Foam beetles have been around for ages, and there really isn't anything new here. In fact I am sure many people have used ice dubbing before instead of peacock hurl. However I have tied them this way for a long time and really like them like this. So I thought I would show you the way I do them.
As stated in the video, I really like using the ice dubbing because it will give the fly a more buggy look, almost looking like little legs under it, and it gives more flash, and is generally in my experience more durable. Its a win win on all fronts. Also I find dubbing this on to be quicker than wrapping peacock hurl up the hook evenly.
These flies can be tied in a number of sizes, and I have tied them down to even size 16, and all the way up to size 6. Generally with a size 6 or larger, I like to go with a thicker foam, like a size 6mm vs the 2mm I am using here. Or double up the 2mm, which is nice because you have the ability to go 2 tone with the doubled up version. But no mater what size you tie these in, they tend to be very deadly, especially in the late summer when there are lots of terrestrials out. But any time you see beetles flying around, this is a good fly to have tied on your line.
As always I am including a list of the materials I used on this fly, and links to these materials online. As a thank you for being my subscriber I am also including a discount code to be used at checkout when purchasing from the fly artist. Type in McFlySubs at checkout for your discount!

That’s how I like it! Haha. Who likes tying a bug that takes an hour and is hard to tie when you might loose it to a tree. Lol

Good fly. Use them here in upstate New York, mostly during the summer

For sure a more summer fly, agreed. Usually during the normal terrestrial fishing months. It’s a classic and one I always have in my box though even through winter. I like it cause it can float high and even hold up beaded nymphs, however it can be tied small and still occasional hits on it in the winter. Just not as effective as summer for sure.

I wish I was that good already but I’m working on it to get better. Heading back out to the Pecos and I have plenty of different type of flies.

Oh man, you can tie this fly! It’s not that hard at all. And really I’m not all that good, but thank you.

Hey Shawn. The video looks great, looks like you stepped up your production and I like it. Did you get a new camera? the close shot looks nice and sharp. Cheers

Thanks! Yeah I’ve had the same camera for about a year now, however I always tied one angle, and over my shoulder. Now, I put the camera closer to the hook, and in between me and the fly. Makes it about 10 times more difficult to tie because the camera actually blocks my view of the fly. I look through the view finder of the camera to tie the fly now. But, it does increase the crispness and quality of the video I think. Thanks for noticing! :)

Also I’ve been really working on tweaking the camera settings and finding the perfect ones. That month I took off filming I was able to find some time to really work at the production level.

Ya, looks great. I do the same with the camera angle and I can appreciate how tricky it makes tying a fly. Keep up the great production.

Thanks! Yeah, the flies I tie on video usually don’t come out as nice because of it... haha
