Literally came here to compare, and holy molly you definitely stepped up your game ! However all the oldies are beautiful to watch still nowadays, to see Foals "raw" like this barely 2 years after they started.. amazing
actually he was having some problems with his throat from a cold. His headphone mix was a little off but it was corrected. that mic is about as standard of a mic as you can get for vocals. They had just been touring for a long time and this was the last day, they were tired but still came in to perform for us.
Foals have been one of the most consistent indie bands going, not a bad tune in over a decade. They are so young on this one, but the talent is still so strong and the musical prowess is undeniable.
yannis is such a fucking god, even when he doesn't hit the right notes he realises yet still has the bollocks to keep going with it, even if he does look pissed off as fuck. genuine musician right there boys
despite yannis' chain smoking catching up with him for this song, it's one of the best performances(sound wise) of this song that i've heard. the only thing that gets me, is that when ever they play this song its never nearly fast enough. i'm pretty sure that was a lot slower than the recording. and needs to be 10x faster live than on the recording instead. i only say this because of so much love for this song and wanting to be able to go mental to it instead of bop
you all seem confused as to why the dude looks angry...he couldn't hear anything properly...he was frustrated as he probably needed to hear everything to help with the singing...KEXP was still young in terms of video recording and audio recordings. It was probably an absolute nightmare at the time....hence the singers frustrated looks...! x
@SwaziStogen Skinny jeans in rock will never become cliched! At every point in time since the 50's (or 501s) there has always been a rock-genre (made up fact) that favoured the "second skin" :-)
@semiLivedj ha i'm a musician myself...i dont have what i would call aLOT of studio time under my belt yet, probly only a hundred hours and some change. but i sing and play guitar, mandolin, trumpet, piano....and i'm just starting to pick up drumming, ironically. I think when we say "loops" and "sampling" we're referring to slightly different things....
@semiLivedj Well i don't completely agree with you that loops and samples are ONLY used to make the recording process less expensive [if thats what you're saying. if not, my bad], some bands put a lot of time and effort into using the medium effectively in my opinion. As far as what Foals' music reflects of the negative impact that the recording industry has had on musicianship, I tend to agree with you. I need to explore more of their music before I can say that with finality, though.
@semiLivedj I, of course, totally agree with you, in a recording studio, loops and samples of instruments are often used to speed up the recording process, i'm guilty of doing it myself when i'm using my 8 track at home. I meant more like when bands use samples of sounds that aren't made with an instrument as an integral part of their sound. But yeah, long story short, using loops and samples to cut corners...not the right way to do it. I'd rather learn to play it myself. if i have the time.
@semiLivedj i agree with what youre saying, but like samej13, im 20 and i know a bit about music.ive been recording since i was 15 doing covers & originals.ive gone from using tooth pick boxes as shakers in songs to using only one guitar and using my computer for the rest of the instruments to me playing my acoustic with a harmonica.its not just about the companies.musicians need to want to be original and unique otherwise there can be no evolution.weve come a long way,but weve got a ways to go
If you foals you met like to listen to three trapped tigers. you could say there a fusion between foals, holy fuck ( who supported foals at Brixton), and battles. The Drummer is amazing.
Just to clear this up.... It doesn't matter that you're a music student at Oxford. That doesn't mean you know shit. Actually, IT DOES mean that you know how to read about music out of a textbook, you know how to over-analyze the music itself, and it also mean that you know how to pass tests. But IT DOESN'T mean you know about music.
@jahnaten haha sorry i meant to reply to the comment below yours haha but yes I agree or some thing by the cure like underneath the satrs or to wish impossible things:)
@semiLivedj I don't particularly like Foals' use of loops, I do not think that it is that imaginative or groundbreaking. However, experimentation is and has always been a integral part of music and musicianship, and I think your seemingly naive assumption that musicians use laptops just to be "cheaper" is inaccurate. I don't want to put words in your mouth or bash you like some of these guys have been, I'm just interested in what you meant.
@semiLivedj it has nothing to do with the companies or laptops... music is evolving its as simple as that. if you dont like that then go listen to some led zep or some deep purple. no need to spam here.
I'm just curious semiLivedj, what's an example of a perfect band to you? Better not be The Beatles. I'm not even that huge of a Foals fan, and I'm not exactly defending their fanbase, I'm just wondering because you seem to have ultimate musical knowledge. So please, indulge me.
