FNaF Theory: Was MatPat Right about FNaF Theorists? @GameTheory 

I'm going to be brutally honest; any time an indie creator (not a large studio/company) creates a new piece of media, the community often develops this really intense para-social relationship with the literal ownership of that media. When the thing in question is created by and owned by a larger corporation, it tends to develop a fanbase that is passionate but more likely to understand the distance between themselves and the media they are in love with. When it comes to FNAF, I feel like there have been multiple instances where it just seems like the community and it's members (who are often youtube theorists) become extremely possessive of how to interoperate what is a 100% intentional mystery of a story narrative. The story of FNAF has always been a mystery to ponder and put together, but I feel like it's always been treated as a long-running comic book instead with a direct narrative. Superman's history is very factually obvious; which is why long-running comics series have had a lot of retcons and resets; because they do sometimes have to reverse or re-tell how events happened and they have to very bluntly signal that so their audience does not get mad. Meanwhile I see FNAF's story as a long-running mystery, but it's not being treated as the mystery it is. Many writers behind a mystery have it all plotted out behind the scenes but intentionally want to make it your job as the fan/reader find the entertainment value in solving it yourself... And so, in those circles, it's accepted that people can have wildly different opinions; because the point is to generate different opinions! In fact, for a mystery series writer who is a pantser (writes by the seat of their pants) different perspectives/feedback gives them a lot of ideas about how to move their story forward through future installments. I don't know how to really get all of this across, but if we could somehow just tell people not knowing exactly what happened is PART of the FUN then I think a lot of this weird tension would actually go away. As long as people take this all too literally and think in such binary terms that there is a correct and incorrect answer then I think we will continue to have these problems.

I really agree with this video. I’ve been worrying a lot about how Mat discussing only unconstructive criticism (which should definitely be called out) while ignoring the actual constructive criticism (like the arguments you’ve presented in this video) may cause people to dismiss genuine, constructive criticism. I’ve also been worried about the “S” and “N” classifications that Mat has unnecessarily introduced into the community, and I’m glad you discussed that and the problems with it.

Disclaimer, I've never played a FNAF game, or read FNAF book, but watching the theorizing community has been a long time guilty pleasure of mine. I feel like the biggest recurring problem I see is all the Ad Hominin nonsense. It's fine to say whatever you want about a theory, but a lot of people cross over into digs on the theorist giving the theory. I see this AGAINST Mat a lot, but also, he's doing it himself here once he started talking about the "S"s. As someone who has a degree in psych and who has worked in psych/special ed for 16 years, I already starting cringing SUPER hard when I first heard him mention the MBPT, but when he started getting into this shit where he was implying that "S" people just don't have, like, the right types of brain to get it, I honestly felt a little sick. RU-vidrs who have literally no background in psych really need to refrain from talking about it as if they are any sort of authority on the subject. People seem to have no idea how harmful it is.

I feel like one of the key takeaways, is that no theorist is trying to 'spin a narrative' with information. I doubt Matpat, Fuhnaff, or anyone else is trying to purposely mislead people or tell their own version of the story, they're simply trying to point in new directions we could be going. The missing evidence is incredibly concerning, don't get me wrong- that kind of stuff is important and it should be there, in fact I 100% agree with the 'theorists need to bring actual facts on the table' thing you talked about, but I don't any of these things are left out with any genuine desire "spin their own narrative". I doubt Matpat, or anyone else, has any actual desire to do such a thing because if you're that deep into his rabbit hole, you're probably here to genuinely theorize. And I feel like Mat's completely missed the point of 'why people don't like his theories', and I think the whole 'Personality Test' thing was his way of circumventing the actual topic with bad data. Because I think there are two parts to this. One; the misinformation and his current track record. I honestly feel like Mat's just determined to beat the dead horse that is either the Aftons or any other part of the original series without considering anything like 'how much sense does this make?' Like, a question I've had from his last few videos, when he said we should 'follow the kid of Edwin and see where he ends up', is 'how on earth would Charlie even end up in the systems of the Pizzaplex? Glitchtrap's there because he was uploaded there, but why on earth would Charlie even be there? Who would've uploaded the Puppet into the Pizzaplex?' The second reason's pretty simple, and I think might actually explain a few of the comments he showcased earlier, people just don't like what they're hearing, and so they react negatively. Twitter, Reddit, RU-vid Comments 101. And I don't think his message is about personality tests, so much as it is "FNAF needs people to look beyond the surface." Which, while not wrong, also ignores the fact surface-level interpretations are very much valid and can often be correct. (Like, we all agree the MCI happened, right? There's no contesting that with deeper research, is there-) And that if you spend too much time digging deep into things that aren't there, you'll drive yourself insane thinking you're on to something when in actuality you aren't. (Something which uh, we can see Mat sorta has a penchant for.) Ultimately, I see what Mat was trying to do. He wanted to get try to get the community to not riot whenever they see something that goes against where THEY wanted the story to go, and for people to be more respectful to theorists who put themselves out there. And honestly, he's not wrong here, you can't ever come close to finding out a truth unless you've filtered through your options. Even if it's an idea you disagree with, you should take the time to point out WHY you disagree instead of immediately resorting to Ad Hominem. (And I'm honestly thankful that it seems like that's the message everyone took from the video.) But I feel like, as a community, we're also owed transparency from the theorists, and if we're not getting it, obviously we're going to doubt your validity. Even if it's so much as just 'reasons I excluded ex information', that'll help the community trust theory channels a lot more in the long run. Tld;r: The FNaF community needs to chill because we are all on the same boat here, and not just belittle the theories of theorists because they don't agree with them for whatever reason. But as a community, we also need to be able to trust theorists and the accuracy of their information, because if you're not telling the truth, then what's the point of making a theory?

7:16 Scott is the only one that can decide on the names for characters? It’s entirely possible that Steel Wool decided to name The Blob “The Tangle” but didn’t want to reveal the official name in the book so whoever wrote the book just used the fan name and stated that it’s not the official name.

From my perspective as an outsider to the theory community, this is one of the best takes on the situation. The FNaF fandom is often needlessly hostile to creators in general and I'm glad they're being called out; the problem is that MatPat went about it in the absolute worst way possible. Never mind Mat's penchant for speaking before he thinks, never mind that the Myers-Briggs test is pseudoscience, never mind that he's ranting about disagreements over bear game. Labeling any criticism, constructive or otherwise, as an unsavory personality trait is a truly moronic mindset and spreading it to an impressionable audience is bound to result in harassment and further division. I think criticism of MatPat usually doesn't go far enough, if anything. You don't see any other major theorist consistently pushing misinformation and reductive viewpoints like this, and they'd be much less likely to get away with it if they did. People are constantly bending over backwards to find excuses for him, just look at the intense backlash to any critics after this video. His handling of this is ignorant at best and frankly, it makes me glad I stopped theorizing long ago. It's nice to see some nuance in this video, considering the other theorists have been backing Mat all the way. Everyone I've met in that group is awesome and I know Mat is a huge inspiration for them, but it's okay to admit when there's obvious flaws in the work of someone you admire.

Thank you! As a new fan (~ a year) that is older than most FNAF theorists 💀 that video concerned me for the same reasons. You explained them precisely and I appreciate that about you, always thorough and presenting truthfully 😊

Adding to this video, if you really truly look back at the series, 2nd game was mainly made with the intention of a sequel, it being more lore and theory heavy, and include new things to talk about, Scott was very smart in doing that for all the games. Another point is that there are points of the story that new people coming in wouldn't even know, like how Baby became Scrap Baby and Enard became molten freddy, or how we figured out William's name, or technically the Crying Child's name but that one is debated, unless the newer people go back and watch videos, but the magic of learning all of this and following the story somewhat at that time was the peak time to do so. With theory making, it has its ups and downs, and there is no side to truly side on, clearly I don't like people getting harassed or rude shit sent their way for theorizing about a big topic like GregBot (personally I don't believe it but like the idea of the theory) but at the same time, the fans want to also help figure out the game, the story, figure out with the RU-vidrs, but since we all have no idea, its harder and harder to stay happy with no answers or little. I don't know exactly what happened to cause our community to act so toxic, I hate really using that word but this is beyond how its been, from Scott's issues and him retiring early, the Pear situation, all the drama constantly with RU-vidrs and their fans, and so on. I hope one day we can come together, like the living tombstone's songs did for us, how Scott did for us in creating this fandom, how he cared about the community that first ridiculed him for his designs, but still gave us love, and most of us gave it in return. We have to do better, be better people, enjoyers, theorists, anything and everything, for the fandom's and Scott's sake. (This is a useless rant about the 2 extremes of how people view matpat) As a huge matpat fan my main problem with the fnaf community/matpat subscribers is 1. the people who take his theories as fact and yell at anyone who challenges it 2. people who constantly hate on him for a video they can just ignore. Like guys, do you think he's serious when he makes a film theory saying bluey is secretly evil? No 😭 To me, some things ESPECIALLY his channels where he uses actual data in like food theory and stuff, are very entertaining, and even his theories when i disagree are still interesting to me. He's even said once before that he doesnt care if you agree or not (unless youre being hateful about it) he wants people to think way outside the box- so its so dumb to me when people obsess or get genuinely complain/yell about him all the time- you both look ridiculous. I honestly was a bit scared to watch this at first, but then when I did I absolutely agree with some of the points. It’s ok to point out the obvious toxicity of some viewers, but it’s also very important to remember that not every criticism is bad.

I could have sworn that matpat specifically said that the books aren't 100% canon, which you're not making him out to be. (he does say 1:1, but in context, he's talking about an occurrence in the book, not the whole book) Second you say he "misrepresents" facts when you show gregory shirt which is blue, but has a purple stripe(which I don't think matters, but saying something's not when you show said something and it is, is just plain wrong) and I haven't read the books but I don't think you gave a quote for chica being the 18th animatronic, when you accuse matpat of just saying a "fact". I think it's dumb to accuse someone of misinformation and saying that he didn't provide proof from the books, when you did the exact same thing(being no proof). Third you accuse John's connection of baby and the mimic, but are we not theorists, like he came to a conclusion, so respect it(you don't have to believe it) there are many instances in this series of things not lining up perfectly, but you have to fill in the gaps with "small clues" which may even be (a jester costume). Another thing (4:47) like dude...I know they removed it from the second one...but like you know that's not even the real Gregory in the ending, and also doing it twice, would give away the fact that that was important. (not entirely sure on this one) but I believe the ending with the bear popsicle was the "canon ending, while the ending here is not.(just thought to point that out too). (6:05)...this line just makes me angry not gonna lie...do you think a guy who worked on this game for years, would think it's just black and white...this game is generalization(literally why there's theories on it), there are almost no definitive answers in the grand scheme.(and btw, better judgement is very much a subjective statement...because the very word judgement is already someone's opinion) and matpat never says the books are 100% canon...not that I've seen at least. Now I agree matpat did make a bad light of the s type person, but he did have a reason for believing it(aka a theory) And I strongly believe that matpat has a right to call out negativity against him and his friends, no one has a more important opinion. Whatever is happening is wrong, and I believe matpat put it out well(not even close to perfect, but well) Now finally, I'd like to end this with: this is no attack, just an opinion of some random guy, I'm aware. But I don't like seeing a whole video dedicated to calling out negativity, especially towards someone I like. I like what you say in this video but just like how matpat could have done it, you could have also made it better. I hope you don't take offence to this, that's not my intention, but I absolutely do not agree with the negativity that is happening. And I feel like when you critique someone who's standing against the negativity, you're not exactly justifying it, but you're pretty close to. I watched Matt video and i was along for the ride (haven't read the book so i don't know better) until he said the personality thing, it just didn't sit well with me, i don't know Your video clarified a lot for me, so thank you for your work!

This was a good analysis. Particularly around the myers Briggs test. I have taken it and gotten consistent results, but it’s nothing more than a fun exercise without any actual scientific rigor behind it. It’s widely accepted and used because it tends to reinforce preconceived notions of self but in this context it absolutely draws down to an us vs them mentality. As I’ve not read the books I cannot speak to the accuracy of the book theory facts, but I’m torn on how much hate that the channel deserves for it. The theory channels pump out an insane amount of scripted content every week. Inaccuracies are going to happen as scale increases, but on the other hand this is a series in particular that MatPat stakes a claim of expertise on. My only complaint with this video is taking the scholastic email as hard factual evidence that the phrase is still in play. It is closer to official than nothing, but it feels much more like a quick response from the marketing team that was then expanded and sent to the customer inquiring than a true official statement. Especially when, as noted, some of the tales stories contain obviously non canon elements. So, he undermines his own point against MatPat’s point to come to the same conclusion. The books are not 100% canon, but can be used to understand and inform events in the series. After that it’s using judgement for what to use and exclude. With that it is impossible to get away from complaints of cherry picking when it comes to the stories, but you can’t just ignore them either. But yeah, the community didn’t need more “us vs them” ammunition.

Good job on this one 👍 I think one of the issues in recent theories is the amount of content there is, there are lots and lots of books, games and other media to keep track off so if you have a theory is really hard to know everything even if it seemed solid at first, so theorists are having issues keeping track of everything and that causes misinformation...

Great video that like most of the comments say, hit points that most others ive seen are ignoring I just wish Scott would give us some ACTUAL answers like he did when he told us he changed Dream Theory. Its almost not even fun anymore because we have almost nothing to latch on to as facts. Heck even the last guide book was filled with false information and ommitting characters that we thought existed Like at the bare minimum tell us what extent are we supposed to use the books Because with as many theories Pokemon, Mario etc has. We can bare minimum agree on most major points

One of my biggest problems was just the opening, Matpat comes out of the gate so heated, as if his career hasn't booned from hate watchers just as much as real watchers. In part i believe there is literally too many puzzle pieces for us to keep track at this point. All of these details, characters across multiple games and books, misleading info (such as retcons or the encyclopedia that contained misinfo)… its bound to trip up a few theorists. Hell, it even trips me up, and its why i don’t personally theorize lol

i feel that matpat used the MBTI as a tool to defend himself, the entire video felt like he was personally attacked and had to blame the critics in some way, they have to be the ones in the wrong. he was mad and hurt and that's why he used the MBTI ethier knowing or not that it's regarded as pseudo-science.

Criticisms like him not doing enough research or Misleading, never get bought up, and when they do He Cherrypicks the WORST Criticisms made by children like "This gave me cancer" or "Mat is a poopy face" When real Criticism gets placed in the same category, just for him to make them look like heretics, "Oh listen to this guy, I MAKE FAKE EVIDENCE, yeah right I MATPAT MAKE FAKE EVIDENCE how dare you just make such am accusation" remember this is the same guy who claimed Mario doesn't thank Luigi at the end of Mario is Missing only for it to be the next cutscene.

You're right exactly spot on, the reasons for hate isn't "hate for the sakes of hate" like matpat tried to present it, they're much, much deeper and go as far as the fact that he and fuhnaff base their whole theories on the misinformation that then millions from their audiences watch and take as gospel. And the fact that matpat refused not only to acknowledge it but also decided to mix all the critics of him with the dirt only fired up the community even more. Neithere there's a "general hate against all theorists", as it's only mostly matpat and fuhnaff who do the misinformation things and get the factual basics completely made up in their "theories". Another huge problem with matpat's theorizing is how he and then also his massive audience put the whole blame on fnaf's lore "complexity" solely on scott and steelwool, when it's none other than matpat who makes the stuff unnecessarily complicated for interpretation. None of this hate would've happened if both of them acknowledged this and fixed their misinformative ways of theorizing.

mat pat came off as really (unintentionally) smug in this video to me. he didn’t even respond to any actual criticisms of his theories. like, i appreciate him trying to be respectful and encouraging being respectful to other creators. that’s obviously agreeable. but he only responded to stuff written by either children or incredibly immature people who should just be ignored, and even then all he said was “erm, TOUCH GRASS! LOL!” then he spends a decent amount of the video reiterating ‘evidence’ for gregbot that already has been widely contested at best and debunked at worst, but doesn’t update his arguments to address any issues. he spends the rest of the basically explaining that the reason people don’t like some of his videos isn’t that they might be wrong or poorly argued, it’s only because you actually just don’t get it! you big dumb dumb, you just can’t make anything more than basic observations, unlike the n types, who are much deeper thinkers! there’s zero self reflection in mat’s video. he would rather rely on pseudoscience than actually think about why, all of a sudden, the fnaf theorist community at large has stopped taking his videos as seriously. surely he can’t be wrong about something, it’s actually the viewer’s fault for not thinking about it in the right way

This. It's something i've been saying for years at this point. the The issue with current fnaf theories these day's is The fundemental Story telling of fnaf. Sure Solving Mysteries was something fnaf always had. the difference now is that fnaf is just simply TOO big to work that way anymore. back in the day's of the original theory the theorising was about things that had already happened long ago by that point. We had bullet points and events at the Beginning(as fnaf 2 showed what actually happened), the middle(fnaf 1 which raised the mysteries of what happened in the past) and the end.(fnaf 3 which was where it all came together in a satisfying finale) but nowdays most theorising is about what WILL happen next. what the next big reveal WILL be. so it's just a bunch of Rivaling head canons and interpertations. With Fnaf VR it was understandable. It was a soft reboot that was supposed to be a new beginning with new characters and Lore Only loosely tied to the Previous Afton saga. And people where exited to see where things were going. Whatever happened behind closed doors during security breach REALLY fucked up any plans they had. So now we're left with questions that i don't think Steel wool or Scott 100% know the answers to. and Scott is just Trying to course correct with the books. But the fundimental Flaw witht he books is that they Are only half canon The stories are non canon. but only SOME aspects of the books Are canon. so it becomes a whole new useless layer for theorists to solve. what official information can we even trust to solve this other mystery people are actually interested in. no one is asking for Fnaf to be black and white. What people are asking for is the information to work with to be Black and white. we just Need to know What information is trust worthy. So yeah i don't even really blame the theorists on this. It's the current way of Story telling that is flawed. I RELLY hope all this get's sorted out soon son so we can leave this era of the Series and fandom to exist as a Small period of Fumbles and Mis steps.

like i understand why matpat used the personality's test with the smash bros vid but that was dumb fun but when you use it for bull crap makes no sense, I am an INFP but because of my ADHD i show signs of other personality traits like INFJ and ENFJ i might make a video on it but thank you for talking about that part of his video

one of my biggest issues with matt's new video is that he felt the need to spend the first half of it being high and mighty about his theories, and claiming that those who disagree with him (myself included) are wrong, disingenuous, etc., which is just not the case. there are tons of extremely valid criticisms to be made of matt's fnaf theories, especially the security breach and ruin theories as well as the timeline videos, and the way he completely brushes those off and invalidated them is very frustrating and also didn't start his video on a good note. my biggest problem with matt's fnaf content since his security breach playthrough is his tunnel vision, and it's biting him in the ass in this video as well. and it's very glaring when so many of his fnaf theorist contemporaries don't have that issue at all, and are very open to new information and the opinions and, most importantly, criticisms of others. that coupled with the frequent blatant misinformation, particularly regarding the books that a large portion of his viewers and theory community at large don't read, is really putting me off of his fnaf theory content. that's not to say that the community isn't far, FAR too harsh on theories, they absolutely are, but that doesn't negate any of my above points or a lot of matt's arguments and rhetoric in his video being questionable at best. i really appreciate your take on all of this btw! i'm glad people, including fnaf content creators, are voicing their opinions and concerns on this matter.

Loved how Matt used my post TWICE at different points and censored my name the second time to try to make it look like two posts. Also, the post wasn't toxic, and was rather respectful in my view. I even said that if MatPat isn't passionate, he shouldn't feel pressured to cover Fnaf if he doesn't want to and should be free to work on things he IS passionate about. That is not toxic, that is supportive. I stand by everything I said in that post. I deleted it because there were other people apparently being threatened for their posts, I was one of the lucky ones who wasn't. I honestly just didn't want to have a ton of notifications that someone wants to do me harm or something, so I deleted the post. I'm not scared of those kinds of threats, they're just honestly a mildly irritating inconvenience to me having to get rid of their notification. Regardless, I once again reiterate that I stand by every single word of that post.

I did thought Matpat’s video was decent. He brought up a great problem that exists within the series, but ends up labeling certain people for certain beliefs in a fictional series. I think this video does a great job at revealing more problems with FNaF theorizing and showing all the problems with Matpat’s newest video. Great job Under_Score.

I think one of biggest problems with FNaF theorizing is that we often forget that humans aren't perfect. Scott made mistakes during his time as lead developer and so has SteelWool. Treating every pixel like a piece of the puzzle that will solve everything will drive you crazy because there's some errors here and there.

As someone whos been in this FNaF fandom since it begun, we really need to stop stepping on each others toes. And matpat is definitely not helping with how he made his video.

He was also just coming off as extremely condescending the whole video, what a way to address your fans, I think he's jumping on the "new fans discourse" or whatever you wanna call the drama that tenured fans are making of new fans for literally no reason.

People need to be more polite to each other in general. No fighting over who’s theory is right, it shouldn’t matter. Just discuss because it’s a common interest or to get a different approach, not to push your point onto others. This shouldn’t be a right or wrong situation, by the end we’re ALL going to be wrong anyways knowing Scott.

Your character is just so cool, cute, and more tbh. I kind of want to possess it and play around with it. I am still of the opinion that there is no canon story to FNAF and I'll just enjoy whatever as long as Steel Wool Studios and Scott Cawthon can finally know what they're doing.

I agree with most things in this video. Point of clarification: Operationalizing question on how do you “just get the facts right” ? You say that as of there’s some scientifically validated journal or governing body for the “correct interpretation” of FNAF information. I think it’s an incredibly difficult prospect to keep up with ALL of FNAF lore, news, 3rd party publisher statement, etc. Do y’all need to establish an official FNAF Theorycrafting Association wiki with layers of validation from at least 5 groups of people (so Theorist team can only have one slot). It might need at least one slot too for that angry commenter for at least fair representation of all parties…? , etc. I’ll stop there. I’m getting lost in the sauce. I don’t even know if the fairly academic example I am giving is helping 😂 But I’m legitimately curious how you think groups of creators can easily accomplish “just getting the facts right” when this entire ecosystem has gotten so huge and impossible to keep up with for individuals.

To be fair, the whole thing with the books was kind of a mess when you think about it... Before, people didn't want to used them for theories, like side quest. (Exploring ideas but no plot progress) And now it's apparently the opposite ? I don't even remember when or why that happen... Theories wouldn't be fun if it was easy, right ? Personally, theories and "What if ?" all you want, who knows... You might find a interesting takes or make you think about something differently. Kinda like math, some people do it differently but ended up having the same result.

I wanted to make an paragraph long content debating and debunking this video. But then i thought, why dont i touch grass? Then i did. And now, ill say this, Fnaf Lore and its community, is like The Christian Bible and its Believers, excluding Athiests or Anti-Thiests or other religions. This Hate Train will never end. 5:32 you can’t argue that the email proves that books are canon. The line never confirmed that the books were canon in the first place. The fact that it got removed doesn’t necessarily change anything, but the email saying “it’s removal doesn’t indicate anything about the content” also doesn’t confirm anything. There is no direct confirmation of anything.

I agree that the N and S grouping is unnecessary, however I think he has a point as to what mindset one has to have when analyzing FNAF. It could have been phrased better, like "you really need to be open minded" or something like that. It's not that Ns are better at theorizing, but rather that theorizing itself has certain rules that some people might not be used to. I think he used the MBTI as a way to simplify this concept but ended up not being really effective

Both this video and the og game theory suck. I agree 90% with what matpat is saying but its worded in a laughably horrible way, this video is a strawman although its an understandable one considering mat doesnt really understand how to communicate what he is trying to say. Underscore here also doesnt understand how theories, arguments and logic even works and how people get (irrationally) mad over them. Basically, Matpat is big dumb dumb because miscommunication, this video is big dumb dumb because misrepresentation and lack of understanding over the topic, and the comments here are big dumb dumb because everything.

This is why i don't like the books and the fact that we have to read and re read them several times in order to make theories about the games. I wanna go back to the times when we just had the games and didn't have to read anything other than the guid books and character encyclopedia

I'm definitely a little mad at matpat, not only has he further divided the fnaf theory fanbase, but he has also fired shots at us for doing exactly what he does in his own videos. I'm not going to go on a hate campaign over it, but I am immensely dissapointed.

simply put I really don't think every character and thing in the books in cannon there is just no way with the amount of stuff in there only there are some things that have canonicity like mimic or ggy but everything else is mainly parallel or alternate universe in the same style of the og books cause the amount of characters and thing that are just not accounted and we should see is baffling due to amount of books there are its similar to agents of shield from mcu they have there own story but sometimes slightly connected with events from the movies doesn't mean its cannon though fully until we see connection that is how people should view the books not as 100 percent true but could be true if you have the right evidence
