with some red Krylon spray paint to make it a little more easy to see at altitude. It flies quite scale like and I think looks great in the air with those winglets! Onboard camera was a GoPro Hero 3+. I also have the very similar ST Model Arcus glider. I believe it performs better than the DG-1000. It can be seen on my video • Flying the ST Model Sc...

I have the sister ship... It's the ST Models Fox glider. It too is an excellent motor glider. For an aerobatic glider it does surprisingly well with thermals. Glad to see you're having as much fun with your DG-1000! The ST Models gliders offer a ton of value for the price!

They are fun gliders for sure. Since this video, I purchased the ST Models Arcus and like the performance better than this DG-1000. Just like your Fox glider... I'm sure they all differ a little bit in flight characteristics and handling. Keep having fun with yours!

austinaeronautics2 You're right about subtle and sometimes not so subtle handling differences between the models. The Fox, for instance, requires a lot of rudder mixing with the ailerons for nice turns. I saw a video about the Arcus. Comes with spoilers and retractable landing gear. Can't beat that for the money! I'm tempted to get it myself. Have fun with yours!

Very nicely done. I also have this model & enjoy flying it in the right conditions.

This ARF glider from ST Model is similar to the Arcus but has a shorter wingspan and no spoilers or retractable landing gear. The Arcus has a 87.5" wingspan compared to the 79.1" DG-1000. I am using a Spektrum DX9 radio and decided not to use the kit supplied RMS control mixer. All my mixing is done just using the transmitter.

on the way from Tower hobbies, flys great, nice field. was it ARF or do your own outfitting? what Tx did you use? was it easy to program the prop motor? are you on RCG? Thanks for the ride!

Is a good glider? I have read more forum...have a problem on engine sistem and on wing or fuselage structure?

Nice flying, im thinking of getting one of these do you recommend it?

I purchased this sailplane more for the novelty of the folding motor pod. I think it looks really cool in the air. That being said, I don't think it performs as well as some other similar planes out there. From what I have seen this is true of most "scale" models. If it is a "scale" model of a real airplane, it rarely performs as well as a sport model of the same size and power. In the case of this DG-1000, the prop will not stow properly 100% of the time. Sometimes it might take an attempt or two to get everything folded back the way it should be. The ARF kit quality leaves a little to be desired... but then again it is about what you would expect for the money. The plane has no nasty habits that I have noticed. You just need to keep it a little faster than some gliders. It is not a "floater." Even on high rates it has a very slow aileron roll, so it is not much of an aerobatic glider either. But... if you want scale looks and a power system a little different than most everything out there... it is a cool airplane.

austinaeronautics2 thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I guess your spending quite a lot of your money on that folding motor design, better of going the conventional way from what you have said. Cheers safe flying

I have one of these I've never flown.. got the tx set up normal....How do I properly set it up like yours with spoiler/ flaps? I'm using the Futaba 7 cap tx w/SLT anylink adapter 2.4 and tactic 6ch rx..... Debating on getting the Hitec Aurora 9x tx....... for all my flyzone txr planes.... Nice video my friend. Regards, Kenny J

Thanks... First you need to make sure that you are NOT using a "Y" harness on the ailerons. Each aileron needs to go in to a separate port of the receiver. Usually one aileron lead will go into the AIL port and the other aileron lead will go into an AUX port. Then on your Transmitter you need to select FLAPERON for the wing type. If your Transmitter has a 3 position flap switch, you make the use of + and - percentages to make UP switch be Spoilers. The MIDDLE switch position is neutral, no flaps... no spoilers. The switch DOWN position will be flaps. A good place to start is by having flaps and spoilers travel 50% of the full aileron travel at full rates. This helps not overtravel the aileron servos when you have flap or spoilers selected and then move the stick to full aileron deflection. If your Transmitter only has a two position flap switch, then just stick with flaps and don't worry about the spoiler function. Once you use the flaps in flight, you might want to feed in some elevator mixing when you deploy your flaps. Just see how your model behaves with power off, full flaps. If it wants to balloon up, feed in some down mixing with your transmitter. Start with small percentages. Usually 2 or 3%. This way when you are on final, power off, and you select flaps... the model will slow but still track level and not pitch up or down. Good luck!

austinaeronautics2 Thank you so much my friend. I may go ahead and test/maiden fly the dg1000 with my current 4 ch set up FUT 7cap tx Or I may just wait until I go back inside the plane and set it up like you suggested to gain spoilers and flaps. Yes, Fut 7 cap tx does have the 3 way switch..... I usually use the ch 5 knob and dial in as much flaps as I desire/need on a couple of my other models. I have never flown gliders so I may just need flaps to slow it down enough to land in a fairly sized area of open grass landings. I'm really researching the Hitec Aurora 9X tx and may bite the bullet and buy it in the next week or two...... To save money, I should find out how to program my JR XP9303 Heli tx to fly airplane... I recently upgraded the tx to the XPS 2.4 ghz system (5 mile range)....... I haven't used the JR enough to really know how to use it..... Several years ago I used it as FM/PPM on a old Shogun V2 400 size heli..... got tired of crashing 90% of the time due to glitching with FM/PPM antenna usage. can't find the blades for that old heli anymore : . ( I do have a Align Trex 600 nitro pro .50 size heli never flown that I need to try with the XPS 2.4 upgrade......

Thanks! The instructions from ST Models recommends the CG at 53mm +-2mm with the motor pod folded back and 46mm +-2mm with the motor pod out and fully extended. I only really checked mine with the pod folded back since the most aft CG is more critical.

I gather from your comment that you are not a big fan of the power to weight ratio of the DG-1000 glider from ST Models? Yeah... It's not overpowered, that is for sure, but it handles the camera just fine. I've actually flown with a GoPro camera on a lot of smaller and less powerful models. I just try not to use the camera case if I'm not going to get it wet. That does save some weight. For this video I just tapped the camera straight to the fuselage.

+austinaeronautics2 No,actually it was just a question.I have no experience with their airplanes as I am a glow rc modeller.but I recently bought the xiaomi yi which rocks and I am in search for an easy and stable airframe to shoot some aerial footage!

I've tried to put cameras on pretty much everything I own that flies! I've done a 360 degree revolving camera, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cOGAP-Rm8kM.html and even mounted the camera forward of the propeller. I'd seen people do this forward looking back camera on jets but never on a prop job. I figured it could be done. You can see that here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JB8AwAZgCJ0.html Good luck with your aerial footage!
