We will be going over FM synthesis programming concepts that apply to all FM synths and applying them specifically to the Elektron Digitone. Watch if you are curious about how FM works and how to program FM synthesizer sounds, or if you have a Digitone and want to learn more about how its synthesis works. The Digitone also has some unique features that most FM synthesizers don't have for shaping sounds. Frequency modulation synthesis or FM often feels complicated but if looked at from the right perspective it can be more easily understood.

easiest way to get to the default sound is holding a track button and pressing Clear (Play button)

Also, if you want some of the extra settings adjusted on clear, you can save an INIT preset. For instance, if I'm wanting to make a bass sound, I have INIT BASS preset which lowers the octave by -1, along with has a 100 Filter Track.

This is about the best representation of FM synthesis in real time. I'm building/designing my own 4 operator synth and this is good for a visualization of the parameters I need to implement in a 16knob configuration. The real world has limited inputs. Seeing how the digital elegantly controls menu diving vs real world control is awesome. This video is as long as a damn Spiderman movie and I'm here for it. Thank you!!!!!!!!

Best way to approach FM is with the Humble Audio Quad Operator! PCA sells them!! No menu diving. It’s a hands on FM8 (but 4 operators and needs external envelopes etc)

I think a closer option for hands on fm is the twisted electrons MegaFM. it is based on the sega genesis chip, is 12 voice, and has all the necessary stuff built in for 4 op fm. I think the digitone still has it beat though, the MegaFM has some downsides that i think make it hard to choose over the digitone.

Hey, I totally feel like I have to take back my earlier comment. I’ve been going balls deep in FM, and I just gotta say that you can also get chorusing but having two operators slightly detuned modulating the carrier. Idk why it works but it does, you’re right and I’m wrong. The math and such on FM synth stuff is crazy and above me. I was probably just high and mad for no reason. I needed help with the algorithms and such as I was coming from the OPsix, which uses the DX algorithms where there are fixed carriers and modulators (except the user Algorithm)

'can you talk about syn2 page', 'can you talk about filter page', blabla - what do you think, the guy will forget to talk about filter page if you won't ask him to do it??? The man did a good job explaining the instrument, but the host did a terrible job letting him do it at his own pace and in order HE feels is correct...

Dude really doesn’t know FM algorithms very well. When talking about the two modulators on one carrier he said this was for chorusing sounds. I immediately stopped watching. The usual algorithm for the chorusing/beating/detune sound is 2 carriers 1 modulator, slight difference in frequency (pitch) for the operators (like a fine tune difference of 6-12 cents). Mad fame has some great tutorials for the DX7 that you can draw from to understand making patches on other fm synths

Hey thanks for the Mad Fame tip. FM makes my head hurt and the Digitone is far from my first rodeo. It's not even my first FM synth and it's certainly easier than when I owned a DX100. I'm still turning knobs and not understanding just why they sound like they do though.

You have to turn a knob like 50 times to do the most basic sound modification. So many pages! I honestly think a DX is easier to edit. Also.. wtf is Op A, B1, B2, C? Why not 1, 2, 3, 4? The sound quality is nothing special compared to vintage DX.

FYI, I too think FM systhesis can be explained a lot better : see ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x2Ic9upij-U.html (demo by loopop). The Digitone is actually quite easy and fun to program (and definitely easier than a DX!). Cheers!

@@sirsynth225 Thank you, I saw that video months ago. I still find it hard to edit with the knobs away from the sceen, too many screens and knob turns, etc. I have no problem with FM programming, I have DX7 mk1, DX5, DX-100, TX81z, Nord Modular G2, and many others. Something like the G2 is a dream to program, and way more complex than the Digitone. But also something like a DX5, you have so many buttons and a big screen that you can see so many parameters at the same time. And sound quality is so so so much better. Sorry I don´t want to troll, I´m just giving my honest opinion.

@@javierzubizarreta2933 Can you describe what you're missing from the sound of the Digitone compared to your yamahas? I own the Digitone and like it a lot, but listening to some yamaha reface dx demos, I thought there is something to the yamaha fm sound. Less clinical or something...
