FLYING TO ISRAEL EL AL 787-8 Premium Economy from London to Tel Aviv

Join me as I review El Al's Premium Economy on a redeye flight from London to Tel Aviv. Overall, a pretty rough experience. I wish the ground staff were friendlier because the flight itself was honestly fine, but looking back, this was a terrible experience. I get that security is a serious issue for El Al, I get it, it just wasn't much fun to be treated like a level 3 security threat throughout my entire journey. I had the crew keeping an eye on me, extra security at customs, and security at both airports. I almost missed the Tel Aviv to Athens flight because of all of the security. I had a 2-hour layover scheduled which I thought would be fine, but the lines moved so slowly and the staff had no interest in being productive or helping anyone out. When it was eventually my turn to have my bags and body searched I was yelled at for coming to the airport so close to my departure time, I didn't want to go through the headache of explaining my situation to another member of security so I just let it go. In all fairness, it's my fault for choosing to fly with El Al. I had no reason to be going to Israel, and that's part of the reason why they were on such high alert. If I could go back, I never would've flown with El Al. Yes, I was excited by the concept of being able to get an El Al 787 review on my channel, but at the end of the day, it wasn't worth the stress, anxiety, and time. Maybe I'm being a bit dramatic, and yes, this was brought on by me, but I have absolutely no interest in stepping onboard another El Al aircraft anytime soon. Thanks for watching, let me know what you think in the comments below!

Fun Fact: El Al Planes have Anti Missile defences attached, an undercover cop on every flight, a flare system, and most pilots are ex military.

I hate to break the news..this may have nothing to do with the war and currently i cant leave the country. However I hold an Israeli passport and live in Israel and I"m jewish. Twice have i had my cases opened and gone through in LHR by ELAL security..once i was interrogated on the plane by ELAL security on something that was not my fault..yes it was hard for me but it wont stop me flying ELAL. I understand they must take precautions and now especially in times of war. I feel much safer on ELAL than on other airlines.

Here's my advice as an Israeli-American. If you fly El Al, only fly it IF Tel Aviv is your final destination. DO NOT change planes in Tel Aviv, as they will probably interrogate you, so, only fly to Tel Aviv if you are visiting Israel and if Tel Aviv is your final destination

I fly El Al every year. Easyjet is OK but you get a better service and more comfortable seat on El Al. Flew the Retroliner (Rehovot) last year.

There are many nonstop flights a day between the various London airports and Athens. That would've been smarter IMO

If you are flying to El Al and your final destination is Tel Aviv, I strongly suggest bringing physical documents that indicate your purpose of visit to that country. That will be helpful when you come in contact with their security staff before boarding in. Expect to be questioned reasonably for everyone's safety, and at the same time, unpleasantly.

Since you’re a very frequent flyer, I’m surprised that you aren’t aware that El Al is a prime target for terrorists. Their security procedures aren’t set up to be nice to you; they’re there for your safety. I’ve flown to Israel many times on various airlines. El Al can be rude and intrusive; the other airlines smile and do a perfunctory quick check. Guess who I feel safer on?

and given how tight El Al security is, not sure why anyone would book what they admit is an unusual itinerary and then act surprised

Actually I was hoping for more commentary on the Premium Economy experience. (I just bought a Premium Economy ticket on Delta that is operated by El Al.) El Al is known for its persnickety security - Israel got tired of having its planes hijacked back in the 70's and so, yeah, this is what you get even for a normal flight into TLV. What *you* did is so unusual that it probably freaked them out completely. Anyway I did appreciate the video, so thanks.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. It’s not an airline I can avail myself of flying out of Sydney (AU). I wonder if you were flying on a different passport, if there might have been issues undertaking that flight. As you see to be holding a blue passport, that may have made it possible, even though you were given the third degree in LHR. happy continues flying.

Isn't it faster to fly nonstop? Seems somewhat inconvenient backtracking. I assume this was before October 7th. Food looks great. I always had good meals on EL AL. Flew them in 1962 the first time on a Boeing 720B. I regret never taken a Bristol Brittania. I had a picture of my grandmother in front of an EL AL Boeing Curtiss C46 taken in 1950 going to Cyprus. One does not think of EL AL as being a connecting airline or that Ben Gurion is a connecting hub. Glad to hear it though.

Very helpful! I’m planning trip ATL/TLV/ATL as Delta Platinum Medallion. Since DL has temporarily suspended TLV svc they are Code Sharing with LY via JFK or BOS. I’m thinking Business outbound (night) and Premium on return (day). Interestingly, might be less expensive to buy the ELAL & Delta tickets separately.

I’ve flown there 16 times - If you have a connecting flight from Europe - or the Middle East - yes they are likely going to profile you - I got detained for an hour in Rome several years back - (they assured me I would not miss my flight 😉) and believe me they have all the info on you before they even ask - if it’s a direct flight from NYC or some place they fly direct from- in the US your not going to get hammered As bad -

Just a weird idea for the future: Air Serbia , booking directly. And bidding for the business class upgrade. They do LHR and ATH as well. And no interrogations at check inn. Only 1 remark : “ you have acces to the business lounge”

El Al has always had extra tight security (and for a damn good reason). You book what you admit is an unusual itinerary, then act surprised when they get suspicious and interrogate you? Really? BTW, if you weren't going to stay in Israel, you should have just booked a direct flight from London to Athens

El Al uses profiling actively. I am Jewish, but grew up in Europe in a city without an established Jewish community, so I often have to tell security about my family, which Jewish holidays we celebrate etc. It does feel intrusive, but I guess it is done for a reason.

I understand the need for heightened security, but why does the Israeli government allow El Al to sell such connecting flights but then become suspicious of every passenger that takes up the offer? Take such routes off GDS ffs.

My friends that flew El Al on connecting flights were all interrogated to varying degrees and everyone wondered why they sell those flights but seem so rough and unwelcoming with those passengers. This was all before the current conflict.

I have a photo of myself climbing the air stairs Ben Gurion to a TWA 747 in 1984. The serial # was 17119, easily seen from the stairs. Ring a bell? It eventually became TWA 800. I didn’t notice it until decades later when I was digitizing old slides.

Several of my friends that flew with El Al on connecting flights were interrogated by security for no apparent reason, and they weren't even going to Tel Aviv. Everyone I know that has flown with them that does not hold an Israeli passport complained about rough handling and poor treatment on the ground. I think your experience is probably not unique and they are hypersensitive when it comes to security.
