For some flying is merely transportation. For others like us, it’s an improbable endeavor that so often feels like magic. A great privilege and responsibility that opens the door to amazing adventure. An excuse for spending time with friends and family. A reason to get up and go somewhere. We know it’s not about where. We know the journey is the destination. #1029017
The bang for buck with Dynon is insane compared to Garmin. Spending 40K with Dynon will give a powerful IFR set up installed. 60K on Garmin will only give you the parts. You'll have to spend another 40K to install it.
Solid video. Very relatable. In our pursuit to become perfect pilots, that ever unachievable goal, pride can get in the way of sharing our mistakes. Thank you. I really appreciate how willing you are to use your experiences as a tool to teach the rest of us. Quickly becoming my favorite aviation channel.
Just got a fully equipped Dynon/Avidyne Seneca III. This video definitely helped me get up to speed on it even though I can see it was a few software versions behind now. Thanks for the info!
I'm in my mid-50 and have been dreaming of getting my private pilot's license for thirty years. $15k-$20k to complete the course is out of my reach. I would love to use my master's in HR to work for a company that offers flying lessons. If you hear of such a company, let me know. 😊
GREAT video! Thanks for sharing something personal and extremely beautiful that you and your family do together. I pray you have thousands of safe flights and a lifetime of enjoyment together.
Good video About xwings I use Decrab, Is not , Crab angle ,or Sideslip, Is combinatión of the las 2, but you land with LG level, I used from Pitts to Airbus 320, also on DC-3, C-46, and DC-6 in all been Captain. And for a Glide 3°, descend , you must loose 300' x 1 NM, and for that Is G/Speed , d ivide by 2 example 140/2=70, so you add a 0 that Is 700/minute, of descend, well shortly I Will have Manual where I talk about that, and more. "Happy Landings"
its an angle of attack indicator that is part of the Dynon HDX system. But there are ones like you describe which are laser based landing height systems that call out 50 feet, 10 feet, 5 feet....landingheight.com/
I got obsessed over motorcycle, and got my endorsement. I dont own a bike. I obsessed over getting my ppl. I dont see the point. For me, i make 77k a year and flying seems like a hobby rather than an investment/asset...what wpuld i do with it? Can i make money with it? Im torn
I am a VFR only pilot and fly in northern and central CA. Mostly uncontrolled airports. I want to learn the best route from Bakersfield to Long Beach Daugherty field. Any suggestions? I’ll probably hire my CFI to help plan and fly it the first time.
You could fly over the grapevine into the Santa Clarita Valley and then descend to 5500 and pick up the coastal route over LAX- it's published with the LA area TAC. Its a simple procedure and you talk to SoCal during it. after LAX they would give you a descent and hand you off to Long Beach. def talk to your CFI and look at that charted procedure.
Flight planning is the best way to navigate turbulence. If there is no way to avoid it, flying close to gross and slow down is the best you can do and for the love of all things, turn off your autopilot!
Hi. I have a dog about the size of your dog Maltese Shih Tzu measuring 13" around head under chin over ears. I don't know if the small size is best in the 4 paws aviation ear muffs or the medium. 13" is Max measurement for small and minimum measurement for medium. What size did you get and was your dogs measurement similar/ less or more? Can you tell me the dimensions of the out shell and inner space for the ear? I emailed the company but as yet I haven't heard anything yet. I'd like to get them asap. Thank so much if you can help.
Holy shit you can see the outside through the door seal during the closeup on his face angle shots… I know it’s not a pressurized plane but idk why I thought planes would be as tight as cars around the door jams… that’s wild!!
I have been doing landings at Sedona through flight simulator and I always have to do at least one go around. I am always coming in high but thought it was just me and my limited visibility. Glad to see real life is not that different. I keep thinking of my instructor so many years ago saying “there is no shame in doing a go around.”
Thank you for your efforts. In this case since private businesses are partially involved this publicity may help. In general though where government is involved (FAA, IRS, FBI, Congress, etc) if no funding is cut or no one goes to jail then nothing will ever change. (Many people don't want to hear that.)
Did you do any recurrent training/proficiency flying during those 5 months? If not, anything you would've done differently? I am about to receive my engine back from overhaul and have the first break-in test flight in a couple weeks.
Considering the costs involved on these aircraft engines, I'd be breaking mine in on an engine dyno. Full day's dyno time is about $1500 around me, you can run it for 5-6 hours and do all the checks you need to do. Considering you paid $20K for the teardown and service from what I remember in the last video, seems like a relatively minor additional cost. Plus something like a Supertech dyno is going to have computerized programs for breaking in the piston rings. Just my $0.02. I am not an aircraft owner so take it with a grain of salt.
Nothing was done to the cylinders so they didn’t need to be broken in. No mineral oil, no full power operation for 10 hours etc… just the cam and lifters.
This is awesome, stumbled on your channel while looking to see how much aircraft cost (my son is 15, I'm hoping he'll buy a plane and fly me from Michigan to Florida in the winter. :) Would you be willing to shore how much the upgrades cost you?
what should i have done differently? more runups, more high speed taxis? more orbits around the airport? more time on the engine before the trip? more approaches before the trip? Acknowledging the time pressure is different than actually rushing through a process. I dont think anything was actually rushed or corners cut. But maybe Im missing something?
What we don't mention here is the fact that if you don't own an aircraft, FBO's in my area are getting $180.00 HR!!! C172 Garmin G1000 , Thats bullshit anyway you wanna look at it. I have had my PPL for 40yrs and I'm NOT paying this amount! Good luck all!
I can’t tell if it’s just dramatized for viewership or not but it seems a little foolish to be rushing the process. I believe they’re doing it by the book but always start to feel nervous when pilots seem to be in a hurry or pressured to make a trip.
There was time pressure but I certainly did not rush it. I followed all the guidance I could find on this process and did it the most cautious way, taking time to remove the cowl after high speed taxis, etc etc. If I had rushed it I would have done high speed taxis on the wet runway...or done a runup and said all good let's fly...or started to get current again as soon as I took off the first time... I really did it step by step, and then not only flew 5-10 hours on the engine before the trip but also got totally IFR current again. There was definitely a ticking clock to get it done in time for the trip, but I felt ok defining that external pressure and being aware of it throughout the whole process asking myself if I would be making the same decisions with or without that pressure. The only decision I made that was influenced by that was deciding to buy an overhauled fuel pump rather than send mine out and wait for it to be overhauled. That cam with no added risk but certainly with added cost!
@@SoCalFlyingMonkey really appreciate the response. I’ve seen the majority of your videos and you always emphasize the safety aspect and research that goes into your flights so I had confidence but I think all pilots have that internal red flag that pops up when tight timelines are mentioned. Especially with major maintenance involved. Great videos and high quality though. Really enjoy the content! 👍🏻
Excellent video! I’m considering an HDX or AFS6600 and Avidyne 540 for “my one day to be completed” experimental RV-10. Would love to get your advice and recommendations! Also, how do you incorporate/use ForeFlight which is in the video? Are you still using ForeFlight? Thanks!
