This tutorial was very helpful. Free motion is still difficult for me. Rob makes it look so easy. I love the hints to keep from puckering when quilting the salad bowl.
Rob, thank you so much for your enthusiastic efforts at encouraging us to FMQ. I've been kinda dancing around the idea for years, watching tutorials, getting one-on-one instruction from the local sewing shop, and experimenting on my own with small quilt sandwiches, but it was this particular tutorial of yours that finally gave me the confidence to actually try quilting a real quilt (throw-sized). It turned out beautifully and it was fun. I can't wait to do another one!
I just did my first pieces of fmq the other day in the form of a couple of potholders. A lot of the inspiration and courage to actually try it out comes from you and your videos, so thank you! It was super fun! I might have to do a lot more of it!
Thanks Rob, this helps make the whole quilting idea a lot less scary to us that haven't done it before! Just looking at a quilt that has been all quilted seems so complicated and scary. Breaking it down like this is so helpful!
Very good tutorial. I really liked your swirl design. And, I did not realize you are suppose to do your design work and then come back and do your overall 'fill'. I have been trying to do it all at one time. Your method would be much easier to manage! I really enjoy your videos; this is one of the best. Thanks.
Such fantastic energy and creativity! Thanks so much for inspiring me! Great use of color on your quilts too. 👍🏻. Would love to see another video with you and your daughter too. Happy 🏄🏼 and sewing!
What a great addition to your FMQ series - Thank you! The way you explained how to avoid the ripple was excellent & suddenly a lot of things clicked for me. I've been hesitant to really dig in with FMQ but now I think I'm really ready to go :)
Thank you for this! I love that you explained about that possible bunching of fabric! I always thought that happened to me because I didn't baste properly. Now I have the confidence to work with it, and not despair about my incompetence!
Great hints!! I love your energy level; it's very inspiring! It's funny but I find my head and eyes moving with your turns as if I'm doing the quilting myself - ha!
That was really helpful thanks! I haven't patchworked or quilted since my early 20's, my son's grandma, great aunt and aunt taught me a huge amount. So having good refresher lessons is very helpful!
Love this tutorial! Working on my second quilt project - a king size bed quilt (YIKES!) that I plan to quilt myself (ANOTHER YIKES!) and found this extremely helpful. Plan to use bowls as base plan. Thanks for a great idea!
Thank you, thank you! I have a quilt with a very busy pattern and was wondering how to quilt it. Love your design - I too have bowls - no need to buy a template. Fantastic!
Thanks for another great video Rob! I'd love to try this, but so far I've only pieced a few quilt tops and I'm kinda looking doubtfully at my sewing machine as I don't have the confidence to approach something on this scale this yet. :( I think I'd be more confident moving placements around, so if I screw it up I've not ruined a quilt top. I'd find it really helpful if you made a video demonstrating say, four different designs that would be suitable for placemats. I think I'd like to be more confident on FMQ before I tackle moving larger pieces of material around to do it. Love your videos, the bright colors and your designs are really inspiring! Thanks for all your videos in 2016, can't wait to see what you bring us in 2017! Keep up the good work! :)
So glad you liked it, Liz! It's always a good idea to start small (you can even use scraps at first) and work your way up to bigger projects. I've linked below to my FMQ playlist showing several different designs that you might like to try out. :) ru-vid.com/group/PL3KqX-pov7lKpy6f2BP2oJxELoKmCMzX8
Wonderful tutorial! I'm getting ready to try FMQ. So if you have an overall design, is it ok to quilt with the backing on top like you were showing in the tutorial? I wasn't sure if you were just doing that to show the design better. Also, it seems like the backing would show your design markings better. Do you have a favorite marking pencil that you use?
Thanks Rob your tutorials are very easy to follow. My problem is that while free motion quilting I end up with "eyelash" looking bobbin thread on the underside of the project. Most often it happens during swirls and circles. Can you address this in the future? I don't want to mess with the bobbin tension if I don't have to, am I going too fast? What makes the bobbin do this? Thanks! Cindy
Hi Cindy!! I have had this problem in the past, and what I was doing was going to too fast around the curves. I was taught fast feet, slow hands! Hope this helps!!
Hey Cindy! I have a few tutorials that I think you'll find helpful with this! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YSSHUjOsVUw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q2bffXf4PQU.html
On the pinwheel quilt where you used the white thread, what color do you wish you had used? I'm wondering if you would have matched one of the greens or with something very contrasting? Such as orange or red?
I had posted this on another board Kathy Traft1 week agoHello Rob First I want to say I just love your videos, I love the energy and excitement you put in to them. You make them fun fun fun.....till your daddy takes your T-Bird away..(could resist) anyhoo I have a question I don't think I have ever heard you address this...When you free motion quilt do you use your foot pedal to control your speed or the dials on the machine, I was wondering which is better using the foot pedal or the automatic start and slide speed control?
thanks Rob I will try that!! I use both ways sometimes I feel I have more control with the foot but I like the way I can set the speed on the start button as I can get a bit of a lead foot..lol
Hey Patti! I explain the different types of FMQ Feet here:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TK6qpezqoVo.html I'd suggest checking with your dealer to find out which is best for your particular machine. I hope this helps!
yes you explain but not a number for the foot,,,,,and i just checked the babylock site and cant even find a picture for it,,,,can you at least tell me what it is called
