After getting reasonably smaller in diameter, it would've been much easier putting it on a rod lathe and sanding it down! At least that's how EVA foam is shaped...don't know what that would do for this stuff, but that would've been my go to.
The expanded foam will be harder than the old handle. Im sure you can feel it through the srink tube. Would have been better to just fill the gaps with silicone.
Admittedly, I was unsure where this was going and I fully expected it to result in a FAIL, however, you really did a nice job with them and have given me some thoughts on how I can repair my rods. I would never have tried the Great Stuff but it seems to have worked well. i probably would have tried silicone caulk however, it would never shape as well as the Great Stuff unless it was wrapped immediately while still wet. Anyway, thank you for producing this video. I'm excited to check out your other ones.
+Tom Crawford Hi Tom - Thanks. I was thinking about using caulk also until someone on TheHullTruth suggested trying foam. The HullTruth discussion is here :www.thehulltruth.com/sportfishing-charters-forum/646760-grip-repair-heavy-130-pole.html#b So far the repair is holding up fine.
You can get it from www.mudhole.com. They have a video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H-eDBCibkbk.html You can probably find it on Ebay as well. Try Googling "Heat Shrink Grip Material"
Could you imagine he was a body repair man and he did this to your car🤔 just fill the dent with bondo and paint over it. That's like sweeping the dust under the rug. I taught the rod was custom? You suppose to go all in.
I had the identical type of damage happen to 2 of my fishing rods while they were being stored in my basement for the winter. The critter was my cat! He decided that the foam grips were just right for sharpening his claws on.
I would remove both then rim out 2 new ones , split them in the middle , glue them back on by halves , and then apply the shrink tube. However having said that it seems like you did a great job this way. I hate the glueing property of the foam , makes a lot of mess . Good job though .
D Kat no bro once you start you will have to have them replaced. They cannot be reused. Remove the old and replace with new half ones. Then shrink wrap the new ones
I would of cut the old grips off and replaced them with new ones. slit the new ones on one side length wise, then adhear them, and then wrap them to hide the cut.
