Always listening to here how the pond and dam runway is doing. I thought I heard you say stay tuned for pond update. It might be time to do a video or a short on the pond project. Really proud of the way that you have made this hobby achievable for me. As well as my wife being an RC flyer as well. We are both noobs but enjoy flying just about every day. Thanks so much, and we have footage for the dam build ;) and we'll share it at some point, but they ARE back, and should be showing up for their 3rd day back at work. My excavator and his son are working for about 2-3 weeks and they're supposed to be DONE...but we'll see. To the novice, like me, it seems like there's so much to be done, but good-lordy-lord, they can get a lotta dirt moved in 6-7 hours of actual work!!! Can't wait to share. We WILL. Don't worry ;)

The bolt on prop adapter can be replaced if bent, better than replacing a bent motor shaft with a collet type adapter setup. Your model seemed to have a bit excess down-thrust. Reducing weight of battery pack seemed to help get level flight. My Sig 1/6 scale J-3 flies better with aileron-rudder mix. Cub-like designs can have "adverse yaw" tendencies, need rudder/aileron coordination or differential ailerons ( up motion but little down motion). Differential requires 2 aileron channels. Cubs are not really stable "trainers" they require piloting.

That’s a THREE cell? Along with some of the other FMS planes I’ve seen you flying (and that one you let me fly), it makes me believe that FMS has seriously figured out power trains! (The first one I noticed was the 1400 P-40, which ROCKS, especially when compared with their previous 3 blade 1400mm fighters- I got those motors to install in them, like the FW-190 and Hellcat. Oh yeah!)

great flying and teaching. i didnt know you could couple controls electronically on the radio, i know that real planes can have mechanical coupling, so thats all i had considered. youre teaching a lot of new people about stuff that they normally wouldnt hear about for awhile. its cool that youre explaining that. but have you heard of differential aileron? each aileron has more up travel than down travel, that helps with adverse yaw. another one is " frise aileron", where the aileron has its leading edge ahead of the hinge line, and protrudes and creates drag as the aileron goes up. i dont know if any rc have these, i just have the two volantex mustangs. i want to add flaps and retracts robbie, of the 72nd comment, and 269th like division.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 10 дней назад
yes, differential is a way of doing this, but you have to separate each aileron to their own channel, thus you'd be using up another channel. It CAN help too, so might be worth trying, and it's easy to do IF you don't mind giving up the channel. If you want to try it out, we've used differential before, but it's usually not a big deal...although, admittedly, this plane NEEDED some attention to get it flying, and the way I suggested correcting for the terrible coupling tendencies is pretty easy and radially available on most Transmitter systems, not necessarily JUST on Spektrum ;) Also, if you separate out the Ailerons, you can setup flapperons, and/or spoilerons. If you're curious, keep watching, can't spend the time to explain it here on a comment, but we've talked extensively for hours and hours about this too, if you're curious. Watching our Unbox, Build, Radio Setup is where it's at for a newer or returning to the hobby, pilot...so we're glad to help!

Hey Brian, I got my J-3 last summer. Our club is a grass strip, so I replaced the little tires with eflite Timber tires for grass ops. I flew it with the FMS stabilizer and felt that I wasn’t getting good control authority in SAFE mode, so I took the stabilizer and my AR620 receiver out and replaced them with an AR630 receiver. Not good! I experienced the wankiness you probably on steroids, complete with crashes. I wound up pushing the expo on the rudder to about 80% or 90%. It helped, but still feels like a handful. Thank you, I will try 1300 mah batteries and and add the mixes you suggest! Doug Coates, Bristol, RI

GOOD, now I don't feel so bad. Let me know if my "fix" takes care of your issues too. It was WAY worse than I would have every expected, and I felt like I "took the plane from the grave" with this little TINY fix. Thanks for the feedback, and hope to hear from you soon as to what you figure out.

@@BrianPhillipsRC I am a private pilot with an instrument rating and owned a Piper Cherokee for almost 20 years. I no longer fly full scale. I started the rc hobby during Covid and this will be my 4th year. To be honest I fly in SAFE mode all the time because I have not felt comfortable not. I agree with how you felt the plane should be an amazing flyer and beat up on myself when things went badly. I damaged everything you did with the exception of the prop shaft and landing gear. After I removed the reflex, I couldn’t take off with getting into trouble! LOL! Now I know! Thank you again. 😎

On mine I didn't have to do anything for it to fly great and really agile. All with a 3s 2200mAh. Tight battery fit but it flies fine. The small wheels thou, well that is not for grass ops. In the end I prefer the FMS PA-18 1300mm as it handles almost perfect and with the large wheels grass is great.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 13 дней назад
Me too. The PA-18 1.7m is AMAZING. I wonder why mine was so dang wonky??? I had another guy report his was that way too. Wonder if there's a weird TWIST in the wing or something else strange?

@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 10 дней назад
I did it in this video, so hope you'll see what I did and emulate it closely to get back in the air. If you over-bend it, it may break, and it has to be pretty dang close to perfect, so take your time. If you have to dismount the motor to make the correction, put the shat into a drill chuck and spin it to see if it's straight before going through the trouble of remounting the motor. Good luck! P.S. that 750mm Volantex Mustang is HARD TO FLY. I would highly encourage you to consider a 1.2m P-51 Mustang from Eflite - you will be AMAZED at how much better a plane it is. If you need SMALL, but want a BIG plane feel, get the UMX P-51 - you will LOVE it compared to that 750mm, nearly impossible to fly disaster. I know from experience. I've flown a number of the 750mm P-51's and all of them sucked BADDDDDD. bprc.me/P51

Have you tried using the aileron differential? That can sometimes be very helpful when planes have too much adverse yaw.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 12 дней назад
I haven't and didn't want to waste the channel to split out the Ailerons, BUT we could do that - Good point. That being said, given this is fixed gear AND ailerons only, it wouldn't be hard to setup. Should have enough channels. Biggest issue with needing differential, is that you don't KNOW you need it until it's all setup and working poorly...our mix can be added after the build is done, and you've come to the realization there might be an issue.
@Coops777
@Coops777 13 дней назад
Hi Brian and Megan. I really enjoy your very detailed videos. Just a thought about the cub. If it is anything like the FMS PA18, it will be very well built but also very heavy for its size. I think the wing loading will be considerably higher in proportion to the real thing. Are the wings solid foam? I'm taking a bet they are. I have a hobby zone carbon cub (has lots of thick foam) which I consider too heavy for its size and, while it's a ton of fun, is disappointing next to my full sized Legend AL3 Cub when you consider gliding without power on a 3S 2200. The full sized cub has Frise Ailerons to counter the unfortunate amount of adverse yaw resulting from the design of the plane. Well done with putting in the mixes.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 12 дней назад
I wonder why they don't engineer that Frise Ailerons into this wing? This model is super similar in quality to the PA-18 of both 1.3m and 1.7m sizes, but the PA-18 comes out of the box wanting to fly amazing...this one, at least in our experience, not so much...which weirded me out to no end! I think you're onto something with the higher than expected wing loading. That's maybe why the smaller 1300mAh 3S made such a big difference, then the mixes really REFINED it back into good flying behaviors. Another commenter suggested adding DIFFERENTIAL, which I hadn't considered, since I don't want to waste the channel, BUT it would be pretty easy to change over to that configuration. We have the channels, but if I want to make mods, I'd want to also plop in some inboard flaps. I just love SLOWING down planes. Especially these ones that you KNOW would be just creeping by in real life...I know, it's weird that I LOVE slow in RC planes. I want slow so you can look and see everything working. I want slow, since it's easier to fly. I want slow to savor it as I fly by. I want slow for extra greasy landings. I want slow for better gear performance and easier on the air frame... I'm always amazed how many people aren't into slow - but then I see professional pilots... at or near 100% throttle the whole flight. It showcases most planes nicely, but I want slow ;)
@Coops777
@Coops777 12 дней назад
@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks so much for your reply. I totally get where youre coming from. Slow is fun and I think you learn more from it too, as you can really see how the aircraft responds to inputs. When its fast, you can barely see whats going on. Thats why the majority of my models are balsa unlimited aerobatic ones. My favourite is my Precision Aerobatics Extra 260. Runs on 3S 2200mA. They have super light wing loading and love to float and glide. Much more like a full sized manned aircraft (well, at least my cub lol). They are also generally very well behaved and respond very precisely to inputs without much coupling or weird yaw.
