Improving the Surface Finish of Foam Castings Using Back Pressure. How Does It Work? After pouring a liquid expanding foam into a mold, a board that has been pre-drilled with holes is placed over the mold cavity and held securely until the foam rises and cures. This compresses the foam and results in a tighter cell structure against the mold surface.

That is really neat and I bet those are really light too. I may need to try some of that in an upcoming project where light parts would be good. Do they hold up well outside though?

Un-coated or un-painted urethane foam does not hold up well outdoors. We would recommend painting or coating the final casting before placing outdoors.

Thanks for the reply and good to know. Painting them is almost a certainty. I would also do a clear coat to protect the paint. :) I don't expect it to last forever but if it will be good for a few years at least that would be great. :)

Pretty simple concept and a good idea, but how would I make a backer board with my brush-on mold? I have brushed on molds that I made of hands and head from a statue and they have uneven openings and plaster shells.

To what extent, if any, does the back pressure method affect the finished product's weight? That is, will there be any heavier compression or buildup on the surface of the object similar to when the foam is mixed improperly?

The same amount of liquid is used no matter if there is back pressure or not, so the weight would be the same.

Is the So-Strong Black for color or does it make the foam thicker? I want to create a tailor's mannequin that has some flex to it and that can squish at parts but still rebound. Which of the flex foam-iT versions would you recommend for that? I was looking at either VII or 7FR for it, but would those be too soft? Is it possible to mix different kinds of the foam so some parts are softer than others? How do I patch the foam if I still end up with air bubbles, voids, or imperfections?

Hello! Regarding the FlexFoam-iT 17, I read that it creates a "skin" so that the surface is tougher than of other foams. Is that correct and if so, is FlexFoam-iT 17 usable on its or own or to be mixed with another FlexFoam?

FlexFoam-iT! 17 is usable on its own and does have a very strong skin.

We do not calculate a tensile strength for our foams.

This kind of measurement is hard to define for two-part foams, as the quality of mixing, amount of backpressure, and ratio of components all influence the final material quality.

When i try adding a back pressure the area under the drilled out hole ends up denser than the rest of the foam so it feels like there is a hard core. Any tips?

Day and Night difference. I use this method in a 'skull' mold I made with your other Foam-It products and it generates so much heat that it blisters the surface and turns dark brown. I can live with the color difference but not the blistering - - anyway to eliminate that?
