The full back, flash back, bead head, Pheasant Tail (wow thats a mouthful)... Is a great fly! Everyone fishes the flash back pheasant tail, and there are many videos on youtube about how to tie them, but I have yet to find one as a full back flash back. I see these in fly shops all the time though, with the full flash back, but never seen people tie them. I find these full back versions do better when fish are spunky. The more flash on them actually attracts the aggressive fish more, especially on sunny days.
I also like tying these heavy, with a bead head and some lead wraps, but you could omit this in your tie if you want. For me though, I like fishing these as my lead fly, something to get the fishes attention, then drop something a little more subtle behind it, even just a regular pheasant tail, or a simple zebra midge. Something without a bead. The extra weight of my lead fly tends to get the whole rig down deep fast, without the need for lead split shot, so it makes a healthier river and easier day on the water not messing with split shot.

If you’re a brook trout devotee (like me), these types of flies are your bread and butter nymphs. I don’t nymph too often and usually it’s with a dry dropper but when I *do* nymph, it’s with a flashback pheasant tail, GC hare’s ear or something with some pizazz…brook trout are enthusiastic feeders and getting them to see your fly is 70% of the battle. My personal best native brookie was a 12” beast that took the flashback pheasant tail underneath my parachute adams.

It really is! Unfortunately there isn’t really much in the way of pheasant hunting near me. Lots of turkey and duck though! :).

I've tied variations of this fly using sandhill crane and turkey wing from ones I bagged. Works well.

I like using a flashback as the top fly in a two fly nymphing rig in still water. Even still I seem to get the majority of strikes on the bottom fly. Maybe the top fly doesn't appear natural enough. Nice tie McFly!
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 5 лет назад
Thanks man! Yeah many times (depending on where I go fish) the bottom, more realistic or simpler fly gets bit first. But not always, for instance my last trip it was these and prince nymphs (both were my lead flies) that were catching all the fish. Haha.
@bigpapi3636
@bigpapi3636 5 лет назад
McFly Angler That's really interesting. I usually tie the bottom fly off the hook shank of the top fly. I'm thinking that may make it look unrealistic.. I've tried using a short dropper for the top fly but it gets tangled up pretty easily. I either need a better method or Magic McFly flies!

I tied the bottom fly off the butt if the lead also...

Excellent video! I have a technical question! We're preparing to film a series of fly tying videos, and I'm wondering what camera/lens combo you are using? Your depth of field is beautiful, I would typically expect 50mm to achieve this look but the camera is POV verses filming back at you as you tie which I would assume would require more distance between your body and the lens... would you be willing to walk me through your setup?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 4 года назад
Thanks, glad you like them. I use a mirror less DSLR with a basic (kit) lends. Then put a different sized spacers in to get a more or less powerful macro. Lots of work, and lots of re-tying specific parts to get the best shot. Takes me over an hour to film just one simple fly. I’ve had it take as much as 2-3 hours just to film. When I tie, I look though the camera (screen) rather than the fly because the camera is between me and the fly. Private message me on Instagram and I can give you more detail.

Awesome fly, can't wait to tie it... What wt is that butter stick? What the best way to rig it? Thanks
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 года назад
Sure the butter stick was a 4wt…. And I find I like using this fly as my lead fly (first fly) because it’s heavy. It gets the nymphs down. Then behind it (distance depends on your waters) I drop a light fly like a black beauty or wd-40 or something. All under an indicator or even euro nymphing style. Good luck man! If you want a good nymph rod, check out risen fly. Www.risenfly.com. They have some nymphing rods there that are awesome! I’d recommend a 3 or 4wt 10’ rod to nymph with. And best of all they will give you a discount on your first order. Type in McFly at checkout.

@@McFlyAngler that's amazing advice, thank you.. I'm with everything an still learning..I'd like to get the 6wt butter stick but not sure what my options are for what I'm throwing on it.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 2 года назад
Well are you nymphing? If so, the butter stick isn't stiff enough in my opinion. It is however a great dry fly rod. So it just depends on what your looking to do.

@McFlyAngler

Well technically I don’t think it’s a copper John. But go ahead and tie it without one, personally I think beads are cheap enough to just pick a few up.

@@McFlyAngler I agree but when you're tying on a budget, sometimes you have to substitute materials. Would uv resgine work as a substitute or thicker thread?

Give it a try. Beads aren’t expensive though. You can get them very great prices. Go to www.risenfly.com and their beads are awesomely priced. I’ll even give you my discount code there for one time use. Type in McFly at checkout and you will get an additional 15% off
