Man, the things we put our families through so we can keep our flying dreams alive!! I hope I don't put mine off GA flying..... it's such an adventure as the PIC, but it's often a bunch of waiting around and uncertainty for the kids and their mama. I wouldn't change it for anything though. Great video!

I d have for sure appreciated this trip too 🥰 I really like your pragmatic way of considering the risks, the best options in case of emergencies...etc to plan ypur route up to the North. Great aviator skills prooving your huge experience with flying! Take care guys. Do you apply any kind of filter on top of your videos? It s always more yellowish compared to other videos I usually look at. I like also the fact that you double check the restricted area being cold. Glad to watch the 2nd half of your trip to the northwest. It looked like you all had a fun time at The Gorge. Wenatchee is my "home territory". My dad watched Clyde Pangborn crash land in Wenatchee after being the 1st to cross the Pacific. POI; Pangborn was born just up the river past Lake Chelan (Bridgeport). Next time you get to the northwest - fly 30 miles north of Wentchee and you will be in the "Switzerland of America" Lake Chelan area (glacier cut through the North Cascades Wilderness Area and a very popular playground for the area. And of course, a visit to the northwest should include the San Juan Islands. I have flown the southern Cal to Washington route no less than 160 times. I need not tell you that you made the correct decision staying inland on the way north - even though the smoke was a threat. The odds of better weather east of the Cascades during spring and summer would probably be in the high 90 percent. I can't tell you how many times I have seen clear skies 5 miles from the coastline only to see the summer fog never lift on the coastline. Red Bluff is my normal fuel stop when heading south - occasionally will stop in Montague - depending on fuel needs or Ashland. Flying these kind of cross country flights is what flying "is all about" in my book. They are challenging, extremely satisfying and just fun, especially when done in the safe hands like yourself!

@@SoCalFlyingMonkey I used to live and work in Orange county. We would fly back north to vacation and visit family(Lake Chelan) at least once every year since after 1970; had purchased a new 1969 PA28 180 D. In 1980 moved back to Seattle area, but kept a condo in Oceanside Ca. We just sold the condo last year. After retirement in the 90’s we spent winters in Oceanside (flying back and forth in a newer 78 Archer II. It seems That we have had a lifetime of flying north and south. We now fly to Mesa to visit family (just returned in April). My son has been an instructor since early 90’s. I have never been far from aviation. The pilot conducting the practice approach to RWY33 did not need to conduct the missed approach and turnout over the runway. Once he knew you were landing RWY15, he could have broken the approach off anytime after he passed the FAF and it still would have counted. See FAA InFO 15012, fn6 - "During simulated instrument flight in an aircraft, it may be necessary to deviate from the final approach segment for safety reasons (e.g., in order to avoid traffic or other hazards). In these cases, the pilot may still log the IAP, provided the aircraft has passed the final approach fix (FAF)." Enjoyed the video.

G,day from Sydney Australia. That was a good film and my takeaways; are * Firstly, very wise having the supplemental oxygen. * Flying to smoke atmospheric conditions....? I think both humans and combustion engines are better with clean air. Albeit no PIREPS or FBO reports. Looking forward to seeing more flying and the plane looks great. 🌏🇦🇺
@hempelcx
@hempelcx 2 года назад
No significant issue for the plane with smoke in the air, other than maybe needing to clean/replace air filters. And apart from very thick smoke (close to the fires), healthy people tend to react more due to psychosomatic effects than actual medical concern. In other words, if the pilot and passengers are up for it then I have no issue flying through light smoke. Obviously it's not ideal, but neither is flying through light-moderate turbulence or experiencing G's, and we do all of that as well (again, only if pilot and passengers are up for it.) It's really hard to gauge from the video, especially since it's been color graded, but I didn't see any smoke that wouldn't be legal to fly through VFR (3sm visibility). That SFM went IFR and generally around or above the smoke added to the safety margin. All seemed quite reasonable to me.

glad you enjoyed the video. I do think it's a good idea to change the air filter after flying through smoke but in light smoke like this there is really no issue with the engine.

I'm not a Dave Matthews fan, I primarily listen to the Great American Songbook, so a lot of stuff from a long time ago. However, your trip seems to have been aweseome. I want to comment on something else. Most flying channels don't cover other than the pilot, usually. Kevin and Jaime did a little bit on 310 Pilot, but seeing your youngest getting sick, and then your wife feeling it after the 360 around the Gorge I think are important parts of the video, because that is what happens with non-pilots in the airplane. You don't usually see that on the airlines since it's pressurized, usually straight and level, air conditioned, climate controlled bus ride. General aviation is different. I'm also glad to see that you got your Mountain High O2 system, especially if you're going to be using 1BW for long distance travel. Is that a Turbo Six, or just a standard, normally aspirated engine? You keep this up, you're going to need to find a Malibu! LOL Thanks for sharing this video.

It's not a turbo, just a NA IO540 engine. Turbo would be nice! :)

I tried that boost oxygen - didn't make my oxygen saturation levels move at all
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 2 года назад
It certainly won't sustain it unless you keep on it, which is really impractical for many reasons during a flight. It definitely raises my levels but we now have a proper system so we don't use the cans anymore.

Quick question, why is oxygen needed? Non flyer hear, want to fly a king air in the future
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 2 года назад
To oversimplify, the air is “thinner” higher up and the body can’t deliver oxygen to the tissues as efficiently. Can lead to a condition called Hypoxia which can be deadly for pilots. Check out my video about being Trapped Above the Wildfires as I explain it in that video.

I noticed you had an SPO2 monitor, the pulse oximeter will not be able to differentiate between oxygen and carbon monoxide therefore is not accurate if your are trying to monitor oxygen levels in a smoke cloud. Simply, you could be hypoxic but show high levels with the spo2 because it is picking up carbon monoxide.
@SoCalFlyingMonkey

That’s a good point. I also have a digital carbon monoxide detector in the cabin that alarms with any CO levels.

Is that the think from shark tank. Did he include pilots using it on his sales pitch cause that makes a lot of sense. Even more so than athletes.

That's the great thing about Dave, it seems he's always got a few amazing guests to come on and jam. I LOVE when Robert Randolph plays with them. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tenPRs-MUXA.html Around 5:20 is just awesome

I’m trying to wrap my head around this. So your going to watch the same band play the same show 3 nights in a row? Isn’t that like going to see the same move 3 nights in a row or thereabouts?
@SoCalFlyingMonkey
@SoCalFlyingMonkey 2 года назад
They play a different set every night of the tour, drawing from a huge catalogue of music. And each performance is different, with different solos, guests, etc. The songs also evolve over the years quite a bit. So this year's version will be different than the last. Seeing them at a venue on a 3 night stand you will usually see not even one repeated song and they will break out some surprises they havent even played at all during the tour.

@@SoCalFlyingMonkey ah gotcha. Didn’t know the logistics. Thought it was the same show every night for a completely different crowd

The plane that was doing the practice IFR approach should not have taken priority over you, in my opinion, you were in front closer to landing, they should have let you come in first especially at an uncontrolled airport. IFR does not take priority over VFR, at least in Canada and certainly not when on a practice approach. They created increased risk for you and them in this situation.
@hempelcx
@hempelcx 2 года назад
That's true, but it would be a much bigger inconvenience to break off the practice approach and vector back around to try it again than it was for SFM to extend his downwind. He didn't have to do that, but it was courteous and I'm sure much appreciated.
