Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
When the FN FAL was first being sold, many militaries that bought it opted to mount optics on a small percentage of their rifles. These military setups used a variety of different optics and mounts, and led FN to develop their own OEM solution. By the 1970s, the FN industrial conglomerate including an optics workshop, and so they produced their own 4x optics for the FAL and FNC rifles. We have an example of one here today, a 4x28mm FN scope on an FAL. Note that the lack of specific designation on the BDC cam indicated that it is a 7.62x51mm BDC; the ones intended for 5.56mm in the FNC rifles are marked “SS109”, “109” or “92”, depending on the 5.56mm loading they are calibrated for.

Even rarer is the shortened FN FAL featured in the movie *'Wild Geese'* (1978, Richard Burton, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, and Hardy Krüger). The special 'custom' FAL (which looks like the modern DSA FAL carbine) appears in several scenes in the hands of 'Sergeant Tosh Donaldson', played by *Ian Yule* (a real life Congo mercenary and ex-SAS member). His FAL 'shorty' is fitted with a *SinglePoint* (or Armson or Qwik Point) type sight. I contacted Mr. Yule's agent some years ago and he informed me that they had sourced the rifle from some contacts they had in the South African defence community (who they were working with in the making of the movie). Maybe Forgotten Weapons will feature this rifle some day?

Haven't had a chance to test if it holds zero, but mounts just fine and has nice clear glass. Centered vertically true to a plumb line with the crosshairs which is always a plus!It's a great ru-vid.comUgkxc4K63Fd5LglDMObu7-Bgapxp_ef0W8hE scope. There's no parallax adjustment or focus ring, so may be limited to 3-7x, have to see how it is on the range. Also be aware that the rings are "look through" so you can still use irons, but they are really tall if you only intend to use the optics. On a 22LR no biggie since I'm not shooting competitions or worried about a hard cheek press. Will boresight and range test, if all goes well, I'll leave it at that!

I assume a regular top cover could be put in place, if a scoped replacement was not available. This does not allow the immediate use of iron sights as a backup, but does allow the rifle to return to service using standard spare parts. It also means a common rifle could get an upgrade to optical sights by any soldier. Not bad for a rifle without native scope mounting holes or a builtin rail. This is a very smart design, and a great video. Thanks

Ian- Enjoy your videos and been really enjoying the FN FAL videos. I had to watch this one twice and then get mine out of the safe! I don't have the factory scope but I am always interested to see a rifle close to what I've got. I have a purchased new in 1986 "Steyr Secaucus NJ" stamped FAL. My serial is just over 1,000 rifles lower and besides the scope mount the other big difference is I have the older style or more traditional style flash hider. Just thought it was interesting that between the original Imported Assault Weapons Ban happening in '86 that there is that much difference between the 2 rifles, importers being the biggest. Side note- I run a Shepherd's scope, 310-P3, 3-10 x40 in an ARMS mount on mine and it's a tack driver with 168gr match ammo.

I could not miss the top disk of a drink stirrer at 50 yards with the FN FAL 7.62x51mm (Dark Black Wooden stock) with its default Aperture rear sight, post front sight ...had the gas turned down a bit to make it easier and smoother to get sights on target again ..only loaded 16 rounds in the magazine to ease the ejection of the cartridge.....the sights and accuracy of that rifle was beyond deadly....i started shooting with it when i was 10 years old...i could strip that thing bare in the dark with my eyes closed...extracting the gas cylinder and spring by lifting and turning the grenade sight,removing the "mouse" and cover to clean the magazine well etc....those were the good old days...when i was 19 years old (1993) South-Africa were in talks of some political changes. We decided to take the FN (R1 we called the Army issue in RSA) and wrap it in grease and oil rags,put it with its 6 magazines in an old "balsak" together with about a 1000 rounds mix of red tip (tracers) and black tip (armor piercing) still in the small carton boxes of ammo with the white R1M1 stickers (army issue) on it.....drove to a small secondary bridge crossing the Vaal river, and we dumped it in the river.......one of the saddest days of my life (i loved that rifle so much) that i would strip it and clean it in front of the tv watching cartoons on a Saturday morning..when i was left alone during the days when my parents went to visit family, i would have the "FN" beside me on the couch with its 20 round magazine loaded. Those days in SA many kids were raised with weapons in the house and trained by their dads on how to be responsible in operating and handling them...i knew trigger discipline from 8 years old using 12Gauge shotguns,Beretta pistols etc....nowadays the closest kids get to guns is in computer games...without a father figure in the house.

turrets of the scope und backsite nearly look like first generation Hensoldt scopes for the G3. Sure they weren´t build by Hensoldt/ Steiner/ Karl Kaps of Bundeswehr drawings?

Anyone have any idea how rare the FNC scopes (not FAL) are? I've wanted to get my hands on one for years.

Did the same scope get shipped to Commonwealth countries for use with our, (inch pattern) FN slr's??

Always a problem with a top cover mounted scope, the bloody things took forever to zero.

Why did they design the pistol grip to be as angled as it is? I always found it super uncomfortable.
@509Gman

Drue Just closer to the grip angle on a “traditionally stocked” rifle. As rifles get smaller, the favored grip gets more vertical.

G series is the most expensive($10,000). Then the 50.64 Rokack($ who knows)with the alloy lower/21" barrel, folding stock, only 200 imported in the US, a lot in South America. Then the 50.63 Paratrooper, only 1,375 imported($5,000) 17.25" barrel and folding stock. The rifle shown is 50.00 the most common, the dust cover and scope are rarer than the rifle.
