This was a huge help after purchasing my first Egyptian FN49. Thanks man!

Oh cool, glad it helped! There are a few other FN-49 videos on the channel if you haven't checked them out already and more to come. 👍

If I had a time machine back to the 80's, buying one of these would be the first things I would do.

Yeah that would be nice!

I brought mine home a couple weeks ago, still coated in cosmoline from Century in the 80s and detail stripped it to get the gunk off of all the small parts. Having watched your videos on the rifle helped a lot. Just wanted to say thanks!

Perfect! Wish this was around a couple years back when i disassembled mine and attempted an ignorant reassembly.

Well at least now there is no more ignorant reassembly.

I’d love to see a cleaning training film for the SAFN! Yours has a beautiful patina
@HistoryinFirearms
@HistoryinFirearms Год назад
What would you like to see covered in that? I've generally steered away from cleaning videos as not all the manuals cover this, and everyone seems to have their own procedures.

@@HistoryinFirearms Hmm yeah I understand. I just really enjoy the aesthetic of your videos, I enjoy seeing that Egyptian SAFN, and I thought a cleaning video would really wrap this up nicely. So not really sure what I expected to see covered, besides just more content with that cool gun. (also - thanks for confirming English web slings are appropriate for this gun ! I was wondering, especially with the FAL lineage)

@@zebracherub I will be doing a cleaning kit video at some point. I'm still looking for some pieces, though. I haven't ruled out cleaning videos yet so we'll see. Egypt, Belgium and others used the web sling. The Belgium ones were OD green.

Many machined parts. This is where the M1 beats the FN 49. So far the Beretta BM 59 looks like the best version of a battle rifle.

The enbloc clip is also better than the stripper clips. I haven't gotten a chance to try out a BM 59, but I like the idea.

I just bought one of these, but there are a couple things I've noticed compared to watching videos of them. One is that the bolt does not stay locked back on an empty magazine. The other is that the rear upper hand guard seems really loose, especially at the back of it. Are you going to do a full disassembly at all? That would really help me to take this apart and see if maybe something is broken.

I will do a full disassembly video eventually but not sure when that will be. Do it not lock back on an empty magazine just when firing or does it not lock back at all?
@captainexcabier

I actually haven't fired it yet, or even had it loaded. It just struck me as odd that it wouldn't lock open on an empty magazine since I know it needs to be loaded through the top with a clip. I've found the bolt stop, but it doesn't seem to quite reach up to the bolt when it's pushed all the way up. I actually ordered a new one online, but now my problem is that I can't get the trigger group out. I removed all three screws, but while the back of the trigger group will lift up, the front still acts like something is holding it and won't budge.

@@captainexcabier Have you taken a look at a manual to see if that helps? @ForgottenWeapons has one on his website. www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/manuals/FN49Manual.pdf

I hadn't looked at that manual, but I had found a step-by-step disassembly guide online. This is part of how I determined what and where the bolt stop was. As far as I can tell, there shouldn't be any other fasteners at the front end of the trigger guard. As a precaution I even removed the little lock screw, yet I can't get the front end to lift out. All it will do is wiggle a bit. The wood doesn't seem to be impeding it. The best I can figure is that the two halves of the cylinder the front screw goes into are either rusted together, or maybe the previous owner glued them together for some reason. I'm probably going to end up having to get a little pry bar and trying to twist it between the two halves of the magazine well and just hope I don't hurt anything important. Or just live with the fact the bolt stop doesn't work and lock the bolt open manually to reload it, I suppose.

Okay, I managed to get it apart. I bought a nylon pry bar (apparently it's meant for fine woodwork to avoid marring it), and managed to pop it off. The trigger group side has a cup that fits over a cylinder on the receiver side and they stick together for some reason. When I started to put them back together and had to take it apart again, I had the same problem of them sticking together and having to pry it apart. As for the bolt stop, I have no idea what the problem was. I took it out and compared it to the spare part I ordered online and found them to be identical. I decided to put the original back in, and while I had some difficulty getting it to go back in to where it was supposed to, I got it, and then put everything back together, and now it works like it's supposed to. I may take it apart again and oil it because it's a bit sticky. I suspect that this gun has been apart before and that it must not have quite been in where it was supposed to be. I didn't see any debris fall out that would have interfered with it, though.
