the focal only goes by its color scheme really, otherwise its box stock like any other Focal, its like looking at many supercars with different color, it doesnt look unique like the Meze Empyrean, MDRZ1R, etc.

I think the Focal/ Bentley connection might come from the fact that Naim make the audio systems for Bentley cars and Naim and Focal are owned by the same company..

The problem with referencing the Clear Mg (as well as benchmarking the Audeze) is those are both open back while the Radiance is closed. I wouldn’t be cross-shopping open backs if I was seriously considering the Radiance, never mind all the irreconcilable sound quality distinctions that derive from that fundamental difference.

I think it’s a little unfair to compare these to open-backs like the LCD-X and the Clear MG Pro - closed-backs seem to inherently have certain sonic qualities that hold it back.

@@soulfulfool I also take issue with the idea closed backs are inherently holding stuff back, I’ve still never heard a TOTL open back that can thump as well as a good closed back. You might lose a little detail or sound stage but you gain the fun factor in return, it’s all about what you prioritize. Personally I love my ZR1 because it rocks hard but still has a beautiful treble sparkle and wide sound.

Another recommendation, I just picked up a Focal Radiance and honestly it is probably 90% of a Utopia in detail but has deeper bass, thumps harder and doesn’t rattle or crackle in sub bass at high volume like the Utopia. I’m probably going to sell my Utopia after acquiring one just because it’s a funner headphone.

Fantastic review. I’ve watched many reviews on these headphones now and the only thing that was different about yours is that most others said that these have a fantastic bass response that hits deeper and lower than almost all other focal headphones, and we’re even labeled by some as being the ones to get for bass-heads. So I was a bit confused when hearing your feedback that seemed to conflict quite a bit with what I heard from almost every other reviewer in regards to the sound of the bass here. I primarily listen to electronic and modern day pop music, so punchy, deep, and solid bass response is something I look for, though I also do a lot of video editing and might use one of my other headphones for that purpose. Also curious how these compare overall and with the bass response to the Meze 109 Pro which I have and love.

I have had the popping issue out of the Focal Clear MG Pro's, Focal Clear and Elex. I will say thought that the Clear MG Pro's had some of the deepest clean bass I have ever experienced with an headphone. It was almost like I forgot to turn the subwoofer off in the room. On the other hand, I have had zero issues with the Celestee - although closed back being the difference. So for me I steer clear of any of their open back sets. Great video and review! I was curious if this was an rebadged Celestee but you mentioned it being an "hybrid" variance.

Only thing I got out of this video was that Josh will be reviewing the updated 2021 audeze lcd x. Might as well include other audezes like the lcd xc etc as it seems they are updating the pads and tuning. Should be interesting. Wonder if they can retune the lcd 2 that has been sorta strange

I have had these for 2 months now and here are a couple of points to add that were not mentioned. 1st these are not a hybrid open back, they are closed and their sound isolation is amazing. Almost as good as my Bose NC700 ANC. 2nd mine took a very long time to breakin and smooth out, 240hrs. Comfort wise, they are incredibly comfortable. Last, the metal finish is called copper by Focal, and to me it looks like copper rather than rose gold. I chose them over other because they are closed back. The Clear and Audeze are both open back and would not be good for my use. LCDXC, Celestee and Stellia comparison would be more interesting. Thanks for the great review.

@@keithb5612 I think they are good for most any musical style. I use them for classical guitar Jesse Cook and Ottmar Liebert and also for Rock and Heavy Metal and they impress with styles. From AC/DC to Sarah McLaclain or Norah Jones they are really great. I havent tried the new Celestee or Elegia to compare, but when I did my own research it seems these are much improved vs the Elegia and have more deep bass than Celestee. They seem to be the most comfortable and isolating of the Focals as well. The Elegia had issue with getting a good seal, these dont have that issue at all.

@@keithb5612 what is your impression of the Radiance? The Elegia were ok to me but nothing more. I had more pleasure with the Sundara. The Celestee were better than the Elegia but twice the price and not twice better and also I think lacking some bass.

Just got the new Grado SR80X. It's unreal. Im almost certain the rumors that the new X line uses the Hemp drivers are true. Low end, they shaved off the 2K ear bleed, but kept all the greatness that made Grado. Aside from the new headband and cord, both of which are significant upgrades. I put on my SHP9500 after some time with the SR80X and it sounded awful. I finally heard that grain DMS is notorious for claiming the SHPs have.

Thanks for this awesome review. It’s interesting you mention that about the vocals, it’s something i noticed on my Clear’s too, and the Celestee. I just didn’t enjoy how they handled female vocals, the impact or power wasn’t there, no wow…. The Stellia suprisingly has some of the best vocals I’ve ever heard though, would love to see you review the Stellia man!

@@keithb5612 Hey, Keith. I happened to have the chance to audition both the Radiance and Clear with a group of audiophile friends. We basically reached a consensus that Radiance is more suited for pop/rock music, basically anything with beats and bass, compared to the Clear. And we all preferred the Radiance over Clear for the said genres. However, the Clear does excel in more musical pieces such as violin quartet/solo. It really depends on what you listen to most.

However, Abyss Diana V2 stole the show that time, so I don't even remember how Stellia sounded as the Diana was too impressive LOLLL Sorry, can't give you opinions on the Elegia.

I used to own Radiance and I'm now an Utopia owner. One thing I want to point out is Utopia is not more brighter, assuming you are talking about the tonality. Powered by most SS amps, Utopia is sharper in treble and not bass elevated, so I get why you say it's bright. However, people can easily get rid of the sharpness by using tubes, if they don't like it.

I love these myself, they replaced my Audioquest Nightowl which were my happy place...Sound is subjective and though Joshua makes great videos he's not the final say on my choice of cans. I do recommend the Dekoni Lambskin pads which add 30%ish firmness and creates a little more space for the inside of the headphones to the ear. Sonically it makes everything clearer and does not take away from the bass.

Hey @@Leo.SKDXL05, I'm glad that you share your experience with your Radiance. Did you experience any kind of channel imbalance, due to the ear pads that are not adequately similar to each others or one driver is worse than the other? I'm exchanging my Clear MG (the brown one) for this Radiance, because of the issues that I mention here. The right ear pad is squishier than the left one and the left driver develops subtle, but noticeable, metallic crackling noise, when I listen to tracks with powerful piano notes or bright female vocal.

@@dontwatchmydoomvideos I think the Dan Clark Audio Aeon 2s have outstanding bass, as do the ModHouse Argons T50RP Mk3s. I auditioned the LCD-X a while back but wasn’t blown away personally. I hope that helps

I got some Focal Elegias a few weeks back for a great price so I can finally speak to the fitment. I've got a big dome so they fit really snug, but the extra tension added by the spring makes it a bit tight, plus it's closed back so the pressure gets to me after a while. While that's true though, in terms of gaming (yes I game with my Elegias) I can ignore the pressure for 2-3 hour stints.

The 3k range you refer to in the vid, can this be fixed with EQ and be done with or is it still lacking in your opinion? I EQed up the 3k quite a bit on my Radiance and female vocals are very well pronounced in my opinion.

Josh, I love your channel man. As an opera singer and also orchestral double bass player 2nd, what headphones would you suggest on a budget of $700? Bearing in mind I’d like to use them when I travel…so something I could use in conjunction with a portable DAC and my iPhone and or iPad as I love watching concerts as much as I love listen to them while on the go. I’ve completed many hours of research but still cannot decide. I would really appreciate your advice dude. Thanks. I owned and liked a pair of the Elegia, but I never found them to be comfortable. The ear cups are a touch small so they pinched my ear lobs a bit too much. I didn't like the way they sat on my head either.

Hi Josh, great review as usual. I have similar to you an affinity for vocals such as Tracey Chapman, Adele, Katie Melua etc.. What would you recommend here for open and closed back headphones in the higher price range? Also a little bit of an odd question. I have tinnitus and I am sensitive to the 4K range. I do not live near a place where I can test so I am looking for the opinion of others. I'm debating on the Focal Radiance or the Aeon Noire 2 Closed, What do you all think is a better choice?

Josh I have a big doubt maybe you could help clarify. Current phones dropped the headphone Jack... I prefer to listen music wired. Do you know if the audio quality remains the same or does it get worse by listening through the Usb-C to headphone adapter cable? TY!

Actually rolls Royce made their headphone based on Bowers Wilkins P9, it really only changed the logo, but I honestly wish I can get one of that lol, after all it’s rolls Royce

I’ve got a question. I’m considering buying a pair of Focals and, for the moment, it’s between the Celestee, Radiance and the Clear Mg. I plan on streaming Tidal on a mac via a FiiO KA3, simple as that and mostly listen to rock (mostly classic, but some modern as well) with the ocassional classical orchestras. And I do play bass guitar in a band and don’t mind a punchy bass response as this is what I hear on my monitors. And so … which is the one to have? Thanks!

The bass pops on high volume and causes high distortion on heavy bass tracks. Unfortunately, I had to return. LCD X is King.

Interesting, about 100 hours in and I haven’t had that issue at all.

@@JeffJacquesmd - probably due to the volume you listen at. I listen at uncomfortable loud volumes and so it’s to be expected. However, I do not have that issue with my LCD X as they handle bass with ease and control. It’s also been reported by many of their Focal headphones to have this issue. If I were to listen to low or medium volume then there’s no distortion or pop.

i know this is an unrelated question but i really need your help which are easier to drive? i've heard that 58x easier to drive but i saw 560s has low impedance i only have scarlett 2i2, and the syba sonic dac amp for my ps4. so which one should i go for? last question: does the 6xx can be drive by either of those?

Almost bought a pair as I was looking for a good pair of closed-back headphones. I love their design and quite like their tonality. But then I compared them to the ZMF Atticus which completely blew me away.

@@cassiecat7038 Yes it is. I too am looking for a closed-back companion to my Focal Clear OG. Currently waiting to audition the Olive Verite C, but if it's not that different from the Moneypod VC, then I'll definitely be getting an Atticus.
